\ (2.11. GUSHMAN. Measure for Boots or Shoes.
-No. 225,210. Patented Mar. 9, 1880.

NFD'ERS. PHOTD-LIYHOGRAPHER, WASNINGTON. B. C.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. GUS'HMAN, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
MEASURE FOR BOOTS'OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,210, dated March 9, 1880.
Application filed October 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. CUSHMAN, of Lynn, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Measures for Boots and Shoes; andI do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, which is a top view or plan of a shoe-measure embodying my invention.
The said measure is to be made of paper or other suitable sheet material; and it consists of a. base or sole-contour plate, a heel post or projection, and three series of straps extending from such base-plate and heel-post, in manner substantially as represented.
In the drawing, A denotes the rectangular or base plate, and B the flexible heel-post, the latter being extended from the middle of one end of such plate.
Projecting in opposite directions from the said base-plate, in manner as shown, is a set of six or other suitable number of straps, O G O 0 C O, and in like manner there extends from the heel-post another set, D D E'E E E, of like straps.
Each of the straps O D E has a slot, a, made through it near its outer end, and there is' arranged with and projects into such slot, in manner as represented, a metallic point or catch, 11. In order to provide each of the said straps O D E with such points, 1 fold the strap back near its end and place between the two parts ,of the strap a triangular piece of metal, and
secure it in place by paste or cement or other suitable means, and subsequently form the slot through the parts of the strap that may be folded and cemented together. Each baseplate strap I usually extend into the base-plate in manner as shown.
In using the measure to ascertain, for the making of a shoe, the dimensions of a persons foot and the lower part of the leg immediately above the foot, the base-plate is to rest on afioor. or on a suitable flat surface, and the heel-post is to be turned up to a right angle, or thereabout, with such plate. The foot to be measured is next to be placed on the base-plate and with the heel against the heel-post. This having been done, an attendant, with a point or pencil, is to mark on the base'plate the outline of the foot, and to turn up over and on the ,footthe straps of the base-plate and insert each of them on one side of the plate through its fellow of the other side thereof. The person is to draw the straps with proper tension on the foot, and while they are so drawn he is to insert the point of each slotted strap in the fellow strap, so .as to couple or buckle the two straps together.
The fellow straps of the heel part are to be similarly applied to the leg and buckled or connected together, those at the base of the heel part, or at its junction with the base-plate, being extended obliquely about the foot from the heel up to the vertex of the angle of the instep and leg. On unbuckling or disconnecting the straps the measures will thus have been taken for the making of a shoe or boot to fitto the foot, as the holes made by the points will indicate where the points are to be inserted for the straps to determine the size of a last to correspond to that of the foot.
The straps may be Without the means described for buckling them together, in which case, when those of each pair are drawn about the foot, they may be marked, notched, or punctured to indicate how they subsequently are to be arranged with each other.
My invention, though in some respects like the measuring apparatus described in the United States Patent No. 33,307, dated September 17, 1861, differs in others materially therefrom-that is to say, my measure has a device upon which the entire contour of the sole or edge of the foot can be marked with a pencil, and it also has, to what I term the post B, the series of leg-measuring straps E E, in addition to the pair D D of straps to measure around the foot from the heel to the upper part of the instep, such enabling me to obtain what cannot be accomplished by the apparatus of the said patentviz., the contour of the sole and the measure of the lower portiou of the leg just above the ankle. Furthermore, in my measure the straps of the solecontour plate project within, and are formed in part from, such plate, in manner as represented, in order that they may be properly turned up around the foot without bending the plate upward to interfere with the proper marking out thereon of the sole-contour.
I claim as my invention 1. The improved shoe measure, substantially as described, consisting of the sole-contour-measuring base-plate and its foot-measuring straps, and the heel-post and its foot and leg measuring straps, all being arranged to operate in manner and. for use as described.
2. The sole-measuring plate provided with 10 the heel-post and its straps, and having footmeasuring straps formed in part from and eX- tending within it, (the said sole measuring p1ate,) substantially in manner as represented.
GEO. H. OUSHMAN.
