The present invention relates to spray appliances, and more particularly to such types in which a hand-held spray device is detachably mounted on the cover ofa so called Siphon c up or pressure cup containing the material to be sprayed, such as paint or the like, so that the assemblage can be, readily manipulated as a unit by the hand grasping the'usual handle ofthe spray device.
Illustrative of the provisions commonly employed for this purpose, the Hersleb Reissue Patent #16,960 disclosed the detachablev clamping of a container or cup to a cover and a paint inlet tube adapted to be attached to the usual depending material inlet of a spray gun. For this purpose, the container had to be provided with projecting lugs which afforded part of the needed clamping means, thus making it necessary to procolors and other variations of paints and the like ried by the adapter, as in alug extending inwardly thereof, and having at its lower end a .cam pro-- beneath the opening in the can top to a positionI beneath the annular top where the cam bears upwardly, as with a wedging action, against the underside of the annular-top of -the can, to clamp the adapter down upon the inner edge of the annular top. cost of a large number of such specially constructed containers by providing means whereby a cover and inlet'pipe assembly can readily be clamped directly to cans of a type in which a small quantities of paints are now furnished by manufacturers of paints or the like. when these cans haveannular tops of certain types, thereby eliminating the need of speciallyy constructed containers, and affording a single assemblage of a spray device with suitably designed provisions to be used interchangeably with any one of innumerable cans of different sprayable material.
Among the .objects of the invention is to provide a novel means for detachably connecting a spray device having a depending inlet pipe to a spray material containing can, suchas a paint can, in which the material to be sprayed is supplied, the can being of the type having an annular top in which is provided a pouring opening o'r mouth within the inner edge of such annular top; such novel means comprising an annular adapter detach-ably seated with a sealing contact with.

In the illustrative -embodiment each latching or locking member comprises a shaft rotatably car- Thel present invention aims to obviate the high part of the annular top of the can from either direction of turning of the latching or locking member. Thel annular top of the can may be provided with an annular grooved or downwardly extending portion, v-kshaped or U-shaped in cross-section, and being concentric with the inner edge of the annular top of the can, the latching or locking cams bearing upward against such grooved or downwardly extending portion. The finger piece and the cam of each latching member preferably extend laterally from the shaft and are disposed in vertical alinement so that the iinger piece, which is above the lug, will serve to indicate the position of the cam relative to the annular top part of the can.
Other objects, advantages, capabilities, features, and the like are comprehended by the invention as will later appear and as are inherently possessed by the invention. e Referring to the drawing:

Referring more in detail to the'drawing, the
embodiment selected to illustrate the invention is shown in connection with a spray gun I, com- 's body 2 is provideda spray nozzle l of any suit- 1 able type and at an intermediate point of the body 2 is pivotally mounted a trigger l cooperating with valve stems 1 and 3 suitably connected to valves for controlling the flow or passage of compressed air and material to the nozzle 5. The body 2 comprises a depending inlet l to` which is connected a duct portion. Il by way of a suitable coupling II. The lower part of this duct portion has threads. I2 and a reduced diameter extension I3 connected by a coupling 20 Il to an inlet pipe I5, the lower end portion of which is bent and extends down into the can or container Il, through the opening in the top thereof.
About the duct portion III is slidably supported eral flange 24 within which is an annular sealing 35 gasket or ring 25. The cover 2| may-be provided\ with an air vent 26. On the threaded portion I2 of the pipe part I0 and between the hub I3 of the yoke I1 and the central portion of the cover 2| is threadedly engaged a tightening or clamp- 40 ing nut 21 to which is connected'an arm 23 pro,- vided at its end with an upstanding nger piece 29 by which the arm may be swung so as to turn the nut and to cause the same to press upwardly against the hub I8 and to eii'ect a relative up- 4:,

The present invention comprehends an adapter for connecting the above described closure attachment to the upper end oi.' a can such as can 50- IB referred to above. As shown, the adapter comprises a circular band or annular member 3l of hollow cylindrical form and which has at its upe per edge a seat 3| adapted to have a sealing contact with the gasket or sealing ring 25, and 55 which has at its lower edge a channel 32 in which is provided a sealing gasket or ring 33 so located as to have a sealing contact with the beaded inner edge v3l of an annular top part 35 of the can I6, this top part extending inwardly 60 from theA upper end 35 of the can or container It. This annular top 35 comprises a downwardly extending annular portion 31, V-shaped or U-shaped in cross section, having an outer spun or lapped portion 38 secured to the upper end 35 65 of the can I6, and comprisesinner and outer parts 39 and I0 and a bottom or trough portion 4I. l
Extending inwardly from` the inner surface of the band are provided, preferably integrally,
vertically disposed` lugs or bosses l2 providedy 70 with vertical bores in -which are rotatably mounted shafts I3 of the locking mechanism.
Each shaft comprises a shaft part 4l having squared heads I5 and'lt and a squared body rfportion 41. The cam is preferablnprovided withaninclineduppersurfacelltoactwitha 'edging action upwardly against the lower part of the annulariop 35.
The cam may have a double wedge shape (Fig. 1) in which may be provided oppositely inclined upper surfaces Il whereby either of such surfaces may bear upwardly against the annular top 3l in either direction of rotation of the latching device. f
lIn assembling the device, the adapter is first attached to the can by placing the adapter with the gasket-33m contact with the beaded inner edge 34 ofthe can top 35 and then turning the finger pieces Il digitally or manually so as to turntheshaftswiththecamsII. Thesecams extend laterally from the shafts and as they are turned the inclined cam face I3 will engage with the lower portion 4I of the top 35 and-press upwardly against it so as to draw downwardly the band to clamp it and the gasket 33 into close gealing contact with the beaded edge 34 of the In Fig. 3 the finger piece and cam are shown in dotted line position when, in unlocked condition,` and in full line position when the same have been turned to bring the cam under and against the lower portion of the top mentioned.
It will also be noted that the finger pieces extend vertically above the cams and preferably .are in vertical alignment with a medial line of the cam radially to the axis of the shaft ,so that the finger pieces will serve as an indicating means of `the positions of the cams relative to the top with which the cams engage.

'I he appliance is then turned so as to bring the hooks 20 into engagement with radially extending lugs or trunnions l5 fixed tothe outer periphery of the band 30. ln this relation of the parts the trunnions extend into the openings of the hooks 2l. Then the arm 23 is swungto the right as viewed in -Figure 2 so as to cause the nut 21 to riseon the threads I2 and to raise the hub I3 of the yoke I1, thus causing the hooks 20 to press upwardly against the trunnions 5 5 to cause theband 3l to press tightly againstvthe gasket 25 and thus effect a close sealing contact. Since the cover 2| is screwed tight to the lower threaded` portion I2 of the duct part III, the cover 2| is not moved.
