PROJ ECTl LE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,650, dated March 16, 18180.
Application filed September 29, 18749.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H SI-LEY, ot'
Fredericksburg, in the countyofSpottsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Projectiles; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it app'ertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side elevation of myimproved projectile complete ready for tiring. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section 'ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line :t .r of Fig. 2.
The saine letter in'dicates the same part' wherever it occurs .in the several figures.
My invention relates to an improvement iu projectiles designed principally for use in pro .jectiles for artillery 5 and it consists in the combination, with the projectile, of cotton or other fabric that will hold a lubricant7 together with mechanism by which this fabric is pressed into and made to take the rifiings of the bore of the gun and fill the bore ofthe gun, hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, A is the body of my iinproved projectile before firing. B is the hol low socket, open at both ends and made of two equal parts, plane on its exterior and concave on its interior, with a screw-tap at one end to fasten it to the solid shot into the screwtapped'recess at the end ofthe shot.
D is the sabot, and 1)/ the bolt. lheiirstis made with a rim, It, the space between the rim and the bolt being equal to the thickness ot' thesocket 1i.
The outer' border of the rim corresponds in v the outer border a wedge-shaped notch, a, is
vent its coming out-any farther than the point named. This boltis made cap-shaped at its farther end and a very little longer than the socket, so that when it is driven up at the discharge and impinging against the solid shot the metal of which the bolt is made, being malleable iron, will spread into a small space left at the end of the socket, and thus rivet the two together and hold the sabot in its new position during the flight of the projectile.
C is the lubricated wadding, which is made of cotton, hemp, or iiax, or of any suitable fibrous material which willhold a lubricant. This wadding isV prepared in cylinders open tat both ends, the interiorI corresponding -in size to that of the socket, the exterior to the circumference ofthe projectile, thc whole being equal in length to theV space between the projection left 011- the shot after thcsocket is screwed into it and the end of the rim of the sabot when it is adjusted within the sabot.
To adjust the shot for firing, introduce the bolt ot' .the sabot into the two equal parts of the socket B, slip the wadding over the socket, and screw the whole intothe shot.
At'the discharge the sabot D will be driven forward, and the waddin g G will be compressed into tlie bore of the gun and int'o the grooves by the action of the rim.
rlhe bolt-head, by impinging against the solid shot, will clinch and hold the sabot to the shot, the spare material of the wadding will be pressed into the wedge-shaped notch a on the sabot, and the projectile will take a rotary motion in itsilight.
The windage being dest'oyed, the initial vclocityis increased, the trajectory is iiattened, the range and penetration are increased, greater accuracy is attained, and, iinally, insteadet' the bore, and the grooves ol' 'the gun being fouled and obstructed with lodgments, as is the result of the use of most if not all other projectiles, the bore and grooves are smoothed, polished, and lubricated at each discharge. l
Having thus described my projectile, what I claim isl. rllle combination ot' the solid shot A, the hollow socket B, the lubricated \\\adding C, the sabot l), and bolt 1)', all combined and ep- IOO rating subsnanuauy as described, whereby u held rmly in place, and after 'firing is rigidly Io vthe-Waddingis forced into the grooves and into secured in its new position. '4 the bore of the gun by longitudinal pressure. In testimony tha-t I claim the foregoing as l2. The soekebB, provided with a concave my own invention Iafxiny signature in pres- 5`interior, substantially as described, in eom= ence of two witnesses. v binetion with theshotA A and the sabot D, l 1 HENRYl H.
