UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE L. HUTOHINSON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
FIOUL-AIR TRAP FOR WASH-BASINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,519, dated April 13, 1880. Application filed September 12, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEssE L. HUTOHINSON, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Foul-Air Traps for \Vash-Basins, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain improvements in devices for preventing the admission of foul air and gases to rooms through or by means of the waste-pipe leading from the wash-basin to a sink or other receptacle for waste-water; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the said devices, as will hereinafter fully appear.
The drawing forming a part hereof is a sectional view of a wash-basin and its attachments embodying my invention.
A is the wash-basin, and B a cleansingcook constructed substantially the same as that shown in Letters Patent No. 215,928, granted to me on the 27th day of May, 1879, for improvements in cleansing devices for wash-basins. The cock forms a part of the waste-Water pipe, and is secured over the end of the metal casing a. of the nozzle 1) and to adapt the said cock as a portion of the present improvements I form around the inletopening in the same an annular projection, c.
O is a bell suspended from the metal casing a of the waste-water nozzle 1) in such manner as to allow the waste-water to pass around it. The said bell fits loosely over the annular projection c, and forms, in connection with water, which is at all times retained between the said projection and the outer casing of the cook, a seal or trap, which prevents the upward passage of foul air.
It will be understood that the annular projection .0 can be used in the waste-pipe and the cock I) omitted; but the construction shown is preferred.
I am aware that stench-traps have been heretofore used consisting, principally, of a globe-shaped vessel in two sections, the upper bearing an inverted bowl and the lower a pipe entering the said bowl; but such devices are not combined with a cleansing-cock the body of which is adapted to fit or screw over the metal casing of the wash-basin nozzle. Therefore I do not claim said devices unless combined with the cock in the manner herein set forth; but,
Having described my improvements and their operation, I claim as my invention- The nozzle-casing at, having the bell G attached thereto, combined with the cleansingcock B, having its shell provided with the annular projection c, and its upper end .secured over the end of the nozzle-casing a, substantially as specified.
JESSE L. HUTOHINSON.
