4 Claims. (Cl. 2-247) This invention relates to coats, but more particularly. to the pockets thereof and is designed primarily as a pocket construction for sweater coats, but it is to be understood that a pocket construction, in accordance with this invention is for use in connection with any type of coat for which, it may be found applicable.
The invention aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, whereby a front section or front panel of a coat includes inherent means to constitute a pocket opening at the front thereof.
The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a coat of the sweater type whereby the front sections thereof are .so formed as to provide a new and novel form of pocket construction.
The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a coat pocket Which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, conveniently accessible, thoroughly eflicient in its use, readily formed, employing inherent parts of a front panel to form the mouth, front, rear and bottom Walls of the pocket, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

By way of example the pocket structure is illustrated in connection with a coat of the sweater type having its front sections or panels detachably connected together by the well-known form of slide fastener.
There is illustrated but one section or panel of the front of the coat, and it is to be understood that the other section or panel of the coat 51s to correspond in structural arrangement to that section or panel shown. With reference to thedrawings, I indicates a fcldable fabric element which when folded forms the back panel of the garment. The element If includes a stretch or upper portion 2 which tere minates at its inner end into an extension or lower portion 3 gradually decreasing in width fromits free, end edge 4 to its point of mergence with the stretch 2. A portion of the length of the inner side edge 9 of the extension 1 is also secured to a side edge of the extension 3 by the stitching l2. The latter also connects a piping [3 to such stretches and extensions. The piping I3 is continued and is secured to the remaining portion of the inner side edge 9 and throughout the bottom edge IQ of the extension I by a stitching l4 and such portion of the piping on the extension 1 is indicated at l5.

The portion 6 of element 5 is formed with slits l9 at the ends of the slot II, and the material freed between said slits is folded inwardly and downwardly against the inner face of said portion 6, as at 20. Disposed against the fold and extending upwardly therefrom is a folded fabric member 2! of rectangular contour which forms the outer neck portion of a pocket to be referred to. The member 2| is secured at its bottom to the portion 6 of element land to the fold 20 by the stitching 22 and at its ends is also secured to the portions 6 and I of the element 5 by the spaced stitchings 23. The member 2| extends from the bottom wall of slot II to above the top wall of the latter (Figure 4). The material of the portion 6 bordering the top wall of slot I l is folded inwardly, as at 24, and such fold and portions 6, l of element 5 are secured together by the stitching I6. That part of. the portion 6 of element I provided with the infold 24 forms the inner portion of the neck of the pocket to be referred to.
There is secured to theouter marginal portion of the inner face of element 5, whenthe latter is folded by the stitchings I8, 26, a fabric strip 21 extending from the bend 28 of element 5 to the upper end of the'latter and which constitutes a carrier for a slide fastener section 29. The latter is to extend from the bend 28 of element 5 to the top of the garment. The strip 2T and. its securing means act to maintain element 5 in itsfolded position, that is to say secures the extension or lower portion 1 of element 5 against the inner face of the stretch or upper portion 6 of such element. 7
The extension or lower portion 3 of element I, when the extension or lower portion 1 of 'element 5 is folded against the portion 6, is positioned against the rear face ofportion 2 and a part of the inner face of the front panel, and it is secured in such position by the stitching 30. The extension 2 has an end thereof overlap a part of the piping l2 and a part of the portion l5 of such piping as is shown in Figure 2.

The stitching it provides for the portion 1 of element 5 to be a continuation of the portion 6- of such element, asis shown by Figure 4.
Each of the-front panels-or sections, only one shown, of the garment will be formed with a pocket 32 having its bottom provided by the bend 28; its back wall formed by a" part of the extension-or lower portion 1 of'element 5; its frontwall provided by a part of the "stretch or upper por-' lower end into a foldable extension positioned against the inner face of said part, said part being formed intermediate its ends with a slot, said extension projecting above said slot, the bend between said part and extension forming a pocket bottom, said part having a portion thereof forming a pocket front wall, said extension having a portion thereof forming a pocket rear wall, spaced means for securing said part and extension together forming pocket side walls and defining the portions of said part and extension constituting said front and rear walls, and means connected to and extending inwardly from a wall of said slot and coacting with another portion of said part bordering the opposite wall of said slot forming the neck and mouth of the pocket.

In a coat having a back and front panel, said front panel including an upper part fixed at its inner side to the back and merging at its lower end into a foldable. extension positioned against the inner face of said part, said part being formed intermediate its ends with a slot, said extension projecting above said slot, the bend between said part and extension forming a pocket bottom, said part having a portion thereof forming a pocket front wall, said extension having a portion thereof forming a pocket rear wall, spaced means forsecuring said part and extension together forming pocket side Walls and defining the portions of said part and extension constituting said front and rear walls, means connected to and extending upwardly from a wall of said slot and coacting with another portion of said part bordering the opposite wall of said slot forming the neck and mouth'of the pocket, and a continuous reinforcing means for the inner side of said part and the inner side and outer end of said extension.

In a coat having a back and front panel, said front panel including an upper part fixed at its inner side to the back and merging at its lower end into a foldable extension positioned against the inner face of said part, said part being formed intermediate its ends with a slot, said extension projecting above said slot, the bend between said part and extension forming a pocket bottom, said part having a portion thereof forming a pocket front wall, said extension having a portion thereof forming a pocket rear wall, spaced means for securing said part and extension together forming pocket side walls and defining the portions of said part and extension constituting said front and rear Walls, means connected to and extending upwardly from a wall of said slot and coacting with another portion of said part bordering the opposite wall of said slot forming the neck and mouth of the pocket, and'means for securing said part above said slot to the outer end of said extension to provide the latter as a depending continuation'of said part rearwardly of the slot.
