' UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GRANT, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
PORTABLE SECTIONAL J ETTY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,592, dated March 16, 1880.
Application filed February 10, 1880. r A
To all whom it may concern:
tain new and useful Improvement in Portable Sectional J etties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 2 an end view, thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan or top View, showing the manner in which my present invention is employed as an auxiliary to a dredging apparatus for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted me on the 24th day of June, 1879. Fig. 4 represents, in detail, certain parts of the apparatus which is hereinafter described.
The object of this invention is to divert, direct, or concentrate the current of the river at the point or points where it is desired to construct the channel or deepen the same, so as to procure a scouring or washing power sufficient to remove the obstructing bar or shoal with or without the use of a scouring-dredge. This object is accomplished by the portable sectional jetties invented by me, arranged in the river on one or both sides, as the proposed direction of the channel may require, in such 'a manner or order as to divert or concentrate the current to the channel to be formed or deepened, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
On the drawings, A represents a barge or hull, above which is erected a frame, B, that is provided at its sides with a number of vertical guides, O, in which are operated a like number of spuds, D, those upon one side serving to hold the hull in a given position, while those upon the other side are provided with an outer frame, which consists of horizontal pieces 1 2 and vertical pieces 3 4, &c., the latter having secured to their lower ends verticalplates E, adapted to deflect or divert the current to one side or to the channel of the river or the part to be deepened. These plates E, in practice, are made in sections of twentyfive feet, more or less.
The anchoring-spuds, as well as those supporting the deflecting-plates, are raised either by hand, steam, or any other available power. For this purpose the inner sides of the spuds are furnished with racks, as shown in detail at a, the teeth of which are engaged by those of a small pinion, b, that is keyed or otherwise secured to a short shaft, 0, the journals of which operate in boxes cl, that are secured to the inner sides of the guides G. On a projecting end of the shaft 0 is keyed a cog-wheel, e, the teeth of which mesh into those of a pinion, f, that is secured on a horizontal shaft, g, which operates in boxes connected with the uprights of the frame B. Like the deflectingplates, the shaft 9 is made in sections, and in order that they may be thrown into or out of I gear, the different sections are connected by sliding couplings h, that are operated in the usual manner by a yoke, i, and pivoted lever 7c.
The object in making the shafts g and plates E in sections is to enable the latter to be operated independent of one another. This is essentially necessary, as in most streams the beds are of a sloping or uneven character.
The lower edge of the deflecting-plates are furnished with cushions Z, and the under side of the piece 2 is grooved throughout its whole length-the former to prevent the water leaking through and to be buried more deeply and securely in the river-bottom,
The barges, boats, or hulls, made insections, (two or more,) constituting'the portable sectional jetties, are moved down the river or stream to the obstruction bar or shoal, where they are anchored, their vertical plates sunk so as to bear hard upon the river-bottom, and the barges are arranged in a series at such an angle as the circumstances. may require, and on one or both sides of the river-banks in such manner or order as to divert, direct, or concentrate the current to the channel to be formed or deepened. When the obstruction bar or shoal is removed by the scouring or washing process caused by the diverted currents of water, aided by the sconring-dred ge when nec' essary, the sectional jetties are moved down or up the river to the next place of operation. As before stated, this invention is intended more especially for use in conjunction with my the latter to enable the frame dredging apparatus. It may, however, in some instances, be used independently of the said invention.
A number of boats equipped as above should be employed, when necessary, to operate on bars of great length.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a means of removin g bars or deepening channels, a series of barges or floats provided with vertically adjustable plates adapted, where'applied, to close the Water-course to its bottom and or points to forth.
deflect the current to the point be deepened, substantially as set 2. A portable sectional jetty consisting of a barge, A, provided with vertical guides O, in which operate spuds D, those upon one side of the boat furnished with deflecting-plates E, as described, and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with the deflecting-plates E, a cushion, l, as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereto my name.
signed JOHN GRAN T.
In presence of JAMES C. KIDDELL, J. 0. HUBBELL.
