l WSTAGY & DeL. BENJAMIN.
y Washing-Machine., I No. 226,365. Patented April 6, 1.8460. v f Ivg] f r 1l 'h A u A .4. Y my v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM STAGY AND DE LAUT BENJAMIN, OF COTTAGE, IOWA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.l 226,365, dated April 6, 1880.
Application filed December 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WM. STAGY and DE LAUT BENJAMIN, of Cottage, in the county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and we do hereby deolare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
.This invention relates to an improvement in washing-machines; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out by the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the gudgeon and bearing, and Fig. 4 is a top or plan View of the board D.
A A represent the side pieces, B B representthe two top pieces, E E represent. the two end pieces, and F F F represent the three bottoni pieces of the body.
C represents a V-shaped slat or rib running crosswise of the machine from the side pieces, A A, with a slat or rib at the point of each angle, and one half-way between, for the purpose of holding the side pieces, A A, in proper place and supporting the same, and also to receive a portion of the force and weight of the garments. The object of the V- shaped slats or ribs is to present a roughened surface to the garments, against which they rub by the rocking motion of the machine, which increases the washing facilities of the machine.
The V-shaped ribs are also fastened to the under side of the pieces B, and run lengthwise thereof, for the purpose of having the garments strike against them. The V-shaped ribs are also fastened to the boards D D, secured to the side pieces, A A, upon the inside of the machine. These boards D are convex on one side, and are tapering from top to bottom. They are placed in the machine in a vertical position, so that when the machine is rocked and the water strikes them itis guided toward the center of the machine, passes through the contracted space out to the end ofthe machine, thereby greatly increasing the washing facilities of the device.
Gr G represent the pieces running perpendicularly on the outsides of the pieces A, for the purpose of prevent-ing the said side pieces from warping or splitting, and to receive the hangings or bearings by which vthe machine swings.
H is the handle, for the purpose of operating the machine. I is the counter-balance, to assist inthe operation.
K represents a at piece of metal, with a gudgeon or bearing, a. This gudgeon or bearing passes through the posts L near the top, and into the pieces G and side pieces, A.
L represents two-posts fastened to feet O,
'cross-piece M, and brace N. l?V represents a clasp-bolt passing through posts L and on each side of piece M.
Q is an opening in the end of the machine in pieces B, for the purpose of drawing off the suds. S is a suitable top, held by button b.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In aWashing-machine, the body composed of the pieces A B E F, arranged as shown, tapering convex boards D, attached vertically to the inner sides of the machine, in the center thereof, and V-shaped slats C upon the inside of said body, in combination with the standards L, heads K, gudgeon a, and counter-balance I, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM STACY. DE LAUT BENJAMIN.
