RECTAL SPECULUM.

SPEGIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 224,991, dated March 2, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. BRINK- ERHOFF, of Upper Sandusky, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rectal Specula for Discovering Hemorrhoidal Tumors; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters marked thereon.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 2 is a perpendicular view, showing spread of handles. Fig. 3 is a view resting on one handle, showing slide drawn. Fig. 4 shows it in use, with tumor entered and mode of operating. Fig. 5 shows an end view with slide removed and handles ofi. Fig. 6 shows a sectional end view of slide through line as 00, Fig. 3.

The nature of my invention consists in the useof a slide extending through the length of one side of the tube and an incline inside of the forward or small end of the chamber,

extending from the bottom of the chamber up- 2 5 ward and forward to the under side of the slide when in place, to prevent injury to the membrane while withdrawing the instrument and to prevent the impaction of pile-tumors and enlarged glands in its end, and thereby 3o preventing itswithdrawal only with difficulty and danger.

To enable others to make and use my invention who are skilled in the art, I will proceed to describe the same more fully and clearly.

5 My speculum is made of metal and plated in the usual manner to secure a bright interior and smooth surface. In shape it is conical, and has one side slotted-through itsentire length of chamber.

Around the large end of tube A is a flange 4 5 or lip, G, to prevent the entrance of anal membrane or surplus skin, and in the forward end of the chamber is an incline, K, made necessary in specula having closed ends to prevent the entrance of faeces into the speculum, to prevent the impaction of pile-tumors,

Into such slot H is closely enlarged glands, or surplus membrane in the end of the chamber, and thereby enable the operator to withdraw the instrument with safety and ease.

I am aware that slotted specula are common, and I do not claim such as any part of my invention.

My invention differs from others in this, that while their sides are open from end to end when the examination is made in the rec- 6o tum, and the abnormal parts enter through the entire length at once, the lower end often becoming entirely closed first and cutting 01f all view of the upper part, mine only admits such parts through the opening as made by slowly drawing the slide downward, even .to the anal orifice, if desired, the adjustable slide enabling me tokeep'out all desired below its inner end, and admit what is to be examined Without any obstruction to the view.

Some of the advantages of my invention are made clear and plain by clasping the speculum in one hand and drawing the slide with the other. At the same time, with the large end to ward a strong light, look in and examine 7 5 the hand through the slot.

Having thus fully described my invention, its nature, mode of construction, and manner of using the same, what I claim as new, and

desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isv 1. A slide in the side ofa speculum, extending through its whole length, andused substantially as herein described.

2. The incline in the front end ofthe sham her, in combination with the tube, slot, and slide, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. In cylindrical tubular specula having a slotted side and closed end to prevent the entrance of faeces, the incline in the front end of the chamber, extending upward from the bottom and forward to under side of slide, substantially as described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
