The present invention relates to mechanism for controlling registration of a web upon which a printing operation takes places and embodies, more specifically, a protective device by means of which such'web register control mechanisms may be rendered inoperative in the event of a break of the web during operation. 1
In applicant's copending application Serial No.
128,888, filed April 4, 1937, now Patent No. 2,105,185, granted January 11, 1938, for "Web registering mechanism, there is described a mechanism by means of which proper registra tion is effected of a web upon which printing operations take place. This mechanism utilizes a photoelectric cell which is exposed to the moving web and, when a dark spot on the web moves past the cell, causes lamps to be energized to indicate when the web is out of registry and whether the web is leading or lagging in time phase to the proper operation. Compensation for leading or lagging conditions of the web is accomplished through adjustment of a web tensioning roller which operates in responsev to the control operations of the web register controlling mechanism.
Upon occurrence of a break. in the paper web with the web registering indicia positioned before the photoelectric cell of the web register controlling mechanism, the web tensioning or compensating roller is actuated to its limit position,' before the presses can be' shut down and the web register controlling mechanism rendered inoperative. This condition necessitates laborious readjustment of the compensating roller to its proper' position with relation to the web and printing rollers before the presses can be put back into operation. The present invention contemplates the provision 'of means by which the web register controlling mechanism may be rendered inoperative immediately upon a breaking of the web.
An object of the present invention is to provide a protective mechanism by means of which web registry indications may be given to indicate the condition oi registry of the moving web, the indicating means and web tensioning means for such mechanism being disconnected in the event of a paper break during operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a protective device in combination with a web registry indicating and control mechanism, wherein the circuit of the indicating and control mechanism is deenergized by an auxiliary circuit which is actuated upon the occurrence of a paper break during operation.
Further objects of the invention will be apparent as it is described in greater detail in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure is a diagrammatic illustration of a mechanism constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, the moving web, upon which printing operations take place is illustrated at II, this web being controlled and driven, in accordance with current practice and by mechanism which it is unnecessary to describe in detail herein. For purposes of registration, this web is provided with an indexing indicia illustrated at H, such indicia being applied to the web preferably during the first printing operation which takes place upon a given side of the web. In order to control the registration of the web, and in accordance with applicants copending application Serial No.- 128,888, new Patent No. 2,105,185, a photoelectric cell 34 is positioned in order that it may be affected by movement of the indicia ll past it. The circuit of this photoelectric cell consists of a Wire 35 which connects the cell to the, grid of a thyratron tube 36 of the type known in the trade as type 112A. The other terminal of the ce1l 34 is connected to the filament of the tube 36 by means of a wire-31 and through resistances 38 and 39'. In a typical tube circuit,.resistance 38 is of 6000 ohms while resistance 39 is of 600 ohms. I
The filament circuit of the tube 36 includes wires 40, 4| and 42,'a resistance 43 being connected in the wire 40 and a lamp 44 in the wire 42. In the typical circuit above referred to, the resistance 43 is of ohms and the lamp. 44 is of 25-watt '-volt rating. The terminals of wires 40 and 4| are connected to a 110-volt source of current. v
A resistance 45 is connected between wires-31 and 4| by means of a wire 46. In the typical circuit above referred to, resistance 45 is of 4000 ohms.
The plate circuit of the tube 36 includes wires 41 and 48, wire 48 being connected to wire 42 and lamp 44. A condenser 49 is connected across the plate circuit by means of a wire 50, the condenser having a rating of one microfarad in the typical circuit above referred to.
A relay 5| is connected in the. plate circuit, this relay having a contactor 52 which is adapted to engage terminals 53 and 54. Terminal 53 is connected to one side of a suitable power source by means of'a wire 55 while terminal 54 is connected to a circuit interruptor 26 by means of a wire 56, The interruptor 26 is adapted to enthe printing press a suitable fashion.

The drum switch 21 is mounted upon a shaft which is either the drive shaft of or else is driven thereby in II which is connected through almost on -half of the periphery of the drum 21, and a contact :segment 30 which likewise extends throughout almost one-half of the periphery of the drum side thereof from the segment 29.
