2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in transfer elevators for use in oil fields and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying novel safety means whereby accidental disengagement of a sucker rod section therefrom will be positively prevented.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a transfer elevator of the aforementioned character embodying an eye bolt of unique construction whereby the transfer line may be expeditiously and securely connected to the device without the necessity of using wrenches or other tools.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a transfer elevator of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly ecient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a view in front elevation of a transfer elevator constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, showing a sucker rod section engaged in the device.
Figure 4 is a top plan view.
Figure 5 is a detail View in front elevation of the eye bolt.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a vertical channel member I of suitable metal. The channel member I is for the reception of the usual coupling head 2 on the upper end of a sucker rod section 3. Toward this end, the lower end 4 of the channel member I has extending thereinto from the open front of said channel member a notch or recess 5 for the reception of the sucker rod 3. Further, the lower end 4 of the member I has formed therein a socket or depression 6 in which the head 2 seats.
Formed in the sides 1 of the channel member I are vertical slots 8. Mounted for vertical sliding movement on the channel member I and extending across the open front thereof is a substantially U-shaped guard 9 for preventing disengagement of the sucker rod 3 from the elevator. Formed integrally with the ends of the guard 9 are plates I0 which are slidable on the side walls 'I of the member I over the slots 8. Guide bolts I I are threaded through the plates I0 and engaged in the slots 8 for slidably securing the guard 9 on the member I. The plates I0 terminate, at their upper ends, in outturned lips or flanges I2 to facilitate lifting the vguard 9. A vertical slot I3 is also provided in the back I4 of the channel member I.
Mounted on the upper end I5 of the channel member I is an eye bolt I6 for connecting the transfer line (not shown) to the elevator. The bolt I6 comprises a head or eye I'I which rises .from a circumferentially grooved `or channeled neck I8 on the shank I9 of said bolt. Then,
`the upper front portion ofthe eye I'I has formed therein a vertically extending recess or notch 20. A nut 2I is threaded on the lower end portion of the shank I9 for securing the eye bolt I6 on the upper end I5 of the channel member I. Referring to Figure 5 of the drawing, it will be observed that the lower rear portion of the eye II has formed therein inclined grooves 22 establishing communication between the channeled neck I8 and the opening in said eye I'I.
In use, the guard 9 is raised on the channel member I for permitting the coupling head 2 to be engaged in said channel member. The guard 9 is then permitted to drop to lowered position in which position said guard will positively prevent accidental disengagement of the sucker rod section from the elevator. Of course, to remove th-e elevator from the sucker rod section, it is only necessary to again lift the guard 9. The bolts II travel in the slots 8 and limit sliding movement of the guard 9, in addition to securing said guard on the channel member I. To connect the transfer line to the elevator, a loop is formed in the line and said loop is inserted through the eye II of the bolt I6 from the front of said eye. This loop is then brought downwardly in back of .and then forwardly under the channel member l and then brought up and engaged in the grooved or channeled neck I8. The loop is then drawn tight in the grooved or channeled neck I8 and extends therefrom into the eye I'I through the grooves 22. When the elevator is suspended from the line, said line enters the eye I'I through the notch or recess 29. When the loop is formed the free end thereof is secured to the line.
It is believed that the many advantages of a sucker rod transfer elevator constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a pref-erred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, itis to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A transfer elevator of the character described comprising a member for connection with a sucker rod section, and an eye bolt on the mem'- ber for connecting a transfer line thereto, said eye bolt including a circumferentially grooved neck, an eye rising from the neck, said eye having a vertical groove in the upper portion of one side thereof for the reception of 4the transfer line, said eye further having a pair of inclined grooves in the lower portion of its opposite side establishing communication between the grooved neck and the opening of said eye, the last named grooves for the reception of the transfer line.
2. A transfer elevator for sucker rods comprising a channel member for the reception of a sucker rod, opposed Walls of the channel member having vertical slots therein, and means for securing the sucker rod in the channel member, said means including a substantially U-shaped guard straddling the channel member, integral plates rising from the end portions of the guard and slidable on said opposed Walls of the channel member, guides on the plates slidable in the slots, and integral outturned lifting flanges on the upper ends of said plates.
