This invention relates to helmets having anticoncussion pads, that is to say a resilient pad or pads fitted beneath the crown of the body of a helmet for absorbing shock and relieving the wearer thereof in the event of the helmet receiving a blow. Up to the present, rivet and like fastenings have been employed for fixing said paid or pads to the intersecting straps which form the crown of the helmet body, but such rivets or the like are liable to contact with the wearers head and cause injury if a blow is received.
The object of the present invention is to dispense With such rivets and the like and provide a single securing means for the pad or pads which is of such a nature that same cannot cause injury to the wearer, said securing means forming a unitary part of the pad and being such that the pad can be easily and expeditiously fixed in place.
According to this invention, the resilient pad which can be of any suitable shape, has at its center part a countersunk portion which is of a harder nature than the rest of the pad. The said countersunk portion is constructed so that a securing bolt can pass therethrough. Moreover, means may be provided for locating the pad in position against turning.
The hard nature of the countersunk portion which is conveniently in the form of a disc, enables the bolt or the like to pass therethrough without the danger of its pulling through. It will be understood that the fixing means will be appropriately formed, and by providing a recess in the underside of the pad for the reception of a nut or the like, the single fixing means will be prevented from causing injury to the head of the wearer.
The pad may be of elliptical shape of sponge rubber, and the means for locating same in position may be formed by slightly doming the pad and by providing cutaway portions to form intersecting grooves in its major and minor axes, the cross-over straps of the lining fitting therein. Upstanding projections or the like may be provided to serve as the positioning means and it will be understood that when the pad and lining are secured to the shell, the tightening of the securing means will compress the projections or the like above the straps assisting in locating the pad securely in position.
In order that a clear understanding of the invention may be obtained, reference will now be made to the accompanying sheet of drawings which illustrate a preferred form of pad constructedin accordance with this invention and its method of fitting within a helmet and where- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pad, and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of a line from front to rear, of a, helmet incorporating the pad.
In the preferred form illustrated, the pad is of sponge rubber and of cross form, having one arm I which lies beneath the front to rear cross strap 1, and the other arm 2 which lies beneath the side to side cross strap 8. At the junction of the sides of adjacent arms, upstanding quadrant, shaped projections 3 are provided leaving cross-over channels 4 for the reception of the straps I, 8. A disc like member 5 of hard rubber is moulded in the central aperture in the pad leaving a recess 6 on the underside of the pad, the said disc like member 5 lying flush with the upper surface of the pad.
In assembling the helmet, the pad is first placed in position on the lining, which lining is secured in position within the shell 9 by means of a bolt member Hi, the shank of which passes through the aperture I l in the disc 5, said shank having the domed disc-like member or securing nut I2 screwed thereon, said member being housed within the recess.
I claim:
1. A resilient pad for use in a protective helmet, said pad comprising a member of cross shape of sponge rubber, with a central aperture therein, and a disc-like portion of hard rubber within said aperture with its upper face flush with the upper face of the pad, said disc-like portion having a bolt receiving aperture therein, and four upstanding substantially quadrant shape projections on the upper face of the said pad, one at each junction of adjacent and uniting sides of the arms of the cross, forming means for positioning the pad on the cross-over members of the lining, the said pad and lining being held in position within the shell of the helmet by means of a bolt, the shank of which passes through aligning apertures in the shell, the lining and in the disc, the said bolt being held by a nut which is housed in the recess'beneath the disc.
2. A resilient pad for use in a protective helm'et, formed in the shape of a cross with intersecting arms of soft resilient material and adapted for the passage of crossed straps over said arms respectively, said pad being provided at the intersection of said arms with fastening means for fastening said pad to the top of the helmet.
3. A resilient pad for use in a protective helmet formed in the shape of a cross with intersecting arms of soft resilient material and adapted for the passage of crossed straps over said arms respectively, said arms being relatively thick, and a disc member which is relatively thin and relatively hard with reference to said arms formed integrally in said pad in the intersection area thereof flush with one face of said pad, said pad being provided in its intersection area with a recess registering with said disc member and extending to the other face of said pad.
4. A resilient pad for use in a protective helsecting channels for guiding the passage of cross straps over said arms respectively.
5. A resilient pad for use in a protective helmet formed in the shape of a cross with intersecting arms of soft resilient material, and four guide members attached to said pad in the four angles between its intersecting arms respectively and projecting above one face of said arms and forming intersecting channels for guiding the passage of cross straps over said arms respectively, said arms being relatively thick, and a disc met formed in the shape of .a cross with interabove one face of said arms and forming intermember which is relatively thin and relatively hard with reference to said arms formed integrally in said pad in the intersection area thereof flush with the face thereof above which said guide members project, said pad being provided in its intersection area with a recess registering with said disc member and extending to the othr face of said pad.
