Description

Nov. 4, 1941. E. FISCHER METHOD OF MANUFACTURING STOCKINGS Filed Oct. 27, 1938 0 INVENT OR. 'U6/61" ATTORNEY.
` ioned knitting machine.
Pennies Nov. 4, 1941v NETHOD F MANUFAC G STOGS e claims. (cl. s6-s2) My invention relates to the process of producing knitted stockings on flat knitting machines, andrefers particularly to methods in which'the stocking is knitted from the foot portion to the leg portion. Y j
According to my process, the stocking may be knitted by commencing at the foot and at the same time knitting the heel portions on each side of the foot portion. The heel tabs may be started directly with the to'e portion, or at any convenient time thereafter, as\ long as the vheel tabs have the desired length when it is time to transfer them with the narrowing machine to their respective knitting needles in order to give a continuous knitting with the high heel.` IfA the heel tabs are finished before the foot portion is knitted up to the instep portion, the narrowing combs will take the heel tabs oi the knitting needles and 4hold them until the knitting` has proceeded up to the `instep portion and then the heel tabs are transferred to the knitting needles in order` to give a continuousknitting with the high heel. l
knitting stockings accorda-f The advantages of ing to my invention are as follows:
n In knitting the hee1 tabs on each' skif'nfv foot portion while the foot of time, for it isnot necessary'm machine for justA producing the'l'il'ztabsl'jfurther, the jointure of the high heel and heji'fdoes not require a manual power and gives aperfect operate sole portion I4,
connection between the two, further, a so-called French. heel is produced without interrupting' the knitting in the instep portion, and further, my process can be followed out on a fullfash- In the accompanying drawing illustrating the several steps incident to the following of my' process similar parts are designated by similar numerals.
Figure 1 isa diagrammatic illustration of a stocking blank and heel tabs particularly adapted for the following of my process when the knitting operations are commenced at the toe portion of the stocking.
Figure 2 isa diagrammatic illustration of a ed for the following of my process when the knitting operations are commenced at the heel tabs and to portions of the stocking.
Figure 3 illustrates a stocking produced by my process after the seaming and looping operations. j
The following is a general description of the method of my invention in which knitting com- 4stocking blank and heel tabs particularly adaptmences at the toe and heel portions as illustrated in Figure 2. The heel tabs will be knitted on each side of the toe. This will not interfere with be used in each heel. This is very helpful in pro- `ducing a good selvage in the widening'of the heel tabs.
After the toe and the heel tabs are finished, the heel tabs will be transferred to the narrowing combs and kept there until the knitting has proceeded up to the instep, then a loose course I2 in each sole'is knitted, followed by two or three or more ravel-courses, the heel tabs are then transferred to theirspecic knitting needles in order to give a continuous knitting with the high :'The heel tabs can be knitted at any convenient time after the toe has been started as long as they have the desired length before arriving at the highheel I3. i
,In knitting the heel tabs on each side of the as shownA in Figure 1, and then having the desired length at the beginning of the high heel, it is only necessary to transfer them to their] specific knitting needles in order to continue knitting, with the high heel. This is accomplished without having kept the heel tabs for any length of time on the'narrowing combs, as is necessary if the heel tabs R-have the desired lengthand'knltting has notfyet pro-- ceeded up to the instep. After the high heel isi knitted, the leg portion I5 is knitted.
The stocking can be finished in any desirable transferred to the narrowing combs and when the proper time arrives are transferred to the specific knitting needles, 'thus allowing( aA continuous knitting with thehigh heel-portion; and that my process thus presents a rapid, simple and economic method for the knitting of stockings. A
My invention is not limiteeLto the specific de- 1. A method of knitting stockings upon a' 8 full-fashioned knitting machine which comprises simultaneously knitting the toe portion and heel tabs at each side thereof, transferring said heel' tabs to narrowing combs, continuing knitting foot portion to instep. transferring said 10 heel tabs to knitting needles, adapted for knitting the high heel portion, continuing knitting said high heel portion and knitting the ieg portion.
