Patented Sept. 23, 1941 t me UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 SNOWPLOW v Benjamin Franklin Smith,Lincoln,,Nebr. I Application January 28, 1941, Serial No. 376,401
4 Claims.
This invention relates to manually operated snow plows or snow scraping devices.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character embodying a wide main blade'adapted to be moved over the surface to be cleaned of snow, and a removable side board having means whereby the side board may be secured to either side edge of the main blade, thereby adapting the device for use in scraping wide walks, the side board preventing the snow from being thrown laterally onto a surface already cleaned.
Another object of the invention is to provide a snow plow including a removable handle section having a snow scraping blade which may be readily disconnected from the main blade and used in removing snow from restricted places.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a snow plow or snow scraper constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a bottom view of the scraper.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the scraping blade of the plow, and as shown, the blade is substantially wide, or of a width to extend across the usual walk way.
The blade is curved throughout its length, and is provided with a steel blade 6 at its forward end, the blade 6 being secured to the blade 5, by means of bolts or rivets, extended through the metal straps 1 that are secured to the rear surface of the blade 5, the lower ends of the metal straps 1 being extended beyond the lower front edge of the blade 5 so that the blade 6 may be readily secured thereto. By removing the rivets or bolts securing the blade 6, it is obvious that the blade 6 may be removed and replaced by a sharp blade when the blade becomes dull.
These straps I extend over the rear surface of the main blade 5, and are disposed adjacent to the side edges thereof, the straps being formed with rearwardly extended portions 8 providing arms, the arms having bearings 9 at their ,ends, in which the axle H] is mounted, the axle l0 providing a mount for the wheels II which have roughened surfaces to prevent the wheels from slipping. Thusit will be seen that due to this construction, the main scraping blade may be adjusted with respect to the surface over which the plow or scraper is moving, by merely tilting the blade on the wheels.
Secured to the rear surface of the main blade is a clamp l2 which is so constructed that the blade l3 of the removable scraper, may be positioned therein, the blade l3 being provided with a handle I4 that extends upwardly therefrom, so that the device may be operated or pushed through the snow by the handle.
An apertured lug I5 is secured to the handle l4, and is adapted to extend into the notch l6, formed in the plate ill, that is secured to the main blade 5, the plate being provided with tubular ends, to receive the bolt l8 that extends through the apertured lug and tubular portions of the plate l1, securing the handle against lateral movement with respect to the main blade 5.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when it is desired to use the blade B as a shovel or scraper, to remove snow or ice in restricted places, the bolt [8 may be removed, whereupon the handle, together with the blade [3 may be slid from the clamp l2.
A hand grip of the handle l4, and which is indicated by the reference character I9, is provided with openings so that the rod 20 may be extended therethrough and both hands of the operator, used in pushing the device.
The reference character 2| designates the side plate of the plow, which is shown as substantially oval in shape, so that it will conform to the curvature of the main blade 5, when it is positioned thereon. Secured to the outer and inner surfaces of the side plat 2|, are straps 22 that have their ends 23 extended inwardly at right angles to the side plate 2|, where the ends of the straps are disposed in spaced relation with respect to each other, so that the straps may be fitted over the side edges of the main blade 5. The ends 23 are formed with openings to receive the bolt 24 that also extends through anopening Disposed at the upper rear end of the main blade 5, are straps 25 that are bent upon themselves to form the loops 26, into which the rear end of the side plate 2| is extended, prior to bolting the ends 23 to the main blade. As shown, the spaced ends of the straps 22 are so arranged that the side plate may be readily and easily removed from one edge of the main blade 5, and positioned adjacent to the opposite edge thereof, thereby converting the blade for use in plowing or scraping snow in such a way that the snowwill be thrown either to the right'or left of the main blade.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a substantially wide snow plow which may be used in plowing snow from narrow walk ways, and that when it is desired to remove the snow and ice in restricted places, as for example around steps or the like, the handle section, together with the blade carried thereby, may be readily used for accomplishing this purpose.
. What is claimed is:
1. A snow plow comprising a main curved wheel-supported blade, a removable handle section, a wide blade secured at the lower end of the handle section, said latter blade adapted to fit against the rear surface of the main blade, the handle extending upwardly beyond the upper edge of the main blade, a side plate, and means for removably securing the side plate to either side edge of the curved main blade.
2. A snow plow comprising a main blade, loop members extending upwardly from the main blade near the rear edge thereof, a removable side plate having a reduced end adapted to fit within a loop securing the rear end of the side plate in position on the main blade, means for securing the forward end of the side plate to the main blade, and. a handle by means of which the snow plow is operated.
3. A snow plow comprising a main wheelsupported blade, a wide clamp secured to the rear surface of the blade, a handle including a wide blade adapted to fit into the clamp securing the forward end of the handle against lateral movement, means for securing the handle adjacent to the upper end of the blade, and said handle havingan opening through which a bar is extended providing a double hand grip.
4. A snow plow comprising a main blade, a reversible side plate extending upwardly from one edge of the main blade, means for removably securing the side plate to the main blade, said means comprising spaced members adapted to extend over the edge of the main blade, said spaced members having openings adapted to align with openings in said main blade, a bolt adapted to extend through the aligning openings, and a handle for operating the plow.
