STEAM-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 225,651, dated March 16, 1880. Application filed August 1, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL N. SILVER, of Auburn, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented anew and Improved Steam-Engine, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on line Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View on line 3 y of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the cylinder. Fig. 5 is an end view of the port-chamber.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My improvements relate to engines and pumps adapted for use with steam or water, and as stationary, marine, or locomotive en gines, or as steam fire-engines; and the 0bject is to attain an engine of simple and dura- 0 jected to the pressure, and the movement thus given to the toothed wheel is imparted to the cylinder by an intermediate gear, so that a continuous rotary motion is obtained.
I also make use of regulating devices for governing the speed, all of which features will be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings.
A is a bed-plate, upon which, in suitable bearings, the parts of the apparatus are supported. B is the compound cylinder on a shaft, a, that is fitted to revolve freely in fixed bearings. O is the port-chamber, fixed on bed A, through the center of which shaft to passes, and against the open side of which the cylinder B is fitted with a rabbeted joint, that is rendered steam or water tight by an annular packing of rubber or metal. The chamber 0 is divided, by a solid partition, a, into two passages, (see Figs. 2 and 5,) opening against the end of cylinder B, and connected one with the inlet-opening b and the other with the outlet or exhaust c.
The cylinder B is formed with numerous chambers, d, that are arranged in acircle concentric with shaft to and equidistant from each other. Within each chamber (1 is a piston-head or plunger, 0, formed with a groove for leather or metallic packing, and connected bya rod, f, with a wheel or disk, 9, that is fitted to a shaft, h.
The connection of the rodsf to g is made by ball-joints, and the boxes 2' of shaft h are supported on a post, 70, from a plate, l, that is hung, by a pivot, l, on bed A, thus forming a swing-stand, whereby the shaft It may be moved in a horizontal plane to vary its inclination to shaft a.
The shaft h is moved and held by crossshaft m, having a threaded portion that engages with a nut pivoted on the under side of box 1', the outer endof which shaft carries a gear-wheel, n, that is moved by the regulating mechanism, as hereinafter described.
The disk 9 is formed with radial cogs, which engage the projecting teeth of a ring or disk, 0, which is intermediate of the disk gand cylinder B, and connected with the latter.
In operation as a motor the steam or water supplied under pressure by the inlet 1) exerts its force upon the heads 0 of the chambers 01, that are open to the passage above the partition a of port-chamber G. The chambers cl, below the partition a are open to the exhaust 0, while one intermediate chamber at each side is covered by the partition 0.. The power, speed, and length of stroke are dependent on the inclination of the Wheel 9 to the axis of cylinder B, and the pivot l, on which the wheel 9 and shaft 71. swing, being placed directly under the ball-joint of rods f, next to inlet b, each piston commences to move outward by the pressure at that side and continues the movement until the opposite side is reached, when the chamber passes behind the partition a to the exhaust. By this action a continuous rotary motion is given to wheel g, and the pressure is exerted in all the chambers of the cylinder above the partition a, the cylinder B and shaft,a being turned by wheel g.
The automatic regulation of the speed is effected by the devices next described.
At the side of frame A, in suitable bearings, is a shaft, 12, driven by a belt from a pulley, g, on shaft to. r is a wheel fast on shaft 1), and
fitted with centrifugal ballsr, that are on the ends of arms 8, which connect by balljoints with a collar, 3, on shaft 1). Spiral springs fit ted on the supportingrods of balls r oppose the centrifugal action. if t are small bevelgears loose on shaft 2), and meshing with the bevelgear a at opposite sides of its shaft m. These gears t are formed with conical hubs that enter the flaring ends of the sleeve at, which turns with shaft 1), but is capable of endwise movement to clutch either gear 2?. A flanged collar behind each gear tserves to retain the gear in place. a is a rod, fitted to slide in fixed bearings, having a forked arm,

and a second forked arm, 29, that enters an annular groove in the collar .9, whereby the sleeve 10, rod 20, and collar 8 are moved together by the action of the centrifugal balls. The connection of the forked arm 1) with rod u is made by a hub, from which 1) projects and into which the rod to enters. A thumbscrew, 1 permits adjustment of this connection for regulating the position of the sleeve to with reference to the gears t I. These parts being set for the desired speed, when that speed is exceeded the outward movement of the balls causes the sleeve to to clutch one gear, t, thereby turning gear at and screw'shaft m in the direction forlessenin g the inclination of shaft h, which action shortens the stroke of the pistons and reduces the purchase on wheel g, thus reducing the speed. A reduction of speed below the normal point produces a reverse action and effect.
The pivoted plate l, on which the swinging stand of shaft h is supported, is connected by a rod, to, with a yoke, 20, that is fitted to slide on screw-rods d beneath bed A. Around rods d are spiral springs, acting between nuts 0 and yoke 10 so as to exert a springtension on The tension of the springs is regulated by turning the rods 01, thereby moving the nuts 0 to compress or 5 release the springs.
The above construction furnishes a motor adapted for high speed and durable in all its parts. The cylinder 13, shaft h, and its attached parts will be covered by a protectingcase, as shown.
The machine may be built of any size according to the power required, and with small machines the regulator is not required.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a motor or pump, the combination of the reiolving cylinder B, formed with chambers d, the fixed port-chamber 0, having inlet and outlet passages, divided by a solid partition, the toothed wheel or disk 0, connected to cylinder B, the gear-wheel g, meshing with 0 and fitted to revolve in a plane inclined thereto, and the heads or plungers 0, working in the chambers of cylinder B and having their rods.

2. In a motor or pump, the combination, with the wheel 9 and its shaft h, of the boxes 6, post 7c, pivoted plate l, screw-shaft m, and nut, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
