Description

Sept. 23, 1941. R. F. com-:LAND
lMETHOD OF MAKING INNER SPRING MATTRESSES Filed Feb. 16, 1959 L tr Patented Sept. 23, 1941 UNITED STATES FICE METHOD F MAKING INNER SPRING MATTRESSES 1 Claim.
'Ihis invention relates to an inner spring mattress and method of making the same, and it is a particular object of the invention to provide a mattress of this kind using fluffy or flake cotton such as comes from a gin or renovator instead of employing cotton in the form. of a felt or batting such as now in use.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating certain of the initial steps in my method of making an inner spring mattress;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective illustrating a further step;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken longitudinally through Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 3 and of a Idiagrammatic character illustrating the further step of blowing the cotton fibre within the boxing, a second position of the nozzle being indicated by broken lines;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 illustrating the second step of blowing cotton fibre with the boxing;
Figure 6 is a view in perspective illustrating diagrammatically the step of beating.
In making an inner spring mattress embodying my invention a boxing B is made of conventional dimensions, said boxing of course being of suitable textile fabric such as ticking. In seaming or connecting the side strips I to the top and bottom sheets 2 initially one end strip I is secured along only one marginal portion so that said end of the boxing B will be open to allow for the insertion therein of the inner spring S. This inner spring S is of any preferred fabrication but in all three directions is less than the corresponding interior dimensions of the boxing so that the desired space is allowed within the boxing B and around the spring S to receive the filler F.
Before being applied within the boxing B the spring S is suitably cased within a covering or bag C of burlap or kindred fabric. After the spring S with its covering C has been inserted within the boxing B the partially free end wall is then seamed into place except for a portion substantially at the transverse center of the boxing whereby is provided a relatively long filling opening 3. i
The boxing B with the applied spring S is placed upon a suitable supporting surface with the filling. opening 3 downwardly disposed and the applied spring S resting upon the lower sheet 2 of the boxing or that sheet or face wall in contact with the supporting surface. -After the applied spring S'has been properly centered within the boxing an elongated filling nozzle Il is inserted within the boxing through the iilling opening 3 and caused to extend a slight distance between the top of the applied spring and the top sheet or wall 2. This nozzle 4 is of considerable length and in this operation it serves as a lever to partially depress the co-acting end portion of the applied spring S. The nozzle 4 is carried by the outer end portion of a hose 5 or the like leading from a suitable source of cotton fibre under pressure. The cotton libre is of a fluffy or flake type such as when it leaves a gin or renovator. This cotton fibre is forced into the boxing B, a-s by a conventional blower, until a proper thickness of the cotton fibre has been applied within the Yboxing above the spring S and partially between the sides of the applied spring S and the side members I of the boxing. After this operation, the boxing B with applied spring S is reversed bringing the iling opening 3 uppermost. The nozzle II is then inserted into the boxing through this opening 3 and the loose or fluffy cotton fibre forced into the boxing into the space between the spring S and the now upper sheet or wall 2 of the boxing B `and the now upper space betweenl the side walls or strips I of the boxing and the sides of the spring S.
After the filling has been completed the nozzle II is withdrawn and the opening 3 closed. The opposite at faces of the now led boxing B are beaten with a long pole of a length substantially equal to the length of the complete mattress and the contact of the pole 5 with a wall 2 of the boxing B being lengthwise thereof. This beating is continued until after .the applied filler F of cotton is of uniform thickness. The mattress is then placed on a finishing table to have the edge portions thereof suitably finished and also to have the conventional tufts applied.
I claim:
A method of making a mattress with an inner spring, comprising the steps of forming a box -of woven material with one side wall open, inserting Y 1 a coinpressible spring within the box through said open side with all three dimensions of the spring materially less than the three corresponding dimensions of the box, then closing said wall of the box except for an opening at a marginal portion of the wall and at substantially the transverse center of the box, blowing fluffy cotton fiber l ROBERT F. COPELAND.
