This invention relates to stools. or the like and has particular reference to what are known as kitchen stools. 1

Among other objects, the invention aims to provide a simple and inexpensive structure for this purpose which can be produced in large quantities from sheet metal at low cost and. which will be at the same time sturdy and comfortable.

The invention will be understood by reference to the following description of an illustrative structure taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevational View of a stool embodying the present invention;

Figure 2 is an enlarged axial sectional view of the upper or seat end of the stool of Fig. 1; and

Figure 3 is a fragmentary segmental inverted plan or bottom view of the parts shown in Fig. 2.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the stool here shown includes the seat part 10, legs 11 and foot-rest 12, the entire device, with the exception of the seat upholstery 13 and rubber feet 14, being desirably made of sheet metal. It will be understood that there may be the usual four legs 11, two of which appear in the elevational view of Fig. 1, the foot-rest 12 being a band encircling all four of the legs and secured thereto as by rivets 15.

The legs 11 are also conveniently riveted, as best shown in Fig. 2, as at 16 to the inner face of a cylindrical peripheral skirt portion 1'1 of the seat frame 18. This skirt portion may be advantageously somewhat fluted as at 19 in concentric rings for ornamentation. The legs and foot-rest 12 are desirably of channel or U-formation, as shown at 2i], for strength and rigidity, the legs flattening at their top portions as at 21 to accommodate the rivets 16, and to enhance the area of contact with the inner face of the skirt portion of the seat frame. Also there are here shown a pair of rivets 1B for each of the legs, vertically spaced apart for additional strength and rigidity.

In accordance with the present invention the seat frame 18 has in this instance a circular central opening 22 and margining this central opening, throughout, the frame has a downwardly extending flange 23.

As an insert for the central opening 22 there is provided the seat pad plate 24, which in this instance is circular to be snugly received in the central opening 22 and having a downwardly extending flange 25 throughout its periphery which, as here shown, is extended laterally and horizontally in an ultimate flange portion 26.

18 and 24 are thus adapted to clamp between them the margin 21 of an upholstery covering 28 of leather-like or other suitable material. A resilient filler 29 of cotton-wadding or the like may be interposed between the upholstery covering 28 and the pad plate 24, the parts 28 and 29 together constituting an upholstery pad. When the pad plate 24 with the upholstery pad members 28 and 29 thereon is pushed into the central opening 22, in this instance from the bottom, the adjoining flanges 23 and 25 of the

18 and 24 respectively grip the margin of the upholstery covering 28 and pull this snugly over the filler 29 throughout the circular periphery of the parts.

To secure the parts in this relationship, the flanged part in this instance 26 of the pad plate 24 is shown provided with slots 30 and the downwardly extending flange 23 of the seat frame is extended at intervals in its circumference to form tongues 31 which, when the pad plate and its upholstery pad members are inserted as de-' scribed, pass through the slots 30 and are then bent upwardly upon themselves as at 32 to support the pad plate. The number of such interlocking tongues and slots may be varied as desired throughout the circular peripheries of the parts as may be necessary or desirable for strength and rigidity.

So constructed and arranged, the adjoining flanges on the seat frame and seat pad plate secure the upholstery thereto simply but emciently, and the interlocking means illustrated between the flanges securely supports the seat pad plate, providing a sl ghtly and comfortable seat, and the margins of the upholstery covering may be left untrimmed, being concealed as shown.

Having described the invention, what claimed is 1. In a sheet metal stool or the like, the combination with a sheet metal seat frame having a central opening, of a sheet metal pad plate, having its perimeter downwardly flanged and said flange being extended laterally and in a substantially horizontal direction to form an angle member about said perimeter, a downward flange on the seat frame margining the said central opening, said pad plate being adapted to be snugly received in said central opening from the under side of the opening and moved upwardly therein into place limited by abutment of said downward flange on the seat frame with said horizontally extending flange portion of the pad plate, a resilient pad on said pad plate, an upholstery covering extending over said pad and pad plate and having its margins clamped between said flanges and tensioned by relative movement of said parts into place whereby the margins of the upholstery covering may be left untrimmed and are received concealed between the laterally extended flange portion and the downward flange on the seat frame, and interlocking means between said flanges.

2. In a sheet metal stool or the like, the combination with a sheet metal seat frame having a central opening, of a sheet metal pad plate having its perimeter downwardly flanged andsaid flange being extended laterally and in a substantially horizontal direction to form an angle member about said perimeter, av downward flange on the seat frame margining the said central opening, said pad plate being adapted to be insides of perimeter, said pad plate being adapted to be inserted into said central opening from the under side of the opening and moved upwardly therein into place limited by abutment of the seat frame with said horizontally extending flange portion of the pad plate, and interlocking means between said frame and plate, said interlocking means including integral dependin ton ues n e seat received in slots in the pla e lateral y flan ed portion and thereafter bent about the plate downwardly f n ed EQ YUQR- W LLI M ANZER.
