Description

July 1, 1941. A; s. HULSAVER WIND INSTRUMENT 'MOUTHPIECE Filed Sept. 10. 1940 Patented July 1, 1941 UNITED STATES FHCE 5 Claims.
My invention relates to wind instruments and refers more particularly to a mouthpiece for flutes, etc.
One object of my invention is to provide a mouthpiece that anybody can use without having any experience or training at all.
Another object of my invention is to provide a mouthpiece for flutes or the like that can be attached to any of the conventional instruments easily.
A further object of my invention is to provide a mouth-piece attachable to flutes or the like, wherein. the lips of the user are held in seal against the rim of the bell of the mouthpiece by suction or a partial vacuum.
I attain these objects preferably by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein like parts are referred to by similar numerals throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross section of the device.
Figure 2 is a plan of the device.
The flute, etc. I, has a conventional opening 2, and over the opening is a mouthpiece 3, with a fiat tapered end 4, which mouthpiece is pref" erably round at 5, and has a bell 6, with a preferably rounded rim 1, that is undercut at 8, so that when the lips of the user are placed against the rim 1 of the rounded portion and the player blows, there will be a partial vacuum under the undercut portion causing a partial vacuum or suction thereunder so that the players lips will be firmly held in place.
On the rounded portion 5, is a ring 9, integral thereof with an extension l8, that is connected with a band II, with an opening l2, which open- 1 ing is larger than the opening 2, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2.
This band II, is split at I3, forming two cars M and I5, one of which is threaded at if) to engage with an adjusting screw the screw I1, is screwed up the held firmly in place.
Having thus illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction or arrangement device will be of parts shown, since it is evident that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A mouthpiece of the character described comprising a shank with a band integral thereof, adapted to fit over a musical instrument, said shank having a cup portion provided. with a rounded rim extending from the shank portion, l:
a flat shoulder under the inner periphery of the rounded rim and a tone chamber in said cup portion connected with a throat of circular cross so that when section at the outlet of the said tone chamber and extending through the said shank and ter minating in a narrow flat outlet.
2. A mouthpiece of the character described comprising a shank with a split band integral thereof adapted to be fitted over a musical instrument, said shank having a cup portion forming a tone chamber, said cup portion provided with a rounded rim, an angular shoulder under the inner periphery of the rounded rim, the tone chamber in said cup portion connected with a throat of substantially circular cross section at the outlet of the said tone chamber and extending through the said shank and terminating in a narrow flat outlet.
3. A mouthpiece of the character described comprising a shank with a split adjustable band integral thereof adapted to be fitted over a musical instrument, said shank having a cup portion forming a tone chamber, said cup portion provided with a rounded rim, an angular shoulder under the inner periphery of the rounded rim providing the said tone chamber with a vacuum means, the tone chamber in said cup portion connected with a throat of circular cross section at the outlet out the said tone chamber and extending through the said shank and terminating in a fiat narrow outlet.
4. A mouthpiece of the character described comprising a shank with a split adjustable band integral thereof adapted to be fitted over a musical instrument, said shank having a cup portion forming an air chamber, said cup portion provided with a rounded rim, an angular shoulder under the inner periphery of the rounded rim providing the air chamber with a vacuum means, maintaining a partial vacuum under the said inner periphery of the rounded rim, the air chamber in said 'cup portion connected with a throat to a passage of substantially round cross section at the outlet of the air chamber and extending through the said shank and terminating in a narrow flat outlet.
5. A mouthpiece of the character described comprising a shank with a split, adjustable band integral thereof adapted to be fitted over and be locked to a musical instrument, said shank having a cup portion forming an air chamber, said cup portion provided with a rounded rim, an angular shoulder under the inner periphery of the rounded rim providing the air chamber with a partial vacuum means, the air chamber in the cup portion connected with the throat to a passage of round cross section at the outlet of the air chamber and extending fan shaped throughout the said shank and terminating in a narrow flat outlet.
