This invention pertains to liquid dispensing apparatus, and more particularly to an emergency control therefor.
It is an object of this invention to provide emergency control mechanism for liquid dispensing apparatus which is operative to render said liquid dispensing apparatus inoperative under predetermined conditions.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for preventing liquid from being dispensed should fire occur adjacent a liquid dispensing apparatus embodying such means.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device which is positive in operation andis inexpensive to manufacture and maintain and which effectively renders a liquid dispensing apparatus inoperative should a fire occur therein or adjacent thereto.
Yet a further object of the invention is to provide a safety control for liquid dispensing apparatus which may readily be applied to conventional standard pumps without the necessity of modifying the exteriors thereof, or providing pumps necessitating different operation from the standard pump.
With these and various other objects in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specification, drawings and claims appended hereto.
In the drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of the device and wherein like reference characters are used to designate like parts- Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional elevation through a liquid dispensing apparatus showing the application thereto of one form of the control embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional top plan View showing the control illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional side elevation of the control shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation of a modified form of control embodying the invention;
Figure 5 is an'enlarged fragmentary end elevation of a portion of the control illustrated in base or pedestal l0 provided with the usual casing l2. The form of liquid dispensing apparatus illustrated is shown more particularly in Patent No. 2,159,625 Arnold et al., granted May 23, 1939. Within the casing there is provided a pump [4, the suction side of which is adapted to be connected through a suitable connection 16 to a source of liquid supply such as a tank.- The outlet side of the pump is adapted to be connected through a suitable connection l8 to the inlet side of the meter 20. The outlet side of the meter, as is usual, is connected to suitable dispensing means such as a hose and nozzle not shown, the meter being adapted to drive registering means such as illustrated in Patent No. 2,151,239 Slye et al., granted March 21, 1939.
In the embodiment shown the pump is provided with the pulley 22 adapted to be rotated by means of the belt 24 driven by the pulley 26 and the motor 28. The motor 28 is provided with a suitable switch control 30 wherein the switch is provided with the switch arm 32 pivotally connected through asuitable link 34 to the usual hand operating means, such as the push button or pivoted lever (not shown). The link 34 is provided with the stop member 35, and the lever 38 is pivoted as at 40 adjacent the stop member 36. The arm 42 of said lever embraces the link 34 as through a suitable slot 44 (or it may be bifurcated), and the opposite arm 46 of said lever is provided with the weight 48 whereby the lever 38 is urged in a clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 1. A spring, of course, may be used instead of said weight.
Normally the lever 38 is maintained in inoperative position, that is, a position where the link 34 is free to be raised and lowered by the hand operating means without interference by the lever 38, by means of the fusible wire or link 50 which is adapted to melt at some predetermined temperature, as for example, at 200 F. One end of said wire is secured to the extension 52 of the lever 38, and the other end of said wire extends through a suitable aperture or opening 54 provided in the pump casing l2, whereby a portion of the wire is disposed externally of said casing. A suitable bracket 56 is secured adjacent said opening, and the outer end of the wire extends over a rounded portion 58 of said bracket and is anchored or secured adjacent to the lower portion of said opening, as at 60.
, As illustrated, a portion of the bracket extending into the opening 54 is preferably rounded as at 58, and the wire may be maintained or fixed around said rounded portion by means of the channel 82. In this form of device, therefore, should heat within the casing, or

pump casing I8 is provided with the opening I2 which is adapted to be closed by means of the bracket H. The bracket I4 is provided with the bi-metallic strip 18 secured adjacent to one end thereof, as at I8, to the bracket, the other end thereof being bifurcated as at 88. Within the casing I8 the lever 82 is provided, said lever being provided with the upstanding arm 84 provided with the pin 88 extending through the arcuate slot 88 provided in said bracket 14 and being normally engaged withinsaid bifurcation whereby the lever 82 is held in a predetermined position. The arm '88 of said lever is provided with a counterweight 82 (or its equivalent such as a spring) urging said lever in a clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 4. As before, the opposite arm 88 of said lever 82 suitably embraces the link 88, being normally spaced from the stop member 88 provided thereon.
In this embodiment the link '88 may be connected as at I88 to the switch arm I82. It also may be connected as at I88 to the control valve I88 disposed in the dispensing or suction line I88. It is of course understood that the arm 88, as well as the arm 42, may only beconnected to a control valve such as the control valve I88. In this embodiment, therefore, should the temperature within or adjacent the casing rise above a predetermined amount, the bi-metallic strip I8 would move in a counterclockwise direction around the securing means 18 (Figure releasing the pin 88 from the bi-metallic strip. The weight 82 would then move downwardly, causing the link 88 to move upwardly to open the motor switch and close the control valve I88, if both were used, or to control either should only one be used.
