UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD T. POLLABD, OF LYNOHBURG, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTH OF HIS RIGHT TO HARRISON W. HOLLY, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR MAKING PLUG-TOBACCO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,865, dated March 23, 188C.
Application filed November 10, 1879.
'means for keeping clean the surface of the large roll over which the tobacco is carried and the inner face of the belt, all as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of the machine. Fig.2 is aside elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on line as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section of the flanged wheel that carries the belt.' Fig. 5 is a detail view, showing the cutter.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The operative parts of the machine are mounted upon a suitable bed or stand, A, at one side of which is fitted the feeding-table a, and across which is fitted the driving-shaft b, that may be operated by hand or other power. At one end of frame A, and having bearings in the fixed semicircular side plate, 0, is a crossshaft, 61, that carries the flanged wheel or roller B. The wheel B is formed with a peripheral gear meshing with a gear'wheel on the shaft b, and is made with a smooth surface, and with one flange, 6, adjustable, to vary the distance between it and the fixed flange, the said adjustable flange consisting of a ring applied around the wheel and held by screws, keys, or other suitable devices.
Outside of the roller B, and having bearings in the side plate, 0, are four or more pressure-rollers, f, which enter between the flanges of roller B. The journals of the rollers f are fitted in slots in plates a radial to the axis of B, and are held down by set-screws g fitted in plates 0, whereby the space between rollers f and B may be regulated.
Upon the end of the frame A opposite to roller B a roller, h, is journaled. This roller h is of the same diameter as B, and is held in and wet or oiled.
sliding boxes adjustable by set-screws k, whereby the distance between the two rollers may be adjusted to regulate the tension of the belt. Around the rollers B it passes an endless belt, I, which is preferably a thin and flexible ribbon of steel, and is of a width to pass snugly between the flanges of the roller B. From one side of plate 0 depends a spring-arm, m, on the lower end of which is pivoted the scraper and oil and water box a, with its open side against the surface of roller B. The arm at should be fitted adjustably, so that the pressure of the box a against the roller may be varied, and the box it is connected to the arm by the pivot-pinn, projecting from the bottom of 6 the box through the arm, whereby the box may be removed for cleaning without the necessity of loosening screw or bolts. The box it serves to keep the surface of roller B clean A box, 0, of the same kind is fitted on an arm, 0, from the frame of the machine, to bear beneath the belt I for a similar purpose.
In the side plates, 0, above the feed-bed a, is fitted a cross-shaft, q, carrying cone-pulleys g, which are connected by a belt to the conepulleys g on the driving-shaft I). Between the side arms the shaft q is fitted with eccentrics r and rods r, that connect with the shearplate 8, which is fitted in horizontal slots in side plates, 0, whereby the revolution of shaft q reoiprocates the plate 8 to and from roller B. The rods r carry the cutting-blade t, which has guides t extending in front of plate 8, and by the swing of the eccentric-rods the cutter t is given a vertical movement to and from the plate 8, and at the same time the cutter t reciprocates with the plate 8. The parts are arranged so that the knife finishes its descent while the parts are moving away from the roller B, whereby the knife will cut and at the same time move forward with the tobacco which passes upon plate 8 from roller 13, as hereinafter described.
The belt l, at its lower side, passes through a trough in the feed-bed a, so that the belt is supported and the trough extends beneath the roller B to the lower pressure-roller,f. The tobacco will be fed upon the belt from bed a, and will be carried between the belt and roller B. The rollers f will cause the compression of the tobacco to a continuous strip of uniform size, and the strip will be led off at the top of B to the cutting-plate s by the guide it, which is fixed above the plate .9, and extends between the flanges of roller B. The cutter 25 will cut the strip into plugs of uniform size, and the plugs will drop from the plate 8 upon a delivery-slide of any suitable character. The length of the plugs cut can be varied by shifting the belt on the cone-pulleys q to vary the speed of shaft q.
By adjustment of rollers f the thickness of the pressed plugs can be varied. In some cases rollers of smaller or larger diameter may be substituted to vary the thickness.
The Width of plug is to be regulated by adjustment of the movable ring 0 on roller B, and in changing the width of plug the pressurerollers f and belt Zwill be removed and others 20 of the required Width substituted.
Having thus described my invention,Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In tobacco-pressing machines, the revolv- 2 5 2. In tobacco-pressing machines, the scrapo ers and boxes 12 0, hung upon spring-arms, in contact, respectively, with the roller and belt, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
