Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ESCUDIER, OF PATTERSONVILLE, LOUISIANA.
BATI-IING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,636, dated January 18, 1859*.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES EscUDIER, of the town of Pattersonville, parish of St. Mary, Louisiana, native of France and naturalized citizen of United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bathing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure No. l is an outside view; Fig. No. 2, an inside view and the remaining detached parts of said improvement for easier appreciation of the same in following ex- ,planation.
l. The bathing tub is modeled after the ancient model having at its lowest extremity a partition made water proof leaving a vacancy remaining at all times free and reserved for the placing of the furnace and boilers, as seen by letters A, B. At the bottom of the remaining part of the tub is a l metal conductor adjusted on the inside running fore and aft perforated with small holes, placed at proper distances as seen by letter, C, the steam being conveyed into the said conductor by means of a faucet leading from the main boiler into it as seen by letter D.
2. The apparatus is so disposed as to afford the easy application of any aromatic or medicinal bath in this manner, a small boiler, E, equivalent in size to the flue of the main boiler, F, is introduced in said flue and put in motion by the same means of the first and larger boiler using the same furnace, alcohol cup, etc., as seen by reference to letter, Gr, the said small boiler-being connected with the main by means of a faucet leading into it in order that the steam or vapor of aromatics or other agents may readily mingle with the vapor of water contained into the main boiler before being admitted into the conductor. See letter H. The boilers are subject to being used independent from each other.
3. The bottom of the largest section of the apparatus is furnished with a false bottom made of wood well perforated for the admission of steam and sufficiently elevated to prevent the danger of being scalded by a sudden admission of steam. See letter I. Besides this two stools temporarily inserted to enable the patient to undergo the bath in a sitting posture. See letter J. Both boilers are supplied with safety valves to avoid any danger that may result from a high pressure of steam. See letter K.
4L. In case that the patient from debility or any other cause be unable to enter the bath or remove from his bed a stand, see letter' L, made for the purpose, is placed on the bed above the patient and on that stand the steam conductor is placed (taken from the apparatus) see letter M, then raising by means of the strap, N, the wires of semicircles made and adjusted on the steam pipe for the purpose, see letter C, which forms an arch over the patient on which can rest any kind of covering sufficient to keep the steam within. The boilers and furnace are then placed on a table or stand at the foot of the bed and by means of a small metal pipe bent accordingly and fixed to the faucet of the main boiler, letter D, connecting the same to the steam pipe in like as in the bathing tub, Fig. 2, being produced by same furnace alcohol cup, etc., letter Z). The stand is made lower at one of its extremities so that the water condensed in it tends naturally toward it, wherefrom it is taken out by a faucet, letter I), and received into any kind of vase, letter G.
5. The same pipe, boilers, etc., act as a heating process when a hot water bath is required to be replaced in their position in the bathing tub and raising steam in both boilers and admitting the same in the water trough the metal pipe it will warm the water in a short space of time. For ordinary cold water baths the apparatus answers as well as ordinary tubs and dont take any more room.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The new application in bathing apparatus of two boilers and steam pipe connected thereto affording when united an apparatus for the application of whatever kind of bath may be desired.
