Description

H. HUMPIIRE-VILLE. Spray-Dampenersr No. 225,056. I Patented Mar. '2, 1880..
-WITNESSES- HNVENTOR- ".PEI'ERS, PNOTO LITHOGRAFHER4 WASHINGTON, DC-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HUMPHREVILLE, OF MOUNTV1LTJE7ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO ROBERT M. SLAYMAKER, OF LANCASTER, PA.
SPRAY-DAMPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,056, dated March 2,-1880.
Application filed January 5, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HUMPHREVILLE, of Mountville, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Spray-Dampeners, of which the following is a specification.
This improvement relates to a class of atomizers or spray dampeners, and has for its object to utilize atmospheric pressure with the x force of the lungs by the arrangement herein set forth. p
The accompanying drawing illustrates the vessel and pipes, showing a vertical section with letters of reference marked thereon.
I 5 Thevessel A, of the desired size, made out,
of thy/plate, has a convex top or affixed cover. This" cover has a central opening 'at a, over which the oblique pipe B is soldered, so as to communicate with the interior of the vessel A. This pipe is tapering to a reduced opening directly. in front and on a. level with the openingof a vertical pipe,D,of a small diameter, extending down on the inner side of said vessel "to near the bottom thereof. A tubular handle or pipe. 0, opens into the top of the vessel directly under the cover of the same and opposite the vertical pipe D. This handle or pipe 0 is used for introducing water into the vessel when it is ready for use, as also for a mouth-piece or blow-pipe to blow into to produce the spray for dampening tobacco or the like.
I am aware that B. R. Foot uses a vertical pipe and a horizontal blowing-pipe on a vessel 3 5 with the same object in view, patented June 29,
1869, No. 92,029, in which he claims the combination of his external pipe, provided with wings, with a vertical pipe from the interior of the vessel. I therefore do not claim a vertical pipe and horizontal pipe separately considered. m p
I am aware that various devices are in use for atomizers, and to force a spray partially by direct pressure upon the surface of the liquids, and partially by passing over the outer end of a pipe leading into said liquid, as seen in Patent No. 143,070, September 23, 1873, in which a flexible bulb.on the top of the vessel forces the air down upon the liquid. Such an arrangement and combination I do not claim 0 or use.
What 1 deem to be new and useful is the combination of my handled blow-pipe and its combined action of pressure and upper escape of the air to meet the jet and spray the water, 5 5 as a whole constituting a new article to the trade. Therefore,
What I claim as my improvement in spraydampeners, as constituting a new article of manufacture, is--- The arrangement,in a vessel, A, of the combined tubularhandle blow pipe and funnel* O, the oblique tapering pipe B, communicating with the interiorof the vessel, and the vertical suction or spray pipe D, the whole as and for the purpose specified.
HENRY HUMPHREVILLE.
