UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM B. DOUGLAS, OF MONROE, WISCONSIN.
HOLDBACK FOR VEHICLES.
SIPEGIIZIFII'J'JHATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,652, dated April 20, 1880. Application filed January 3, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADAM B. DOUGLAS, of Monroe, in the county of Green and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks for Buggy- Thills andI do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
- This invention relates to an improved holdback attachment to buggy-thills, the construction and operation of which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a plate or casting provided with countersunk openings B B, to receive screws 0 O, by which it may be secured in a suitable recess in the 'thill. The plate A is provided at one end with a strong S or swan-bill shaped hook, D, and at the other end with a strong flat spring, E, terminating just under the curve or nip at the end of said hook, under which the end of the spring is turned down, as shown, toward the plate A, so that the adjoining ends of the spring and hook shall form together a representation, in outline, of the letter X.
By this construction the holdback-strap may be easily slipped into the hook, and, when desired, as readily removed, thereby saving much time in hitching or unhitching.
1 am aware that snap-hooks consisting of a hook combined with a spring are old, and such I do not claim.
I am aware of the patent to Miller, November 27, 1866, No. 60,033, and I claim nothing therein shown; but,
Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The plate or casting A, provided at one end with an S or swan-bill shaped hook D, and at the other with a spring, E, facing said hook, terminating under the curve or nip at the end thereof, and forming together therewith the outline of a letter X, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADAM B. DOUGLAS.
