Claims.
This invention relates to toy air guns producing the sound of a gun shot by bursting paper with compressed air, and more in particular to a guide `and 4support for a roll of paper in combination with the gun disclosed in my prior application Serial No. 72,707, filed April 4, 1936, now Patent No. 2,083,535 and as an improvement on such combination structure is a continuation in part of said application.
Although the paper holding structure illustrated and described in my earlier filed application proved satisfactory in a measure, it was found that in some instances the paper roll would get out of its normal position and interfere with the 'desired feeding operation of the paper in the gun. Furthermore, the former retaining device afforded little protection to the roll of paper in keeping it from snarling, and particularly in preventing it from being torn with rough handling.
It is an object of the present invention to provide, in a pleasingly appearing and efficiently operating combination, a paper breaker toy gun and an improved holder for supporting rolled paper to feed through the gun.
One of the features of the present invention is the provision of a simplified firing material support in combination with Ian air gun acting upon such firing material.
Another object is to provide a paper holder for such va gun, which holder will retain 4a paper roll Aagainst unrolling to an undesirable amount or becoming loosened and falling to one side or the other out of the normal rolled position at right angles to the rotating axis of the roll, during all kinds of handling of the gun.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simplified paper holder wherein a portion thereof cooperates in the assembly of the compression chamber of the toy gun and in forming an out- A still further object is to provide a holder for rolled paper, for a feeding movement in a continuous strip, said holder including a housing Fig. 2, and with the gun pointing in the opposite direction of that illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of the complete paper holder of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan view of a modified embodiment of the paper holder in combination with the gun of Fig. 1.
Fig. y6 is a sectional view along the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
In practicing the invention, a paper bursting toy gun is provided, having a compression chamber in the barrel thereof, and means for sealing a paper strip across an outlet from the compression chamber to burst the paper with compressed air. The paper is fed in a continuous strip from a roll carried in a two-piece housing -above the gun barrel, with a portion of the housing extending downwardly and cooperating to form the outlet at the `end of the compression chamber `of the gun. The housing is provided in a substantially cylindrical casing to correspond With the form of the paper roll, and has a paper insertion Yopening in the face of the casing, and paper lretaining means rotatably supported thereon.
To facilitate reference to my prior application on that structure which is common to that application and to the present application, the same reference characters primed are applied to such common structure.
Fig. 1 illustrates the toy gun of my prior application referred to above, having 'a handle Il and trigger member 63 to be grasped vby the user with the trigger operating through the spring and release mechanism described in said lapplication, and including a piston 26 (Fig. 6) and compression spring 34 carried thereon. A two-piece g-un barrel I2 carries a cylinder l5'` in the front end thereof to in turn enclose the piston fand spring mechanism having a leather Washer 32 on the end of the piston to engage the inside wall of this cylinder and compress the air therein as the piston is moved forwardly under spring pressure after release thereof at the end of the cooking action by the trigger member 63.
As has been explained in the above noted prior application, and as will be apparent from Fig. 6 which illustrates the gun structure for both embodiments of the present invention, a strip of paper 41 is sealed across the outlet from the cylinder I6' to be burst by the discharge of air from said cylinder. The strip of paper 4l' is fed from a roll of paper 5I by paper sealing and feeding mechanism including a metal slide 45 with a front end or sealing portion 48 and ra movably carried feeding jaw 15% on the `bottom of the slide having teeth 51 engaging the paper 41' and extending to a feeding plate 39 integral With the mounting or plate portion 31' for the roll carrying housing 16, as will be hereinafter described. The plate Sil extends upwardly over the mounting portion 31 having an aperture therein and an upset iiange 30 which is pressed over the flanged end 36' of the cylinder l5 to f rigidly mount the housing 15 on the cylinder and barrel assembly of the gun. A cupped yring 42 is inverted at the end of the cylinder to cooperate With the flanges 3G and 36 to form a buffer against Which the fixed Washer on the piston may press and cooperate with the flange 30', especially, to retain a rubber grommet 4| in place, to provide a cushion against which the sealing portion 48 presses the paper 41 to provide an air tight seal and make possible the bursting of the paper With a loud noise.
The air gun is a repeating device, and will ire or burst the paper as rapidly as the operator may compress the trigger member 63 with his ngers to cock the gun and permit the release of the piston.
