This invention relates to dies for use in die casting machines wherein heated thermoplastic material is injected from dual cylinders or nozzles into the impression of the dies in forming resulting die castings, each composed of two diiierent casting materials, or materials of different colors. More particularly the invention relates to a die structure wherein two impressions are formed on adjacent surfaces of relatively movable dies with gates arranged on the parting line of the dies opening into said impressions, and further wherein one impression is smaller than the other and said other impression shaped to receive the casting formed in the iirst impression so that the cast body formed in the second or larger impression will be arranged upon and united with the rst mentioned casting arranged therein in producing two colored die castings. The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the .invention are disclosed and in which the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic plan view showing dies in a closed position andindicating the arrangement of injection nozzles thereon.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 indicating the formation of castings in the impressions of the dies.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line- 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing the dies in'open position with the castings ejected and moved by a core pin employed.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showingthe dies in closed position and indicating the castings formed therebetween.
Fig. 5 is a face viewof one die part showing the impressions and gate passages therein.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modied form of die for producing other types of castings, and
Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the, resulting casting formed from the die shown in Fig. 6.
This application is a continuation in part of our prior application No. .144.627, iiled May 25, 1937, now Patent No. 2,234,185 and of our prior application No. 258,928, led February 28, 1939, and embodying' a division of the subject matter originally covered in said applications. The construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive in the present application relates to the die structure of the earlier application identified above, whereas the structure shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is based 55 on the die structure illustrated in the second mentioned application.
In Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, III,` lilarepresents relatively movable dies which are arranged in and operated by suitable means in a die casting machine -so as to move toward and from each other and to be firmly held in engagement with each other in the casting operation to separate in ejecting the casting on a core pin II and then partially closed in stripping vthe castings from the core pin. Each die part has on adjacent surfaces thereof two impressions I2, I3 which are spaced apart, the impression I2 being smaller than the impression I3 andthe impression I3 being so shapedas to receive the casting I4 formed in the impression I2 in successive casting operations of the machine. The enlarged portion of the impression I3 forms a cast body I5 directly upon the casting Il ,when arranged in the impression, and it is preferred that a dove-tailed tongue or other keying means Ila be provided on the cast body I4 so that the cast body I5 will interlock therewith as will be apparent.
In the construction shown, the resulting twopart casting, which is represented at I5 in Fig. 2 of the drawing, isin the form of a pull such as usedA on the sliders of separable fasteners, but of course it will be understood that any type or kind of casting can be produced in accordance I with the invention, the cavities or impressions jI 2, I3 being shaped to produce the desired iinished product.
On the-parting line of the dies I0, Ilia is a single admission orice I1 which opens into branches I8 andIS extending to each impression,
so that when heated thermoplastic material is injected under pressure from a nozzle 2li into the gate passages Il, I8 and I9, the two cast bodies I4 and I5 will simultaneously be formed. For
illustrative purposes we will assume that this material is red in color, .then the two cast bodies I4 and I5 will be red. Another nozzle'or cylinder 2| containing a blue 'thermoplastic material is next moved into registering position with the orifice or passage I'I so that the next successive casting will have the bodies I4, I5 cast in blue, as is clearly illustrated and understandable from the showing in Fig. 2 ofthe drawing.
The impression I2, or each half of the impression is provided with inwardly projecting tongues forming core pieces 22 which form an aperture 23 in the resulting casting, that is to say, in the part I4 thereof. The impression I3 has similar core portions 2l to 'register with the formed aperture 2l when the part I4 is moved into the impression,
and if desired, other similar cores 25 may be vprovided in the impression I3 to form on the resulting casting an aperture 26 in the part I5. It will appear from a consideration of Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawing that the lower portions of each die part I0, Illa is provided with a diagonal gate I8a similar to the branch I 8 so as to receive the ,gate which remains on the partfl2 when moved into the impression I 3.' .This gate, including the gate formed as at I9, are trimmed from the resulting casting. Adjacent surfaces of the die parts I0, I'IIa are also provided with an aperture 2l leading into the impression I2 for receiving the pin II which acts as an ejector pin in removing the castings from the die parts when the die parts are separated and also to feed the cast body I4 into position to enter the impression I3.'
Each of the die parts are provided with water circulating passages .28 as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing for the circulation of Water or another cooling agent through the dies adjathe companion die part will be of the same construction in accordance with the, teachings in Figs. l to 5 inclusive; therefore, the showing of the two die parts is not deemed to be essential. Arranged on the surface of each of the die parts in question is an impression into which extends a cylindrical bore or passage 3I for the reception of a headed pin or other support that is partially indicated at 32 in Fig. 7 of the drawing, upon which one cast body 33 of the contour of the impression 30 is to be formed. Also opening Vinto one side of the impression 30 is a gate or admission passage 34 which opens through one side of the die in an admission port 35 with which one injection nozzle 36 is adapted to register so that a heated thermoplastic material may be pressure discharged from the cylinder 31 into the port 35 and gate 34 and thus into the impression 30. The impression 30 is alsoy preferably provided with a dove-tailed recess 30a centrally of one surface thereof to form on the re-Y sulting casting an anchor portion 33a for keying and positively retaining another cast body 38 on the body 33. The body 3B is formed in an' impression 39 when one of the cast bodies 33 is arranged in said impression 39. A pin receiving passage 3Ia similar to 3l also extends into the impression 39, and a supplemental gate passage 34a extends into the impression 3Ia so as to receive the gate 40 which is integral with the body 33 when the latter is moved into the impression 39.
' .A gate or admission passage 4I is provided on the surfacesl of the dies and opens into the impression 39 substantially in alinement with the passage 3| but at the opposite side of the die so as to extend to that part of the impression 39 which will form the cast body 38. Another nozzle 36a Ais adapted to register with the gate passage 4I so that heated casting material from a cylinder 31a may be pressure discharged into the irnpression 39 to form the cast body 39 simultaneously in forming the body 33 in the impression 30. In some instances, the pin. 32 upon which the cast bodies are formed may be used as.
the ejector pin to remove the castings from the dies when the latter are separated, and also to feed the castings. However, when forming castings on pins or other members of relatively light construction, it will be desirable to use an ejector or feed pin substantially similar to the pin Il. For this purpose, the adjacent surfaces of the dies are provided with a vertical passage 42 which .extends into the gate passage 34 and another v passage 43 which extends between the gate passage 34 and into the passage 4I so that both cast bodies will be supported on the pin employed, which is not shown, in ejecting the castings and also in feeding the castings the same as taught in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. The lower surface of the dies is preferably recessed as seen at 44 to receive part of the cast bodies 33, 38 and to aid in supporting the same in the operation of trimming off the gate 40 and the gate 40a which extends to the body 38, both of which gates are indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7, simply to show their relationship to the cast body prior to being trimmed oi.
With the construction shown in Figs. 6 and 7 v of the drawing it will be understood that one cyl- ISU inder 31 will contain heated thermoplastic material of one color and the other cylinder 31a, similar material of another color, so that the resulting unitary cast member comprising the bodies 33, 38 will have the two distinct colors arranged thereon.
It will.of course be understood that any desired contours may be provided in the impressions 30, 39 so long as the contours are such as to permit separation of the die parts employed for the ejection of the castings therefrom. It will also be apparent that when the ejector pin receiving apertures 42, 43 are employed, it is not essential that the apertures 3I, 3Ia be employed, as the cast bodies may be formed the same as in the structure shown in Figs. l to 5 inclusive.
