and this application Decem ber1 1, 1939, Serial N0. 308,509
'9 Claims. (Cl. 308-184) My invention relates to railway vehicles and it has particular relation to the construction. of
railway vehicle truck's. I
One object of my invention consists in providing anovel type of railway truck construction which provides improved riding qualities in the car body supported thereby.
Another object of my invention consists in providing a novel type of bearing support for use in a railway truck construction which cushions any forces transmitted between the wheels and the Journal bearing supports.
This application is a division my copendlng application, Serial No. 232,756 filed October'l, 1938.
For a better understanding of my invention reference may .now be had to'the accompanying drawing, inwhich;
Fig. 1 is aside 'elevational view of a portion of a railway truck embodying certain of the features of my invention.
Fig. '2 is a cross-sectional view of the railway bearing illustrated in Fig. 1, the section being taken along line II---IIthereof.
1'18. 3 is a ertical cross-sectional view of the wheel axle bearing illustrated in Fig. 2, the section being taken along line IIIIII thereof.
In the structure illustrated the weight of the car body (not shown) is borne by leaf springs l which rest on a longitudinally extending lower member 2 of a side frame I, an upper member 4;
of which extends above the springs i. ,The end portion or the-lower member 2 is inclined upwardly and Joins the upper member 4 to constitute the integral side frame structure 3.
The side frames in turn rest, at each end. on
Journal bearin s I to be herein later described in detail. The journal bearings I receive .iournals 6, constituting the ends of the axles on which are mounted the usual railway wheels 'I.
l The side frame I may be composed of pressed metal members welded together as shown, the
adapted to be secured thereto, the members 22 constituting the lower half of a circular enclosure and the members I! constituting the upper half thereof.
Within the annulus formed by the members It and 22 is disposed a plurality of end plates" and center plates 24 having annular rubber members II vulcanized or otherwise suitably bonded thereto. Each of the end plates has an outer diameter which is greater than the outer diameter of thecentral plate 24, and the center plate 24 has an inner diameter which is smaller than the inner diameter of'the plates ll. The rubber members 2| are vulcanized so as to hold the two end plates 23 and the center plates 24 in a single integral unit of which the metal rings are kept out of contact with each other;
. members It and 2'! so as to support the bearing members it and ii constituting opposite sides of the side frame land being welded to a central longitudinally extending web member It. The members it and I! are each provided with a semi-circular opening ll, within which the Journal bearing I is secured.
liach of the members It and I I is reinforced by a semi-circular pressed metal member I. of
L-shape cross-section which is welded thereto. The portions II, I! and II are welded to a semicircular plate It, and are provided with integral lugs 20, adapted to receive bolts ll, by means of which a semi-circular retaining member I! is housing on the members It and'fl but out or metallic contact therewith.
Within the housing 28 are disposed annular. roller races 20 which are adapted to be engaged by a plurality-of tapered rollers 30 which likewise .engage inner bearing races it which are secured to and rotate with the wheel axle I. The 4 housing 28 is closed, at its outer end, by means of a housing end plate 32 bolted thereto, and is adapted to contain oil or other liquid lubricant so that the rollers on the lower side of the bearing are constantly ersed in oil. The inner bearing race Si is p vided {with an oil throwing sleeve 33 which picks up 011- at the lowermost point of its travel and throws it outwardly into an opening 34 disposed in theupper part of the stationary housing 2|. Anoll'duct ll carries the oil by gravity from the opening It to the upper part of the hearing so as to constantly bathe those rollers which are. at the moment, in the uppermost position, with oil.
The bearing housing 28. is provided, at one end,
with an annular flange II, as shown in Fig. 2, and at the other end with an annular bolted on and a central member ll, composed of rubber, which is bonded or otherwise secured to the plates 40. The rubber members 4| prevent any metalic contact between the semi-annular members I8, l9 and 22 on the one hand and the flanges 36 and 31 of the bearing housing on the other hand and at the same time permit a certain degree of flexibility therebetween longitudinally of the wheel axle 6.
Intermediate the flange 36 and the annular flexible member 39 is disposed a ring 50, made in two semi-circular parts and bolted together to form an annulus. Ihls ring, when pulled into place by its bolts, serves to force the flexible member 39 into close fittingengagement with the rings 38 and the flange 31 and cause the flexible members to carry a portion of the vertical load in shear. When the ring 50 is removed, by loosening its bolts, the various parts are no longer held rigidly in place and may be disassembled or adjusted.
The rubber members prevent metallic contact between the axle housing 28 and the semicircular supporting structures I9 and 22 and at the same time permit a certain amount of resilient movement therebetween in a vertical direction and in a direction longitudinally of the truck frame. These rubber members 25 and ti therefore act as noise and shock eliminators between the wheels and the side frames and, to the degree that they permit flexibility, serve as load equalizers between the various bearing members. In addition, they provide a cushion between the side members and the wheel axles, thus adding the side frame members to the sprung load leaving only the wheels, axles, wheel bearings and bearing housings to constitute the unsprung load.
In order to eliminate the possibility of incorrectly assembling the bearing housing within the semi-circular members l9 and 22 I have provided the flange with two small spaced lugs 43 at its uppermost point and have welded or otherwise suitably secured a metallic finger M to the upper side of the L-shaped member I8, as best shown in Fig. 2, which is adapted to fit between the fingers 43, it being essential that the opening 34 in the housing 28 be at all times assembled in the uppermost position possible so as to provide the proper feeding of oil to the upper bearings.
From this description it will be apparent that there is no metal to metal contact between the wheel axles and the load carrying side frames and that any noises or vibrations transmitted therethrough to the side frames must first pass through layers of rubber adapted for the purpose of eliminating such vibration and deadening such noises.
Although I have illustrated but a single form of my invention, and have described in detail but a single application thereof it will be apparent to' those skilled in the art that it is not so limited but that various minor modifications and changes may be effected therein without departing from the spirit of my invention, or from the scope of the appended claims.
