Y., a corporation of Virginia Application June 21, 193s, serial No. .214,869 A 1 claim. 2 (cl. 24o-2) This invention relates in general to dry Shavers and in particular to illuminating dry Shavers, in which an arrangement for illuminating the area to be shaved is carried by the shaver and in effect forms a part thereof.
Coordinately therewith it relates to a light source peculiarly adapted to cooperate effectively with a dry shaver to secure eiiicient illumination of the area to be shaved.
The general object of my invention is the provision in a dry shaver of an illuminating arrangement that is simple, compact and low in cost and effective in operation and which will not necessif tate anysubstantial change inthe dimensions or contours of a dry shaver of conventional type.

These objects and such other objects as will hereinafter appear or be pointed out are attained in the illustrative embodiments ofv my invention disclosed in the drawing wherein:

He 'may also iind that the illuminating means is readily damaged and that in order to avoid such damage extreme care in handling the shaver is required. Ijle may even nd that such damage is apt to occur during ordinary use of the dry shaver.
He may further find that it repairs are necessary or if replacement is needed, as when an incandescent bulb burns out, that the operation of removing the bulb and replacing it, or of gaining access to the parts to be repaired is extremely troublesome and time consuming.
Among the objects of my invention are therefore the provision in a dry shaver of an illuminating arrangement so positioned thatit will not obscure the shaversview in the mirror of the area to be shaved; the provision in a dry shaver of an illuminating arrangement that will throw light on an area adjacent to and a little in advance of the shaver head; the provision in a dry shaver of a lighting arrangement that permits of ready accessibility to the parts thereof; the

In the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2 I have shown at l0 a portion of the casing of a dry shaver of conventional type carrying a shaver head I2 and also provided withsuitable mechanism such as a lever I4 pivoted at I6 to operate theshaver head. This lever may be actuated in the `customary manner by an electric motor located in the casing I0. A recess I8 is shown as extending transversely acrossV the casing, and portions of the casing IDbetween this recess and the.y shaver head are cut away as indicated at 20 so as to forma channel or groove, for a purpose to be explained hereinafter. This channel is preferably made with its side walls 22 diverging toward the shaver head. A cover 24 for the recess I8, whichmay be contoured to merge with the general outline of the casing, is shown as positioned over the recess I8, so that the only outlet from the' recess is by way of the channel 20. V
Positioned on one side of each end of the recess I8 is shown a resilient electrically conducting plate 26, which is mountedin the wall of the cas.: ing wand is connected to an electrical terminal 28 on the interior of the casing.
Held in place within the recess by the clips 26 'is shown an incandescent bulb L'having a glass encasement 30 enclosing a longitudinally extending incandescent lament 32 and having a ferrule 34 at each end thereof. The ferrules 34 are of electrically conducting material and each is connected to one end of the lament 32. It will he It will be observed that the cover 24, besides' preventing the loss of light in a lateral direction, serves to protect the bulb L.
By referring to Figure 1 it will .be observed that the light proceeding directly from the filament 32 to the surface to be shaved, which is designated by the latter A, will be bounded in a plane transverse to the shaver head by the lines 32-38 and 32-40,and this direct light is augmented by light reflected from the reflecting coating 36, so that altogether the bundle of light rays emerging through the channelis bounded bythe lines 32-42 and 32-44. It will be observed that the illuminated area is positioned immediately in fro'nt of the shaving head I2 and its width isonly suiilcient to illuminate the desired area. To secure illumination adjoining the shaver head I2, thecasling Ill is cut away so as to deepen the channel'20 the required amount. Substantially all of the light emitted by the incandescent bulb is concentrated in this area and distributed thereover.
In a'lngitudinal plane relatively to the shaver head, the bundle of emitted rays may be roughly stated to be limited by the lines 6e-I8 and 50-52. I
Itwill be observed'that the incandescent bulb L is located Within the normal contours of a conventional dry shaver, whereby no excrescences are formed on the shaver casing that would interfere, as the shaver looks into the mirror while shaving, with his view of the of the area to be shaved. v
In the embodiment shown in Figures A3 and 4 the casing ofthe dry shaver is indicated at 60 andthe shaver head at 62. 'I'he latter is of a type 'differing from that shown in Figures 1 and 2, having an oscillating cutting member, and at 64 is indicated in dot and dash lines mechanism for causing the oscillating movement of said movable cutting member. y
However, while the somewhat different disposition of parts necessitates some difference in the internal contours of the casing, the outer contours are substantially the same, and in particular, the recess for receiving-the light-source andl the channel for directing the light thereof are contoured so as to distribute the light over a restricted area in advance of the shaver head.
The incandescent `bulb shown in this embodiment is of the same type as that shown in Figures l and 2, 'and for that reason these parts have been denoted by the same reference numerals primed, and a'detailed description thereof is unnecessary. `llhis bulb, L', is located in a transversely disposed recess 66 within each end of whichis positioned an electrical contacting plate 68 connected to a terminal N within the casing adapted for connection to a source of current. -At the side of the recess opposed to each of said plates 68 isra spring clip 12 adapted to perreflection therein channel 20 of the first embodiment, and is formed by cutting away portions of the casing 60, so that the zone of illumination will have the desired`A position in relation to the shaver head and the desired spread.
A third embodiment of my invention is shown in Figures 5 and`6. The shaver casing and the incandescent bulb being substantially the same as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the same numerals,v
double primed, have been used to indicate them and detailed description thereof will be omitted as unnecessary. rIhe bulb L" in this embodiment is shown as supported by a spring clip 92 of semi-cylindrical contour that is connected by an extension passing laterally through the wall of the casing I0, as shown in Figure 5, to a terminal 94 positioned within the casing I0.
It will be seen -on referring to Figure y6 that thev clip 92 is shown as slotted, as at 96 whereby its ferrule engaging portionv is rendered less stiff and therefore more readily manipulable when the bulb is to be inserted or removed.
It will be observed thatno cover for the recess I8" is shown in the drawing. It is to be understood that if desired, a`\cover might be used in this form as in the others. However it may be found that under certain conditions thecover may be dispensed with as regards protection, while the light emission may besuflicientiy controlled by suitable distribution of the reecting coating 36".
It will be observed the tubular form of iny candescent bulb disclosed herein `ris peculiarly adapted to the purposes of my invention. Its mounting, by resilient clips engaging fer# rules on the lamp, enables ready insertion and removal of the bulb in a very restrictedspace and the clips also act as shock absorbers tending to cushionl the bulb and to protect it against damage. In these respects it is far superior to the ordinary screw and bayonet type'base bulbs:`
While the bulb has been described as of the incandescent lament type, it will be obvious that other types of illuminants may be found equally desirable or even more desirable. vAs an example I may mention luminous gaseous discharge tubes, such as the neon light, which are also of tubular form and in which the light radiations are distributed along the tube. Light sources of this type would add another element of ruggedness to the lighting arrangement.
While I have herein disclosed several illustrative embodiments of my invention it will be understood that the same may be embodied in many other forms without departing from the spiritr thereof, as will be obvious to those skilled in the art, and that the disclosure herein is by way of illustration merely and is not to be interpreted in a limiting sense, and that I do not limit myselfv other than as called for by the prior-art.
Having thus described my invention and-illustrated its use, what I claim as new and -desire to.
