Description
l 2,254,868 Sept 2 1941- c. D. BROWN LOOM SELVAGE DEV I CE Filed Nov. 5; 1940 INVENTOR. @EL D. BeoW/v.
Patented Sept. 2, 194i LOGE/ SELVAGE DEVICE Carl D. Brown, Hopedale, Mass., assignor to Draper Corporation, Hopedale, lviass, a. corporation of Maine Application November 5, 1940, Serial No. 364,441
8 Claims. 139-195) This invention pertains to looms and more particularly relates to selvage kdevices therefor.
It is general practice in weaving cloth to add eXtra ends in the selvage to carry the strain or jerk of the iilling yas the shuttle is picked across to the opposite side of the loom. Various types of selvage devices have been employed to eliminate the necessity of having the eXtra ends for the protection of the lling. Such prior devices usually comprise a support mounted on the loom temple head and having a needle or loop retaining rlngerpivotally connected thereto and when in operative position projecting down past the selvage at the point Where the filling is beaten up, so that the shuttle draws the lling around the needle until it arrives at the box on the other side, when the needle is raised to inoperative position.
In such devices it is essential that the needle, when raised to inoperative position, not interfere with the proper operation oi the reed or other parts of the loom.
Accordingly it is the principal object of my invention to provide in a loom, a selvage device comprising a support including a housing adapted to be attached to the loom temple, a reciprocating member mounted in the housing and having a needle at one end and resilient means for holding the reciprocating member in its rearward position, which reciprocating member shall be connected to the housing by a pin and slot connection so constructed and arranged as to give the member a swinging movement in a vertical plane and then a reciprocating movement in a horizontal plane whereby the needle will be iirst lifted clear of the warp threads and then moved forwardly out oi the way or" the reed.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention are accomplished in the construction illustrated on the accompanying drawing, of which:
Fig. l is a perspective View of a portion of one end of a loom having my invention applied thereto; i
Fig. 2 is a view in cross-section taken on line 2-2 of Eig. 1 and showing the needle in its operative position;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to that of Fig. 2, but showing the needle raised to inoperative position; and,
Fig. 4 is a view similar to that of Fig. 2, but shows the needle raised to inoperative position and moved to its forward position. l As `the invention is applicable to any type of loom wherein there is a frame, a lay, shed forming mechanism, a shuttle and shuttle picking mechanism, and other usual instrumentalites, it is considered unnecessary to illustrate such fea-V tues which are familiar to those skilled in the ar Accordingly only a small portion of the right hand side or" a loom is shown, including the right hand loom temple on which the selvageV device is mounted. As the construction is generally similar at both sides of the loom ity isconsidered suicient only to refer to that of one side.
On the drawing is shown a portion of the usual lay i, hand rail 2,V reed 3shuttle guard rail. 4 and the right handvtemple 5.
The selvage device of myv invention is shown as mounted on the temple head `and may comi prise a housing indicated generally at 6. The housing may be formed as a single integral piece or may be made in two separate pieces as shown on the drawing.V The housing may comprise a pair of spaced plates 'l and 8. 'Ihese plates are held apart by the spacing lugs 9 and I0 which are formed integralvwith plate l. A bolt Il secures plates 'I and 8 together. A pin I2 formed integral with plate 8, projects into an opening in plate l, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Plate 8 has formed integral therewith and substantially at right angles thereto an attaching portion I3. The attaching portion I3 has an elongated opening therein for the reception of a bolt I4 by means of which the housing is adjustably attached to the head i5 of the temple 5. The plate I has an extension I5" extending outwardly from its upper edge for a purpose later to be described.
By means of the spacing lugs 9 and ItY and the bolt II, plates I and 8 are rmly heldr together in parallel spaced apartv planes forming therebetween a guide-way or passage way Il.
Mounted in guidepassageway Il in housing 6 for-reciprocatory movement therein is amenivber I8. Member `I8 has an upstanding lug I9 at one end. Lug I9 has an opening therein for the reception of the threaded arm 2U of a bunter 2i. BunterV 2| is adjustably secured toY lug' I9 by means of lock nuts 22, 23. Member I8 at its other end has an opening 2li for the reception e of `a needle bar 25. Needle bar. 251s adjustably secured .to member Ill-by means of setv screw 26. Needle bar 25 may carry oneor more spaced needles 2l.` Member I8 hasformed on its bottom side and intermediate its ends an open ended slot or recess 28. Vlin I2 which extends f transversely ofthe guideway I'I4 is located within slot 28 'and bears 'against the upperl'wall oi slot 28 thereby guiding and supporting member I8 in its reciprocatory movements; in addition pin I2 forms a pivot about which member I8 may be swung in a vertical plane, that is when member I8 has moved rearwardly and pin I2 rests against the closed end of slot 28.
The bolt II in addition to its function of securing plates 'I and y8 together, acts as a stop to limit the downward movement of member I3 as it swings in its vertical arc. Bolt I I also acts as a supporting and guiding surface for member I8 on its reciprocatory movement. The extension I6 on plate 'I acts as a stop to limit the upward swing of member I8.
A coiled spring 29 has one en d secured to eX- tension I6 as at 30 and the other end secured to lug I9 as at 3|. The function of spring 29 is to urge member I8 rearwardly in guideway I'I until pin I2 abuts the closed end of slot 28, then the spring causes member I8 to swing about pin I2 as a pivot, the rearward end of member I8 which carries the needle bar moving downwardly until it abuts bolt I I.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The device is adjustably mounted on the temple so that when the needle 21 is in its lowermost or operative position, the point of the needle is between the warps, adjacent the selvage just behind the beaten in weft. When the shuttle is picked across the warps from that side or selvage of the fabric, the weft will loop about the needle and will'be held thereby against being pulled inwardly. When the lay moves forwardly to beat in the weft the shuttle guard rail 4 will engage the bunter 2I and against the pull of spring 29 will swing member I8 about pin I2 as a pivot thereby raising the needle 21 upwardly from the warp. When the forward end of `member I8 abuts the stop extension I6, the upward swinging movement stops and as the shuttle guard rail 4 continues to move forwardly member I8 will slide forward in guideway I'I against the pull of spring 29. Member I8 in its forward movement slides on and is supported by pin I2. Upon the rearward movement of shuttle guard rail 4, the spring 29 slides the member I8 rearwardly until pin I2 abuts the closed end of slot 28 whereupon the spring causes member I8'to turn about pin I2 as a pivot thereby lowering the needles 21 into operative position. W'hen the needles are in operative position the rearward end of member I8 abuts the bolt II which acts as a stop limiting the downward movement of member |18.
