Description

UNITED .STATES PATENT OEEIcE.-
ALBERT FULDNER, -OF S'I. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BEER-BUNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,515, dated March 16, 1880.
Application led January 12, 1880.
To all whom t may concern: u
Be it known that I, ALBERT FULDNER, of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Beer-Brings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to 4the annexed drawings and letters marked thereon.
This invention relates to an improved bung for beer or other barrels; and it consists in so constructing the body of the bung that after it is put in its place in a barrel it may be transformed into a vent-plug by simply punching through that part of it above a partial venthole in the under side, where the said hole is covered with a valve, all of which will lo hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 represents a cross-section of the bung, showing above it the proper awl to be used. Fig. 2 is also a cross-section, showing the awl as applied. Fig. 3 is an under-side view, showing the lm of iexible material.
F represents the bung when first made ready to be placed in a barrel. In the lower or in side is made a hole, A, which may extend nearly through the bung, but leaving substance enough to sustain the pressure of the liquid Within the barrel.
B is a center point exactly in line with the axis of the hole A, so that by forcing the awl E through the Wood from B to A a throughvent will be formed in thebung. D is a piece of flexible material sufcently yielding in its nature to allow the air to pass through the vent A, but to resist the pressure of the gas from within.
The shank of the awl E should be shorter than the thickness of the bung, so that when `shoved through the solid part its point can-
