COTTON-SEED CRUSHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,775, dated April 20, 1880.

Application filed February 4, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILSON L. OWEN, of Talbotton, in the county of Talbot and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Seed Orushers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for crushing cotton-seed, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a crosssection, of the machine.

A represents the frame-work of the machine, constructed in any suitable manner to receive the working parts.

B and 0 represent the crushi n g-rollers, which have their journal-bearings respectively in boxes I) b and a a. The boxes aafor the roller 0 are stationary on or in the frame A, while the boxes b b for the roller 13 are adjustable by having slots 00 ain their ends through which the fastening screws or bolts (1 pass. By these means the roller B can be adjusted to and from the roller 0, as required, for crushin g the cottonseed more or less.

The two rollers B O are geared together by means of gear-wheels E E upon one end, said gear-wheels having elongated cogs, substan tially as shown, to admit of the rollers being adjusted, as above described.

One of the crushing-rollers is to be provided with a crank or pulley or other device for transmitting motion from any desired power to the machine.

The machine may be run by hand, or it may be connected with the running mechanism of a cotton-gin, or be connected to ahorse-power or other convenient motive power.

Above the crushing-rollers is a hopper, D, into which the cotton-seed is admitted by hand or otherwise, or it may be conveyed directly from the cotton-gin into said hopper. The lower end of the hopper forms a-narrow opening above and between the two crushing-rolh ers, and above said opening in the hopper is an elongated feed-roller, F, which has its journal-bearings in the ends of the hopper, or in boxes connected thereto.

The feed-roller F is corrugated or fluted longitudinally, as shown at 00 00, whereby the seed is taken regularly and evenly and distributed at the bottom, so as to drop down between the rotating rollers B O and be crushed by them.

This machine is intended specially for crushing cotton-seed to be used for fertilizing purposes, and is simple and cheap in construction, and durable, and not liable to get out'of order.

The feed-roller F is rotated by means of a belt, H, from one of the crushing-rollers, or from a pulley thereon passing over a pulley, G, on one of the journals of the feed-roller outside of the hopper.

The crushed seed that might adhere to the crushing-rollers B O is removed by means of scrapers I I, arranged to operate against the outer sides of said rollers.

The scraper arranged for the movable roller B should also be made movable, so as to be adjusted according as said roller is adjusted to or from the roller 0.

I am aware that crushing-rolls revolving in close proximity with each other, one of said rolls being journaled in stationary and the other in adjustable boxes, have heretofore been employed; and I therefore lay no claim, broadly, to such invention or construction; and I desire it to be understood that I confine my invention to the precise combination of the parts claimed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp In a cotton-seed crusher, the combination, with the hopper D, corrugated feed-roll F, and belt H, of the roll 0, journaled in the stationary boxes a a, gears E E, adjustable roll B, boxes I) I), having slots 00 w, and fastening screw-bolts d, provided with nuts, the whole constructed and arranged to operate in the manner and for the purpose described.