It is further appreciated that the fusible link or bi-metallic strip may be used so that it is disposed in the pump casing and/or exposed outwardly of the casing and controls a switch other than the motor switch used in the normal operation of the pump.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited by the exact embodiment of the device shown, which is merely by way of illustration and not limitation as various and other forms of the device will of course be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a casing, a flow line in said casing, liquid forcing means in said flow line, control means for said liquid forcing means including a member movable to open and closed positions, movable means for moving said member to closed position, and temperature control means disposed within said casing and extending externally thereof normally maintaining said last named means inoperative, said temperature control means being adapted to release said movable assesses means when a predetermined temperature is obtained adjacent thereto.
2. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a casing,.a flow line in said casing, liquid forcing means in said flow line, control means for said liquid forcing means including a member movable to open and closed positions, movable means for moving said member to closed position, said movable means including a lever, said lever having a portion for moving said movable member, means for moving said portion to move said movable member to closed position, and temperature control means engaging said lever and holding it in inoperative position, said temperature control means being adapted to re-' lease said lever from inoperative position when a predetermined temperature is obtained adjacent thereto. said temperature control means including a bi-metallic strip.
8. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a casing, a flow line in said casing, liquid forcing means in said flow line, control means for said liquid forcing means including a member movable to open and closed positions, movable means for moving said member to closed position, said movable means including a lever, said lever having a portion for moving said movable member, means for moving said .portion to move said movable member to closed position, said casing being apertured, a bracket disposed adjacent the aperture, temperature control means fastened to said bracket and having a portion disposed outwardly of said housing and supported on said bracket, said temperature control means extending inwardly of said housing and engaging said lever and holding it in inoperative position, said temperature control means being adapted to release said lever from inoperative position when a predetermined temperature is obtained adjacent thereto.
4. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a casing, a flow line in said casing, liquid forcing means in said flow line, control means for said liquid forcing means including a member movable to open and closed positions, movable means for moving said member to closed position, said movable means including a lever, said lever having a portion for moving said movable member, means for moving said portion to move said movable member to closed position, said casing being apertured, a bracket disposed adjacent the aperture, temperature control means fastened to said bracket and having a portion disposed outwardly of said housing and supported on said bracket, said temperature control means engaging said lever and holding it in inoperative position. said temperature control means being adapted to release said lever from inoperative position when a predetermined temperature is obtained adjacent thereto.
5. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a casing, a flow line in said casing, liquid forcing means in said flow line, control means for said liquid forcing means including a member movable to open and closed positions, movable means for moving said member to closed position, said movable means including a lever, said lever having a portion for moving said movable member, means for moving said portion to move said movable member to closed position, said casing being apertured, a bracket disposed adjacent the aperture, temperature control means fastened to said bracket and having a portion disposed outwardly of said housing and supported on said bracket, said temperature control means including a fusible link engaging said lever and holding it in inoperative position, said temperature control means being adapted to release'said lever from inoperative position when a predetermined temperature is obtained adjacent thereto.
6. In liquiddispensing apparatus, the combination of a casing, a flow line in said casing, liquid forcing means in said flow line, control means for said liquid forcing means including a member movable to open and closed positions, movable means for moving said member to closed position, said movable means including a lever, said lever having a portion for moving said movable member, means for moving said portion to move said movable member to closed position, said casing being apertured, a bracket disposed adjacent the aperture, temperature control means fastened to said bracket and disposed outwardly of said housing, said temperature control means including a bi-metallic strip engaging said lever and holding it in inoperative position, said temperature control means being adapted to release said lever from inoperative position when a predetermined temperature is obtained adjacent thereto.
7. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a casing, a flow line in said casing, liquid forcing means in said flow line, control means for said liquid forcing means including a member movable to open and closed positions, movable means for moving said member to closed position, said movable means including a lever,

8. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of a casing, a flow line in said casing, liquid forcing means in said flow line, control means for said liquid forcing means including a member movable to open and closed positions, other control means for said flow line, movable means for moving said member and said other control means to closed positions, and temperature control means normally maintaining said last named means inoperative, said temperature control means being adapted to release said movable means when a predetermined temperature is obtained adjacent thereto.
9. In liquid dispensing apparatus, the combination of liquid forcing means, a liquid flow line connected to said forcing means, operating means for selectively operating said forcing means, temperature control means for rendering said forcing means inoperative when a predetermined temperature is obtained adjacent thereto, said temperature control means including a normally inoperative member, and temperature aflected means for releasing said member to permit said member to render said operating means inoperative.
