My invention relates to buffing wheels and par-'- ticularlyto bufiingwheels of the so-called "hard type.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel form of a hard buffing wheel comprising aminimum number of integral parts.
Another'object of my invention is to provide a new and improved form of bufiing wheel section comprising a plurality of cloth disks having simple means for supporting and driving" the same.-
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel form of a section for a hard bufling wheel adapted to be supported and driven by means causing no compression of the operative area of the section.
Other objects of my invention will either be apparent from a description of one form of section and supporting and driving means therefor embodying my invention or will be pointed out in the'course of such description and set forth in the appended claims.

My improved buffing wheel includes at least one section comprising a plurality or annular disks of cloth, all disks having the same outer diameter but certain disks having a given inner.

t Fig. 2 ofthe drawings, I have there shown'a plurality of such sets of flexible disks, all having'the same outer diameter. A predetermined number of disksor plies ll of substantially annular shape have a given inner diameter. Each set includes a plurality of disks l3 of the same material as the disks II and of the same external diameter but of a lesser inner diameter. For illustrative purposes I may mention that I may employ from 8 to 12 disks of flexible cloth in each of the two sets I I and I3 although it is to be understood that this is mentioned merely to give an idea of the approximate axial thickness of the two sets of plies or disks of cloth.
I prefer to use a plurality of circular or spiral seams l 5:'to'-sew"to'gether the cloth disks'in the two sets of each section, as will benoted fron'r 2 or thedrawings.
The disks of lesserintern'al diameter are provided with a plurality of relatively Wide openings or apertures 'l 1- these" aperturesbeing' usually. uniformly peripherally spaced around the area of the disks l3' just outsi'de-of theinner periphery thereof. A buffing wheelof'this kind is; of course, usually supported on a driving shaft 25 and I may 10- cate washers 21 between each adjacent pair of driving members 21, the axial thickness of the washers 21 being just suflicient to ensure that the respective sections of cloth disks shall be positioned closely adjacent to and in engagement with each other. While I have shown only two supporting members 2| in Fig. 2 of the drawings, I desire it to be understood that I may assemble a buffing wheel of any desired axial length by the use of any desired number of supporting and driving means 2|, each having hook or return-bent portions interengaging with apertures in a part only of the cloth disks driven by the respective driving members.
I have found that a bufiing wheel of this kind in which careful attention has been given to the number of seams in the sections is an effective bufiing wheel of the so-called hard type, particularly useful on soft materials such as aluminum. Iv desire to point out that by the selection of the thickness of the spacing washers 21 in cooperation with the number of disks in each of the sets and sections, my invention provides a hard. buifing wheel in which no compressive stress isv applied to that portion of the disks'which are used for actual bufling operation, which has so often been the case in structures ofthis kind in which annular disks of cloth were clamped between metal fianges extending outwardly beyond the inner diameter of the disks and interengaged therewith as by axially extending bolts passing through the flanges and through the cloth disks adjacent to and outside of the inner periphery of the latter.
Various modifications may be made in the device embodying my invention as herein shown and described and all such modifications clearly coming within the scope of the appended claims are to be considered as being covered thereby.
I claim as my invention:
1. A hard bufling wheel having a section comprising a plurality of annular disks of cloth all having the same outer diameter, certain of said disks having a lesser inner diameter than the other disks, seams holding all of said disks close together and extending to the larger inner diameter, seams holding together all of the disks of lesser inner diameter adjacent to said lesser inner diameter and a plurality of peripherally spaced openings in said disks of lesser inner diameter within the inner diameter of the other disks adapted to receive a supporting and driving means.
2. A hard bufiing wheel comprising a first set of circular cloth disks of a given outer diameter and a given inner diameter, a second set of circular cloth disks of the same outer diameter as the first set and of a smaller inner diameter than the first set, a plurality of seams securing both sets together over substantially the entire area of said first set, a seam securing together said second set adjacent to their inner periphery, and a plurality of peripherally spaced openings in said second set of disks adjacent to their inner diameter and within the inner periphery of said first set of disks for receiving a supporting and driving means.
3. A hard bufiing wheel having a section comprising a first set of circular fabric disks of a given outer diameter and a given inner diameter, a second set of circular fabric disks of the same outer diameter and of a smaller inner diameter, a plurality of seams distributed substantially uniformly of the area of the disks of said first set to hold both sets tightly together, a second pair of like sets of fabric disks in back-to-back position relatively to said first pair, and a plurality of openings in each of the second set of disks of each pair for receiving a supporting and driving means.
4. A hard bufiing wheel having a section comprising a first set of circular fabric disks of a given outer diameter and a given inner diameter, a second set of circular fabric disks of the same outer diameter and of :a smaller inner diameter, a plurality of seams distributed substantially uniformly of the area of the disks of said first set to hold both sets tightly together, a second pair of like sets of fabric disks in back-to-back position relatively to said first pair, a plurality of peripherally spaced apertures in each of said second sets of disks adjacent to the inner periphery of said second set and inside of the inner periphery of said first set and a holding and driving means for said body interengaged with said apertures and free of compression stresses on said fabric disks.
5. A hard bufiing Wheel having a section comprising a first set of circular fabric disks of a given outer diameter and a given inner diameter, a second set of circular fabric disks of the same outer diameter and of a smaller inner diameter, a plurality of seams distributed substantially uniformly of the area of the disks of said first set to hold both sets tightly together, a second pair of like sets of fabric disks in back-to-back position relatively to said first pair, a plurality of peripherally spaced apertures in each of said second sets of disks adjacent to the inner periphery of said second set and inside of the inner periphery of said first set an a holding and driving means for said body comprising a disk having a plurality of hook portions at its outer periphery of said disk and bent flat-Wise into hook shape, alternate hooks interengaging with the apertures in said sets of smaller inner diameter to hold and drive the same free of compressive stress on said fabric disks.
6. A hard bufiing wheel comprising a plurality of sections each including a first set of adjacent imperforate circular fabric disks of a given outer diameter and of a given inner diameter, a second set of adjacent circular fabric disks of the same outer diameter and of smaller inner diameter, a plurality of seams extending through the disks of both sets over the area of the disks of larger inner diameter to hold the fabric disks of both sets tightly together, a plurality of openings in said second sets of disks of smaller inner diameter adjacent to their inner diameter and inside of the inner periphery of said first set of fabric disks, at least one seam in each second set of disks between said openings and the inner diameter of said disks, a driving and supporting disk having a plurality of return-bent hook portions at its outer periphery, alternate hook portions being bent toward opposite sides of said driving disk and interengaged with the openings in two sections.
