FLOOR PoLIsHING DEVICE Filed Jan. 6, 1940 Patented July 1, 1941 UPMTED STATES 4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in floor polishing devices, and has for its primary object to provide a simple, inexpensive, effective device for holding a liquid polishing material and for discharging the same upon a floor at the will of the operator, and for thereafter causingsaid polishing material to be distributed over said floor in a manner to produce a polished surface therefor.
Another object of the invention is to provide Aa polishing device embodying therein a container l for the polishing liquid having a polishing unit detachably secured to the under side thereof and including a forming member having a pad of soft absorbent polishing material Wrapped therearound and adapted to be clamped between said forming member and the under side of a clamping member which is fastened to the bottom of the container.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a polishing device including a relatively light weight, inexpensive metal container having a clamping member attached thereto and adapted to be utilized for the purpose of strengthening said container and for securing the polishing unit to the under side thereof, said clamping member also having means embodied therein whereby a handle for the device may be firmly secured thereto at a side of the container.
The invention consists of a floor polishing device as set forth in the following Specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a fioor polishing device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the polishing device.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the device as taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
In the drawing, 5 represents a container, preferably constructed of metal, and constituting a reservoir for a liquid polishing material, as, for example, a liquid wax composition well known in the art; and 6 represents a polishing unit detachably secured to the under side of said container and provided for the purpose of distributing said liquid wax over a surface to be polished, as, for example, a floor. The container 5 is provided with a lling opening I at the top thereof having a closure 8, and with a spout 9 adapted to discharge the liquid wax from within the container upon the floor at the rear of the polishing unit 6.
Secured to the bottom of the container 5 in any suitable manner is a plate I0 constituting a clamping member, and said plate is extended laterally at II and bent upwardly arounda side of the container to provide a combined socket and clamping portion I2 in which a handle I3 is detachably secured by means of a bolt I4 and thumb nut I5. An edge portion I6 of the clamping portion I2 is secured to the side of the container 5 in a manner to streng-then the structures of both the container and the clamp. A portion kITI of the clamping plate Ill is extended beneath the discharge spout 9 in a manner to support and strengthen said spout.
The discharge orice of the spout 9 is opened and closed to control the flow of the liquid wax from the container 5 by means of an arm I8 which is pivotally attached at I9 to the under side of the clamp portion I2. A flexible closure member 20 is secured to the lower portion of the arm I8 and is held in yielding contact with the extremity of the spout 9 in a manner to constitute a valve therefor by means of a spring 2|. The arm I3 is actuated by means of a rod 22 which is mounted to slide loosely in guide members 23 provided upon the handle I 3, said rod being moved lengthwise of said handle by means of a hand lever 24 pivotally attached at 25 to the handle I3 adjacent to the upper end thereof.
The polishing unit 5 utilized to distribute the liquid wax over the surface to be polished embodies therein a forming member 26 constructed of any suitable material, preferably wood, having a pad 2l of absorbent material suitable for polishing purposes Wrapped therearound; and said polishing unit 6 is clamped to the under side of the plate Il) and beneath the container 5 in a manner to firmly secure the absorbent material of the pad 2l to the forming member 26 by means of clamping members 28 which are pivotally attached to said forming member at opposite ends thereof at 29 and are adapted to enter slots 30 provided at opposite ends of the plate III and be clamped to said plate by thumb nuts 3|. Ribs 32 formed by pressing the material of the clamping plate l downwardly a slight amount aid in holding the material of the pad 2l firmly secured between the top of the forming member 2B and the under surface of the plate Il).
In use the device of this invention is placed upon a surface to be polished with the pad 21 contacting therewith, and the hand lever 24 is actuated in a manner to cause the valve member 20 to liberate a desired amount of the polishing liquid from the container 5. The device is then moved forwardly and rearwardly as may be required to distribute said liquid over said sursaid discharge valve.
face to be polished and to rub the latter until the desired polish is obtained, additional liquid being liberated as required.
to said clamping member, a handle mounted in s said socket, and means upon said handle to actuate said discharge valve.
2. A polishing device of the character described having, in combination, a container for a liquid polishing material, a discharge Valve for said container, a clamping member rigidly fastened to vthe bottom of said container and including a socket formed integral therewith and fastened toa side of the container for mutual reinforcement', a polishing pad fast to said clamping member, a handle, means to clamp said handle in said socket, and means upon said handle to actuate 3-. A polishingdevice of the character described having, in combination, a container for a liquid polishing material, a discharge valve for said container, a clamping member rigidly fastened tothe bottom of said container and having clamping ribs and a socket embodied therein, said socket being positioned at and fastened to a side of the container for mutual reinforcement, a forming member, a pad wrapped around said forming member, means to clamp said forming member and pad to said clamping member and against said ribs, a handle mounted in said socket, and means upon said handle to actuate said discharge valve.
4. A polishing device of the character described having, in combination, a container and discharge spout for a liquid polishing material, a discharge valve for said spout, a clamping member rigidly fastened to the bottom of said container and having clamping ribs embodied therein, said clamping member being extended upwardly around a side of the container and supporting said spout and having a socket formed integral therewith fastened to said lside of the container for mutual reinforcement, -a forming member, a pad Wrapped around said forming member, means to clamp said forming member and pad to said clamping member and against said ribs, a handle mounted in said socket, and means upon said handle to actuate said discharge valve.
