UNHTED STATES PATENT OFFICE BACK COVERING FOR VEHICLE SEATS Maria Angela Alvarez de Gonzalez Pagliere, Buenos Aires, Argentina 2 Claims.
This invention relates to certain improvements in back coverings for the seats of motor cars and other vehicles in general, and a. substantial object of the same is to provide such cover with means for preventing the vibration and shaking caused therein by the motion of the car or the like, from being transmitted to the body of the person who is resting on the same.
An essential feature of the invention consists in permanently aiiixing to the back of the seat a sheet of material having a smooth or slippery surface, on Which latter a second sheet of similar material which may constitute the upholstery proper, or which may have applied to its outer surface a suitable upholstering material, may freely slide or slip in any direction.
It will be evident that by means of this arrangement, the vertical and horizontal movements caused in the seat back, will not be conveyed to the sliding sheet which serves as a direct or indirect support for the back of the passenger, who by inertia will remain stationary and will thereby cause the movable sheet or covering to slide or slip on the stationary sheet or covering.
While the invention may be carried out in a great variety of ways, a preferred embodiment of the same has been shown in the drawing annexed to this specification, in which:
Figure 1 shows a vertical cross section of a seat back provided with the improvements in accordance with this invention, suitable for use in connection with the back of any type of vehicle seat.
Figure 2 is a similar view of. a seat back furnished with said improvement, and
Figure 3 shows a front elevation, with parts removed, of a seat provided with the improved back which forms the object of this invention.
Similar numbers of reference have been used to indicate like or corresponding parts in all the views.
The improvement in accordance with the invention comprises a sheet or lining l, of suitable material, such as leather, provided with a smooth outer surface and conveniently alfixed by upholstery pins, their equivalent or by stitching at its entire periphery to the surface of the back 2. A strip of resilient material 3 has one edge thereof stitched, pinned or otherwise secured to the top and sides of the back 2, and the other or lower edge of said strip has secured thereto, by stitching or the,1ike, a facing sheet 4 of fabric or the like which constitutes the upholstery proper. The lower edge of the sheet 4 preferably remains loose.
The said sheet or covering 4 may be provided, according to the nature of the material forming the same, with a smooth or slippery inner surface, or have stitched or otherwise secured to its inner face an insert in the form of a third sheet 5 of leather or the like, of which the side to come into contact with the smooth face of the stationary sheet I, is also of a smooth or slippery condition.
If desired, at the lower part of the stationary sheet, a finishing flap 6 may be secured, of the same fabric material as used for the upholstery, in order that the seat may offer an unbroken appearance.
The device in accordance with this invention may be used either by forming the same fixed on the frame of the back, or as an independent cover element, adapted to be applied or afiixed to any existing seat back, in which latter case it will be provided with any suitable means, not shown in the drawing, for fastening the same in position.
Since the sheet or covering 4 has its lower edge loose, it may be raised and a suitable lubricating material, such as talcum, oil or the like, introduced between the faces of sheets 5 and I to slide or slip in contact with each other, so as to enhance the slippery condition of the movable sheet or covering.
As has already been stated before, it will be evident that the invention is not to be restricted to the embodiment shown and described, but that many changes of arrangement and detail may be introduced within the scope of the claims hereunto annexed.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A covering for the back of the seats of automotive vehicles and the like, comprising, a stationary sheet having a slippery surface adapted to be mounted on the back of the seat and a facing sheet of non-slippery material, an insert sheet carried by the rear of the facing sheet and having a relatively slippery surface contacting the slippery surface of the stationary sheet, and means for resiliently connecting the facing sheet to the stationary sheet to permit relative movement therebetween.
2. A covering for the back of the seats of automotive vehicles and the like, comprising, a stationary sheet of leather, a facing sheet of fabric material, an insert of leather carried and :tionary sheet and adapted to be overlapped by the lower edge of said facing sheet to provide an unbroken upholstery fabric appearance to the rear of the seat when the covering is applied 5 thereto.
