The present invention relates to vacuum or pressure apparatus such as cathode ray tubes or like apparatus wherein an element arranged within the vacuum chamber is to be renewed.
The invention more particularly pertains to means for sealing such apparatus by means of a packing arrangement which will permit a renewable element within the vacuum chamber to be removed and replaced without destroying the pressure within the apparatus. The invention, for example, relates to packing means which will permit a photographic plate to be removed from a cathode ray oscillograph tube without destroying the vacuum therein.
An object of the invention includes the provision of a permanent seal for the pressure apparatus which permits a given pressure or vacuum to be maintained within the apparatus and also provides means for sealing the vacuum or pressure chamber when an element is removed from the apparatus.
Other and further features and objects of the invention will be readily apparent upon a consideration of the accompanying drawing and the following description wherein an exemplary embodiment of the invention is disclosed.

Fig. 1 is a sectional view illustrating means for removing an element from the vacuum chamber and showing means for sealing the chamber during removal of an element from the vacuum chamber.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the apparatus taken on the line IIII of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing there is shown at k a housing which forms a part of the apparatus such as a cathode ray tube wherein a vacuum is maintained. A tubular member a extends through the housing It and is sealed with respect to the walls of the cathode ray tube. The tubular member a serves as guiding means for an elongated piston b which may be longitudinally moved in the tubular member a by means of a threaded shaft n rotated by means of a crank q.
The piston b is provided with a recess for receiving an element 1. to be renewed which may take the form of a photographic plate. The piston b is also provided with a longitudinally extending slot p so that the plate element t may be removed from the recess through the slot 10.
A tube b of substantially the same diameter as the tubular member a is arranged in alinement with the guide tube a with an end thereof adjacent the end of the tubular member. The outer end of the tube b is sealed by means of a removable plug m and a packing i.
The end of the tube b arranged adjacent the end of the tubular member a is provided with an annular shoulder g and an axially extending flange d. The inner surface of the flange d is machined to fit the outer surface of the tubular member a and tooverlap an end portion of the tubular member. Packing means 0 are arranged between the adjacent ends of the tube 1). and the tubular member a. The packing means may be of any well known yieldable type.
The tubular member a is also provided with an annular shoulder 1 which carries threads on the outer periphery thereof. An elastic bellows h extends between the shoulders g and h and is welded or soldered to these shoulders so as to provide means for permanently sealing the connection between the tube b and the tubular member a. The tube 12 and the tubular member a are more securely joined by means of a nut e which is provided with a depending flange engaging the shoulder g and also carrying threads for engagement with the threads of the shoulder f. Thus the tubular member a and the tube 17 are held in proper alinement and may be moved towards each other by rotation of the nut e.
When it is desired to remove the plate element t from a position where it is subjected to pressure within the chamber is the piston b is moved to the left of the position illustration in Fig. 1 by rotation of the crank q. Rotation of the threaded shaft 11. causes the piston to slide to the left and the piston is prevented from rotation within the tubular member a by means of the projection 12 as shown in Fig. 2. The piston therefore enters the tube b and this tube may be long enough to accommodate that portion of the piston which is provided with the recess 0. With the piston b in such a position a seal for the vacuum chamber is is provided by rotating the nut e so as to move the shoulder 9 towards the tubular member a and compress the packing means 0. The packing means is thus forced-into engagement with the periphery of the piston b so as to provide means for preventing leakage between the piston and the tubular member a and the tube b. The radially inward movement of the packing means 0 also binds the piston so as to prevent movement thereof.
Thereafter the plug m may be removed without danger of disturbing the vacuum pressure within the chamber is and the plate element 15 may be removed from the recess as through the slot p. A new element may be thereafter introduced into the recess and after the plug 112. has been reinserted and the packing z drawn tightly thereagainst the original pressure within the space a: may be restored by exhausting air or adding air thereto through the pipe r. Thus the pressure within the space a: may be rendered such as to be equal to the pressure within the chamber k. Thereafter the nut e may be turned to release the pressure on the packing 0 so as to permit the piston b to be moved to the right in Fig. 1 and the plate element 17 may thus be conveyed to a position so as to be subjected to the operations taking place within the chamber ic. Even though the packing e no longer provides a positive seal between the ends of the tubular member a and the tube b the bellows h nevertheless provides means for sealing the ends of the tubular member and the tube. The bellows II. also permits relative movement of .the tube with respect to the tubular member.
