NITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
IRA W. SNYDER, OF VARNA, NEW YORK.
CAKE-GRIDDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,656, dated March 16,1880.
Application filed January 14, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA W. SNYDER, of Varna, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (lake-Griddles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention relates to the class of reversible griddles for baking cakes that require to be turned in order to bake both sides.
It consists in a main griddle or plate of suitable size and form to fit the opening of a stove or range, and provided with an auxiliary griddle corresponding to and covering about onehalf its area, and attached to the main griddle by raised hinges located on a line through its center; also, in interposing between the two a spring to prevent jar and injury.
The object of my invention is to speedily and conveniently turn cakes during the process of baking, and to obviate their tendency to slip or slide toward the center during the process of turning; also, to prevent injury or damage to the device that might result from clashing of the parts.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention. Fig.2 is a section through the line 00 90 of Fig. 1, and shows the auxiliary griddle slightly raised for the purpose of showing the opening in the main griddle.
A is the main griddle, which is provided with a handle, I, and rim or flange h. It is also provided with suitable openings 0 beneath the auxiliary griddle, in order that only the bottom of such parts of the latter as contain the cakes to be baked shall be in direct contact with the fire. By means of the connecting portions between the openings additional strength is imparted to the main" griddle, and the smallest possible space afforded for the escape of smoke when the auxiliary griddle is raised. The auxiliary griddle is composed of the cake-receptacles B, united by a flange or plate, D, to
which the curved hinges connecting it with the main griddle are attached. This flange is preferably made of wrought-iron and riveted to the receptacles B, in order to give it the necessary strength to resist breakage that might result from the jar when it is thrown back to place, but may be cast solid with the cake-re ceptacles, if desirable.
Instead of two or more receptacles, the auxiliary griddle may be made with a single one, and a single opening in the main griddle for its accommodation may be provided. It is also provided with a swinging handle, F, for operating it, and lugs d, which rest upon the main griddle, and preserve a suitable space between the two to permit the cakes to drop and to admit air to them when it occupies a reversed position.
R, Fig. 2, is the bottom of one of the receptacles B of the auxiliary griddle, and fits into the opening 0 of the main griddle when. in position.
0 is a double or looped spring, the ends of which are inserted in the main griddle, and the loop projects beneath the plate D of the auxiliary griddle. This is designed to take up the jar and prevent breakage and damage to the thinner and weaker parts when the auxiliary griddle is thrown back to its place after dumping the cakes.
E E are the hinges, and consist of projections from plate D, curved upward, perforated at their outer ends, and united by a rivet to vertical projections from plate A, also perforated at their outer ends, so that the point of junction or pivot will be above the plane of the griddle or baking-surface.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The batter of which the cakes are baked is deposited in the receptacles B of the auxiliary griddle, and when sufficiently baked on the bottom or under side the auxiliary griddle is raised by means of the handle F and reversed on the opposite side of plate A, where the cakes are deposited with the unbaked side down. In performing this operation the raised hinges E, having the pivot above the plane of the baking-surface, cause the receptacles B, containing the cakes, to describe a more extended curve through the air than though the hinges were otherwise constructed, and the cakes are prevented from sliding toward the center by the increased centrifugal force thus imparted. The auxiliary griddle is then thrown back to its former position, the spring 0 serving to take up and prevent the jar and injury which would otherwise result. This spring is not of sufficient strength to prevent the receptacles, when spread with batter, from fitting closely in their seats in plate A.
I am aware that a hinged cake-griddle for turning cakes during the process of baking has been heretofore used, and I do not claim this, broadly; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cake-griddle, the main plate A, provided with the separate openings 0 on one side of its diameter, in combination with an auxiliary plate covering each separate opening and connected to the main plate by raised hinges located near its center, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a reversible cakegriddle, the raised IRA W. SNYDER.
