, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. BLEWETT, or RICHARDSON, TEXAS.
SPARK-E XTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,326, dated March 9, 1880..
Application filed January 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. BLEWETT, of Richardson, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference markedthereon, which form a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to spark-extinguishers, having for its object to prevent the-burning of buildings and other combustible mat ter by steam-engines; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view, of the connection to the boiler.
A represents a boiler of any desired construction, and having attached thereto a smoke stack of pipe, B, by means of a cap, a, fitting over flanges on the pipe and the stack of the boiler, so as to allow the pipe to be swung around in any position. Any number of straight joints, 1), may be attached to the pipe B, and connected together by means of bolts,
' or in any other desired manner, the end joint or the exit for the sparks and smoke being provided with a funnel-mouth, c.
0 represents a watentank, which is made preferably of the form shown, and which may be provided with wheels to render it easy of transportation. From each of the four torners of this tank B extend rods (1, which meet and are joined together in the center of the tank, and which form a rest for the end of the pipe. The tank B is filled with water, which receives all the fire and sparks that pass out through the pipe and extinguishes them at once, thereby rendering it perfectly safe for gins, thrashers, and all other steamworks, and thereby avoiding a great loss by fire which has heretofore. been occasioned by the use of said steam-engines in the places named. By this arrangement the sparks may be carried any desired distance from the work,
and at the same time operate equally well, and the smoke may be carried in any desired direction to suit the convenience of the operator and the direction of the wind.
I am aware that it is not new to carry sparks passing through the smoke stack or pipe and extinguish them, and I do not claim such, broadly, as my invention; but heretofore the direction of the pipe could not be changed without moving the boiler or removing the pipe and making new connect-ions, and the device was not adapted to carry the sparks to any desired distance from the work and in any direction to suit the direction of the Wind. The tanks heretofore used were either perforated or entirely open at the top. The first is objectionable for the reason that, especially in wet weather, the perforations are liable to clog and render the operation of the device impracticable. The second is objectionable because no support is formed for the end of the pipe, which is necessary when any length of same is used.
By my arrangement it is obvious that all these objections are overcome. The pipe can be swung in any direction and at will. The tank furnishes a support for the end of the pipe, and at the same time the operation is perfect.
I am aware that a spark-extinguisher has been provided with a pipe to be swung in different directions, and therefore do not broadly claim such devices; but,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a spark-extinguisher, the pipe B, having joints b and funnel-mouth 0, connected to a boiler, A, by means of the cap 00, whereby the pipe may be swung in any desired direction, in combination with the portable water-tank 0, having the angular rodsd, adapted to support the outer end of the pipe B, all constructed and arranged as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE L. BLEWETT. Witnesses:
W. G. HARRIS, O. H. BLEWETT.