While the invention has been described with reference to packing means for sealing a vacuum chamber during the removal of a photographic plate it is to be understood that other elements of a vacuum or pressure apparatus such as a cathode may be arranged within the recess 0 and removed from the vacuum chamber for replacement without disturbing the pressure within the housing. Such changes may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In vacuum electrical reaction apparatus, a tubular member in open communication with the vacuum, a piston adapted to carry a removable element so as to be subjected to the vacuum, a tube alined with the tubular member, packing means arranged between the adjacent ends of the tube and the tubular member, said piston being movable into said tube, means for moving the tube toward the tubular member for urging the packing into sealed engagement with the periphery of the piston, a bellows arranged outside the packing means sealing the adjacent ends of the tube and the tubular member, and removable means for sealing the outer end of the tube.
2. In electrical reaction apparatus,'a housing having a pressure therein differing from atmospheric pressure, a tubular member sealed with respect to said housing and the interior of the tubular member being in communication with the interior of said housing, a tube axially aligned with the tubular member, a piston slidable in said tubular member and said tube and adapted to support an element to be subjected to the reaction taking place in said housing, packing means adjacent ends of said tubular member and said tube, means for moving the tubular member and the tube towards each other for urging the packing means into sealed engagement with the periphery of said piston, yieldable means sealing the adjoining ends of said tubular member and said tube and removable means sealing the free end of said tube.
3. In electrical discharge apparatus, a housing having a pressure therein differing from atmospheric pressure, a tubular member sealed with respect to the housing with the interior thereof communicating with said housing, a tube axially aligned with the tubular member, a piston slidable in said tubular member and said tube adapted to support an element to be subjected to the discharge in said housing, packing means intermediate adjoining ends of said tubular member and said tube, annular means surrounding said packing means preventing outward expansion of the packing means, means for moving the tubular member and tube towards each other for urging the packing means into sealed engagement with the periphery of the piston, yieldable means sealing the adjoining ends of said tubular member and said tube, and removable means sealing the free end of said tube.
4. In electrical discharge apparatus, a housing having a reduced pressure therein, a tubular member sealed with respect to the housing with the interior thereof communicating with said housing, a tube axially aligned with the tubular member, a piston slidable in said tubular member and said tube adapted to support an element to be subjected to the reduced pressure in said housing, packing means, intermediate adjoining ends of said tubular member and said tube, an annular axially extending flange carried by the tube surrounding the packing means and an end portion of said tubular member, means for moving the tubular member and the tube towards each other for urging the packing means into sealed engagement with the periphery of said piston, a yieldable bellows connecting the adjoining ends of said tubular member and said tube, and removable means sealing the free end of said tube.
5. In electrical discharge apparatus, a housing having a reduced pressure therein, a tubular member extending into the housing and sealed with respect thereto, said tubular member having an opening therein, a tube axially aligned with the tubular member, a piston slidable longitudinally in said tubular member and said tube, said piston having a lateral recess therein adapted to be arranged adjacent said opening for receiving an element to be subjected to a phenomena adapted to take place in said housing, a yieldable packing arranged between adjoining ends of the tubular member and the tube, means for moving the tubular member and the tube towards each other for urging the packing into engagement with the periphery of the piston, means preventing outward expansion of said packing, yieldable means sealing the adjoining ends of the tubular member and the tube, and removable means sealing the free end of said tube.

In electrical discharge apparatus, a housing having a reduced pressure therein, a tubular member extending into the housing and sealed with respect thereto, said tubular member having an opening therein, a tube axially aligned with the tubular member, a piston slidable 1ongitudinally in said tubular member and said tube, said piston. having a lateral recess therein adapted to be arranged adjacent said opening for receiving an element to be subjected to a phenomena adapted to take-place in said housing, a yieldable packing arranged between adjoining ends of the tubular member and the tube, a threaded nut for moving the tubular member and the tube towards each other to urge the packing into sealed engagement with the periphery of the piston, an annular flange preventing radial outward expansion of said packing, a flexible bellows connecting the adjoining ends of the tubular member and the tube, and removable means sealing the free end of the tube.
