. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY GU'IH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VENTI `I ATI NG-VALVE FO E-NITING-CASIKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ratent No, 225,368, dated March 9, 1880,
Application led December 31, 1878.
To rtll'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GUTE, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating- Valve and Air-Cock for Fermenting-Gasks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters ofV reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
vThis invention relates to certain improvements upon the invention for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 203,580 were granted to J. Bersch, May 14, 1878 5 and it has for its object to provide for the more accurate operation of the'weighted cylinder upon its guide-disks, and to render the apparatus more compact and less liable to accidental injury.
To this end the invention consists in providing said cylinder with an annular shoulder at its lower outer end, and with a series of weights adapted to sitthereon, whereby the weight-rod, which is apt to be bent or injured, is dispensed with, and the cylinder more accurately guided upon its disks as it is elevated or depressed, as more i'ullylhereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side eleva-tion of my improved device ready' to be applied to a fermenting-cask; Fig. 2, a central .vertical section through the same;
and Fig. 3, an enlarged detail, in vertical sec-A tion, of the plug or thimble for attaching the device to the cask.
The tube A is provided with piston-disks A A2, perforated or notched to allow the gas and froth overflowing from the tube A to escape.
The cylinder-tube B is weighted in any de-` sired manner, preferably by metallic rings b b, which fit around the cylinder and rest upon a flange at its lower edge. A rubber washer or disk, C, is placed in the cylinder to hermetically close the upper end of the tube.
The lower end of the' tube A screws into a screw plug or thimble, D, with threads formed upon its inner and outer surfaces, the outer threads being screwed tightly and accurately into a hole in the upper side of the cask, so that `when the tube A is secured 'in place it will always be in a vertical position.A
Between the lower disk or piston, A2, on the tube and the point of attachment to the cask a branch pipe, E, connects with the tube A, and is provided with a stop-cock, E', and an external screw-thread upon its end, which will permit an air pipe' or hose connected with an air-compressor to be attached.
The branch pipe E may be connected by hose with similar pipes and cocks attached to any of the other fermenting-casks when it is desired to transfer an excess of gas from one of the vats to another, and thus utilize the gas which would otherwise escape through the valve to hasten the fermentation ot the beer which is still unripe.
Between the lower disk or piston, A2, and the point where the air-pipe joins the tube A a stop-cock, F, is placed, which is to be kept open while the fermenting-valve is in use and closed when the air-valve is opened, so that the compressed air used to vdischarge the beer from the fermenting-cask to the barrels will not escape through the tube and valve.
As the weight, in the present instance, is below the top of the cylinder, it will tend to hold the said cylinderv concentric with the disks, and closed at its upper end, where it is provided with a valve, C, and one or more annular Weights, held on the outside of the cylinder ata point below the center of gravity of the same, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own .I laffix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
E. GUTE.