The preferred embodiment of the combination is illustrated in Figs. l to 4 inclusive, and shows the housing 1S supported above the gun for carrying the roll of paper 5l. The housing includes a semi-cylindrical casing 11 (Figs. 3 and 4), and integral side Walls 18 and 19 bent to right angles with the casing 11 and connected thereto at short connecting portions, as indicated at 30 in Fig. 3. The casing 11 with its integral side Walls 18 and 19 extends through the downwardly extending mounting plate portion 31 so that all of these portions are stamped out from a single piece of metal. Y
Aspreviously described, the mounting portion 31 is provided with a anged aperture for securing the mounting portion, and in fact the entire housing 16 itself, to the cylinder i5 in the gun proper. The casing 11 extends from the bend Bla to a curved integral lip 82 which is formed so as to engage the transverse or handle portion 33r of the roll retaining member 84 in a substantially spring catch action. Y
A retaining member 84 is formedwfrom wire substantially of the size indicated in Fig. 1, and includes a transverse axis portion 85 and a radial arm portion 8E extending to the handle portion in the side Walls 18 and 19 respectively of the r housing. In the original mounting of this member, the normal sized outer end of the portion S5 is inserted through aperture 88 and then flattened out in any desired manner to the configuration at 89 shown particularly in Fig. 2. This flattened end 89 may be inserted through the elongated slot 81, yet will not pass through the corresponding aperture E3 in the opposite side wall of the housing. To insert the paper roll 5I in the housing, the handle portion 83 is snapped out of the lip 82 and brought forwardly until the flattened end 39 may be Withdrawn through the slot 81, after which the paper roll 5l is inserted in the walled housing, and
the retaining member 84 reinserted through the slot 81 and moved to theposition shown in Figs. 1 to 4. Inthe commercial embodiment'of this structure it has been foundV that the paper roll the Walls 18 and 19 from falling to one side or the other.
A further embodiment of the combination structure is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, and includes a housing 90 having a casing 11a which extends downwardly through the mounting portion 31 as described with respect to the embodiment of Figs. l to 4, and extends upwardly in cylindrical form to an upper edge slightly higher than the top of the casing 11 of Fig. 3 for instance. A slidable cover 9| is rotatably secured at apertures 92 in the side Walls 93 similar to the side Walls 18 and 19 and integral With the casing through a connecting portion at 80, identical with this portion illustrated in Fig. 3. The cover is shown in full lines in closed position (Fig. 6) to retain the roll of paper 5I therein, While the dotted lines in Fig. 6 indicate the cover in open position. A projection 94 in the casing 11a serves to releasably lock the cover in closed position, While the opening of the cover is facilitated by a bevelled portion S5 Which helps to guide depression 9S over the projection 94 to readily open the cover. A guideway 91 centrally of the cover and guideways 98 adjacent the edges fit over the projection 94 and beads 99 respectively as the cover is moved to an open position.
When the cover is in closed position, a slot formed by the lower edge |00 of the cover and the bend Sla in the casing 11a forms a guiding opening to guide the paper from roll 5| into the feeding mechanism of the gun.
In utilizing only a two-piece assembly for the complete housing for the paper roll, and ythen employing the mounting portion of that housing to cooperate With the barrel and cylinder structure of the gun to complete the assembly and provide an outlet for the cylinder, a minimum vamount of material is necessary in the structure,
is amply protected against damagegfeeds satisiactorily out of the housing, and is retained by and yet ruggedness, simplicity and a certain amount of artistic meritV are providedl in the Y paper holder.
Although the invention has been described in its preferred embodiments, it is understood that it is not limited thereby,but is limited only b y the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:

A housing for a roll of strip material including a substantially semi-cylindricaly casing and integral side Walls, and a movable lretaining member for said roll `supported in said walls having an axial portion extendingjthrough the center of said roll, and a handle portion releasably locked on said casing.
2. A holder adapted to be supported on a toy gun for carrying a paper roll including a casing Wall having releasable locking means at the top thereoside Walls integral with said casing Wall and atV right angles thereto, a roll retaining member rotatably carried in said side Walls by an axis portion formed against removalA from one side Wall and having a radial portion on the outside of saidone side Wall extending to a oombination handle and locking arm for releasable f locking on said casing Wall.
3. A housing forming a cage for the reception of a roll of paper, having an opening for the insertion of such a roll, and having pin insertion openings in its side for the insertion of a pin Ythrough the center of the roll, a pin for insertion in said openings and retaining the roll of paper, and a roll of paper having an internal diameter suiciently large to provide considerable' tolerance in the positioning of the 'roll to securealinementof the passage therethrough with the pin insertion openings in the housing and having an external diameter so related to the internal shape of the housing as to aline said passage with said pin insertion openings whereby the pin may be inserted when a new roll has simply been dropped into the cage.
4. A housing for a roll of strip material and a rotatably movable retaining member having an axial portion extending through the housing at a central position thereof to retain said roll rotatable in said housing, and having a handle portion extending generally radially from the axial portion and adapted to engage the housing to prevent accidental rotation of the handle portion, said housing having a slot through which the axial portion passes, and said axial portion having a laterally extended formation thereon adapted to pass through said slot when the handle portion is in one position to permit removal of the strip material but being engaged by the walls of the slot to prevent axial movement of the retaining member when the handle is locked in another position.
5. A paper support for mounting on a paper burster toy, including a mounting portion, a pair of apertured sidewalls extending from said mounting and both being rigid with reference thereto, a pivoted member having an axis portion pivotally supported at the apertures in said sidewalls, and having a handle portion parallel to said axis portion and extending on the outside of at least one of said sidewalls at right angles thereto, and said paper support having a portion thereon for releasably retaining said handle portion in paper holding position.
