UNITED STATES PATENT OEFioE.
MANUELF. DE SOUZA, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
VALVE FOR STEAM-PUM PS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,575, dated March 16, 1880.
Application filed December 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, MANUEL F. DE SOUZA, of Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves for SteamPumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to steam-pumps; and it consists in the peculiar construction and an rangeinent of the steam chest and valve as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out, and set forth in the claim.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation Fig. 2, a central vertical section, showing the exhaustports in dotted lines; and Figs. 3 and 4 are details of parts of my invention.
A represents the steam-cylinder. B is the water-cylinder, with air-chamber O on top. E
der A, with steam-inlet pipe D and an exhaust, F, on each side.
On each side of the water-cylinder B are discharge-opening Gr and suction-opening H for the water.
I is the bed of the machine. K is the piston-rod, on which is secured the shipper J, working on the valve-rod M, between tappets On the valve-rod M, within the steam-chest, is the steam-valve, whichconsists of a hollow sleeve, 0, with four cylindrical parts or rings, 0 O 0 O fitting the bore of the steam-chest, and all made in one piece, the valve being movable on the rod. At each end of this movable valve is fastened an auxiliary valve on the rod, said valves being marked R R, and are at such distances apart as to admit of a certain movement of the movable valve.
Leading from the steam-chest E are ports Y Y into the cylinder, and in the under face i of the steam-chest is a channel, W W, with a central passage, V, leading from steam-chest and end passages, 00 00, into the chest, back of valves It B.
Steam enters through the pipes D into the chest and into the space between the parts 0 O of the movable valve, as seen in Fig. 2, and passes from the interior, through the passage or port V and groove W, through the port as, back into the chest, between the auxiliary valve R and the chest-head. It then passes through holes 1) in said auxiliary valves to the space r, between It and part 0, holding the entire movable valve as far to the left as the stop-pin a, projecting through hole I), will permit, leaving a space between 0 and R, to permit the valve-rod, with the valves RR, to be moved to the right under the shipper J, and uncover the port so, and allow steam to enter from the channel W, between the auxil- 7o iary valve R and the chest-head, and to pass through .the holes in said valve and shift the movable valve to the right.
The shipper reversing moves the valve'rod and auxiliary valves, uncovering the port :20, and closing 00, and so continues.
The auxiliary valves RR are counterbored on their faces to allow the steam, after passing through the holes 1), to expand and act on the whole face of the movable valve.
While steam is passing along the groove W, through port as, it is also passing from the center space through the port Y, on the left,
to the steam-cylinder, and, moving the piston to the right, exhausts through the port 8 5 Y and exhaust-ports into the space between the parts 0 and O and into either exhaustopening F, as may be convenient. Then, when the piston-head is at the end of its stroketo the right the shipper has moved the valverod 0 M and auxiliary valves R It to the right, letting steam through the port 00, to work the valve, as above stated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters 5 Patent, is-- In a steam-pump, the valve-rod M, having attached valves R B, with holes p p and cir cular spaces a" a", and movable valve 0, having In testimony that I claim the foi'egoing as rings 0 O O 0 in combination with steammy own I affix my signature in presence of chest E, provided with stop-pin a, and chantwo Witnesses.
nel W W, with central passage, V, and end MANUEL F. DE SOUZA. passages, .00 so, all constructed and arranged Witnesses: to operate in the manner and for the purpose CLINTON L. OONKLING,
set forth. GEORGE BARRELL.
