and apparatus for hammering designs on metal against a die, but more specifically to a method and apparatus for running an automatically operated hammer over areas of a plate exposed through a template, the opposite sides of said exposed. areas abutting a die.
Heretofore in the manufacture and production of hand-hammered trays, and other metal-ware,
one method of producing designs thereon included the hammering by hand of an area of one side of the plate, the opposite side contacting a die with a design engraved thereon. In this process, the operator Wielding the hammer was compelled to repeat hammer strokes over the plate area above the die containing the engraved and skill of the operator in wielding his hammer.
The present invention, therefore, has as its .main object the production of designs from a die by means of an automatically driven hammer manually guided over openings in a template securing the metal to be designed over the die.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision ofv a method and apparatus for manufacturing plateware having hammered designs thereon wherein speed of production is accelerated and labor costs are reduced.
These objects and other incidental ends and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear in the progress of the disclosure and as pointed out in the appended claims.
Accompanying this specification are drawings showing a preferred form of the invention wherein corresponding reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing securing means for fixing a plate between an orificed template and an engraved die, the orifices of the template affording operating areas over which an automatically operated hammer is normally guided.
Figure 2 is a front view in elevation of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary end View in elevation showing locking means of the plate to be designed between the template and the die.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of Figure 1 along ,This invention relates generally to a method the plane 4- 4 thereof showing also an automatically driven hammer within an orifice of the template.
Figure 5 is an 'end View in elevationof a plate adapted to be secured within the apparatus and operated upon by the process described herein.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 showing a design ,impressedon the undersurface of the plate by means of the process and apparatus hereinafter to be described.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, a metal bed In is preferred to serve as a nonvibrating base for. a template frame generally designated by numeral II, the 'said frame being secured to a template seat generally designated by numeral l3- by means of a pair of hinges I2. Seat-l3 consists of a conventional framework having horizontal and transverse members, each of the horizontal members being design'atedby numeral 1 4, while each of the transverse members are designated by numeral IS, the said seat l3 being secured to bed It] by means of bolts l1 penetratingl'ugs I 6 extending from the horizontal members l4.
Fixed within the template seat framework is a die having anydesired upper engraved areas t9, the saidareas being contacted by a surface of a plate 20 adapted to have a design hammered thereon. The upper exposed surface of plate 2i] is indicated by numeral 2! and the surface contacting. die I8 is indicated by numeral 22. In order to center plate 20 over die 18, a pair of stops 23 and'24 are provided and are secured to members. I5 and M of. thetemplate seat framework. j 1
The template frame I l hinged to template seat I3 is comprised of a framework having horizontal and transverse members, each of the horizontal members being designated by numeral 25 and each of the transverse members being designated by numeral 26. As shown, members 25 and 26 are narrower than the template seat members l4 and I 5 within which latter the die plate I8 is nested. A pair of handles to raise and lock the template framework to the seat are provided and consist of levers 21 secured at the ends of the front horizontal member 25 at the upper surface thereof by means of pivots 28. Levers 27 project forwardly from member 25 and are provided with handles 30, each of the said levers at the projecting portions having a depending U member 3| adapted to engage a lug 29 situated at each end of horizontal member M at the front face thereof, the said lugs 29 being tapered at 32 to permit easy engagement by U members 3|.

Spaced from the inner walls of the template frame members 25 and 26 is a template 33 adapted to contact die [8 and between which plate 20 is adapted to be secured. A plurality of spaced and parallel bars 34 secured to members 25 and the upper surface of the template 33 by means of screws 35 serve to connect the template 33 to the template framework. To avoid scratching of the surface of plate 20 by the undersurface of template 33, a lining 36 is secured to the underside of the template, the latter itself being provided with openings 31 and 38 to conform in shape with the engraved areas IQ of die [8.
Openings 3? and 38 of template 33 afford an area in which a motor or pneumatically driven hammer generally designated by numeral 39 is adapted to be manually guided over the exposed portion of plate through said openings whereby impressions are made on the opposite side of The hammer is comprised 'of the usual parts such as a round headed reciprocating plunger 40 having a guide M, a motor 42 and handles 43. To aid the operator, the hammer may be suspended or counterbalanced from the ceiling so that in wielding the same, the operator is not subjected to the full weight thereof and is in a position to easily. transverse the exposed area 'of plate centering of plate 20 'over'die l8, the template 33 .and its framework are lowered on hinges l2 and secured to the template seat bydrawing handles 30 toward each other. .Thereafter, the operator wield-s the automatically driven hammer 39 within openings 31 and 38 of template 33 whereby a plurality of hammer strokes are equally distributed within the borders of openings 31 and 38 of template 33 thereby impressing designs on the undersurface of plate 20 adjacent die l8 without affecting 'the surface off plate 20 adjacent the exposed areas.' .When this procedure has been completed, the template frame is raised from the template seat by unlocking handles 30 and the engraved plate 20 removed.
It is to be observed that the process above de scribed is applicable to any shape of plateware and that die l8, the template frame and seat may all be correspondingly changed in shape and design to meet desired demands.
I wish it understood that minor changes and variations in the material, integration of parts, shape and size thereof, may all be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims and that minor variations in the steps of the process hereinbefore described, may also be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
. I claim:
1. Apparatus for manufacturing hammered designs on metalware against a die, including a non-vibrating horizontal bed, a framework supported thereon and having a die mounted centrally thereof, a second framework pivotally secured to the first mentioned framework and carrying a central and orificed template, saiddie having engraved designs opposite the template openings, releasable closure means between the two frameworks, guiding means associated with the first mentioned framework to secure a piece of metalware centrally over thedie whereby upon closure of the second framework the said piece of metalware on the undersurface abuts the die and on the upper surface abuts the template.
2. Apparatus for manufacturing hammered designs on metalware against a die including a nonvibrating horizontal bed, a framework supported thereon and having a die mounted, centrally thereof, a second framework pivotally secured to the first mentioned framework and carrying a central and orificed template, the said die having engraved designs opposite the template openings, means pivoted to the second framework and releasably engageable with the first framework to look a piece of metalware between the template and the die.
3. An apparatus for manufacturing hammered designs on metalware between a template and die by means of a pneumatically driven tool, in cluding a non-vibrating horizontal bed, a framework supported thereon and having a die mounted centrally thereof, a second framework pivotally secured to the first mentioned framework and carrying an orificed template through which the tool is adapted to operate, the said die having engraved designs opposite the template openings, releasable locking means between the frameworks to secure a piece of metalware between the template and the die.
