(Cl. 66-187) The present invention relates to a method o f making stockings on flat knitting machines according to which method the heelparts are formed simultaneously with the middle part of 5 the foot connecting them and an oblique narrowing line is formed in the heel part proper.

According to known methods of manufacture of this kind of stockings as described for instance in my U. S. application Serial Number 488,165, the enlargement of the heel part starts, after finishing the leg part, with a number of loops increased to a fabric width corresponding. to the length of the heel. This starting course of loops was narrowed or a number of loops was cast-on or -a number of Wale` loops adapted to Vbe sewed in was formed by widening or the like. 'I'he heel was then flnished by transferring in various ways with or without selvage loops or by narrowing methods of any kind. l

A condition necessary for all these known methods is that after finishing the leg part knitting is continued with loops, the number of which is increased correspondingly to the length ofthe heel. To do this, it is, however, necessary to formv a special starting course for this enlarged 'course which again requires special devices, drawing of! or selecting attachments, special narrowing flnger Arods or the like.-

The object of the present invention is to eliminate these special devices. To obtain the desired purpose the method according to the invention is thereby characterized that in the region of the high heel an enlargement is knitted by adding widened selvage loops, by casting-on loops or the like, which enlargement may be separated from the leg part or may be connected to said part in the ilrst row or throughout. In this manner, the above mentioned separate starting course is avoided and yet the enlarged row of loops necessary for narrowing the heel is formed, which subsequently serves as looping course.

In this manner now, any shape of heel obtained by starting with` an enlarged row of loops to be subsequently narrowed may be made, without starting afresh at the enlarged part. 'I'he enlarged part in front of the enlarged row of loops is subsequently looped off so that theflnished stocking has the same appearance as a stocking 50 the heel part of which was formed by narrowing a starting course which was enlarged at the outset.

In the drawings affixed to this specification and forming part thereof, fabrics embodying my l'nwidening of the selvage loops is continued. The

vention, and heel portions of stockings formedfrom such fabrics, are illustrateddiagrammatically by way of example.

Fig. l shows, on a larger scale, the loops at the right of a heel portion in which selvage loops are .formed at the sides of the flaps by widening and 'formed from the fabric illustrated in Fig. 2. Referring now to the drawings and first to Figs. 1I and 4, the leg has been finished as far as the course h-h at the beginning of the high heel, and b--b is the rst course of the usual widened heel parts.' The widening of selvage loops is begun in the course h-h at the beginning of thehigh heel. The widened selvage loops are knitted from a separate thread and from the course h-,h to the course a-a the newly formed wales are not connected to the central foot part. The course a-a is formed as a transferred row with longer loops. From line a-.a to line b-b widened portion of the fabric is, however, connected to the leg part from line a-g, so that the disconnection of the fabric parts terminates at wthe point a.

The line h-h lies at the beginning of the high heel, while the heel proper begins at the line b-b. The -widened parts of the fabric now have a width corresponding to the length of the heel.

From course b--b to course c-c a number of rows of loops without the selvage loops is transferred in the usual manner, i. e., without narrowing, in the heel parts at both sidesI of the fabric and the fabric is narrowed from course c'-c to course d-d whereupon instep narrowing begins in the usual manner. The narrowing line which is obtained by knitting in the manner described, is shown at B-C-D in Fig. 4, the porstocking.

After looping off the. enlarged part in front Vof the enlarged row of loops the finished stocking is quite similar to a stocking the heel part of which was formed by narrowing a starting course which was enlarged'at the outset.

Referring now to Figs. 2 and 5, the operations are performed as described, with the exception that in this case the first widened course is connected to the leg andthe courses from b-b to c-c are plain rows of loops instead of transferring some rows without the selvage loops, i. e., without narrowing. 'I'he operation is thn continued in the manner described with reference to Fig. l from course c-c. The stocking which is formed from this fabric isv without the portion B-C of the narrowing line which is on a wale, i. e. the narrowing line extends only from 'course c-c to course d-d and is at an angle to the wales throughout.

Referring now to Fig. 3, the enlarged parts may also be formed by casting-on loops at opposite sides of the central foot part and in this case also these parts are separated from course h-h to course aa, as shown at a'. From line -a-a to line b-b the enlarged parts are connected to the leg part. The stocking illustrated in Fig. 4 with the narrowing line B-C-D is also formed from this'fabric. The subsequent operations may be performed on the fabric in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1 or in Fig. 2.

Various changes may be made in the details disclosed in the foregoing specification without departing from the invention or sacrificing the advantages thereof.

In the claims aixed to this specification no selection of any particular modification of the invention is intended to the exclusion of other modifications thereof and the right to subsequently make claim to any modification not covered by these claims is expressly reserved.

I claim:-

1. The method of making stockings on a at knitting machine according to which the heel parts are formed simultaneously with the middle part of the foot connecting them, consisting of forming an enlargement in the region of the high heel for obtaining enlarged rows of loops necessary for the heel formation by widening of rows of loops separated from the rows of loops of the leg part, widening a few rows of loops for obtaining the heel rounding, knitting a few plain rows of loops and subsequently narrowing.

2. The method of making stockings on a fiat knitting machine according to which the heel parts are formed simultaneously with the middle part of the foot connecting them, consisting of forming an enlargement in the region of the high heel for obtaining enlarged rows of loops necessary for the heel formation by widening of rows of loops separated from the rows of loops of the leg part, knitting several rows of loops in which narrowing is effected without transferring the selvage loops and subsequently narrowing with transfer of the selvage loops.

3. 'Ihe method of making stockings on a flat knitting machine according to which the heel parts are formed simultaneously with the middle part of the foot connecting them, consisting of forming an enlargement in the region of the high heel, for obtaining enlarged rows of loops necessary for the heel formation by casting on loops separated from the loops of `the leg part, widening a few rows of loops for obtaining the heel rounding, knitting a few plainrows of loops and subsequently narrowing.

4. The method of making stockings on a flat knitting machine according to which thel heel parts are formed simultaneouslywith the middle part of the foot connecting them, consisting of forming an enlargement in the region of the high heel for obtaining enlarged rows of loops necessary for the heel formation by casting on loops separated from the loops of the leg part, widening a few rows of loops for obtaining the heel rounding, knitting several rows of loops in which narrowing is effected without transferring the selvage loops and subsequently narrowing with transfer of the selvage loops.
