Description
V L'. T. HARPER. Hay-Burner Attachment for Stoves. Iva-224,683 Patented Feb. 17, 81.80;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVERETT' T. HARPER, OF SIOUX FALLS, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
HAY-BURNER'ATTAOHMENT FOR STOVES.
" SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,683, dated February 1'7, 1880.
Application filed December 19, 1879.
To all whom it may. concern Be it known that I, LEVERETT T. HARPER, of Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha, Dakota Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Burner Attachments for Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact de' scription 6f the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cookstove with the hayburner attached. Fig. 2is a vertical central section of the hay-burner attachment. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the follower.
The present invention relates to that class of devices used to enable hay or any like 1naterial to be burned as fuel in cook and other stoves; and the novelty consists more particularly in the construction of the device and its special adaptation for use, all as will now be more in detail set out and explained.
In the accompanying drawings. A denotes any ordinary cook-stove, and in one of the potholes, as at-ct, the lid being removed, is placed 1 the lower or bottom end of the body part b of the hay-burning attachment B. This part of attachment B is usually of a cylindrical shape,
and made of sheet metal; but the top rim, 1), and the flange 1), which is designed to fit over and about the pothole, may be made of castiron, and both may be secured to the body part in any convenient Way.
It is designed that the body part bshall be of suitable diameter to fit reasonably close into the pot-hole, and the flange b is intended to rest upon the stove-top; and it will also close any crack or space between its sides and the edges'of the pot-hole. In this way will be afforded a firm seat for the attachment B when it is set in and upon thepot-hole a, above described.
The follower is preferably made of cast I "at one end on c and at the other on G, will serve to brace and keep the same steadythat is, always insure a ready vertical movement of 0 within the attachment B.
If desired, the mere size or shape of the at tachment can be changed so asto fit the boileropening of the stove, or it can be made square or of any desired shape or size.
In use it is designed tofill this attachment in the barn or hay-room and place it in the pot-hole over the fire-box or fire-space of the stove. As the contents are burned away at the lower end in the stove the weight of the follower O is sufficient to feed along the body of the hay to keep up active combustion.
Then a charge has burned out the attachments can be removed and easily filled again. It may be best, however, to use two'or more with each stove, and then have a filled one ready for use when that on the stovebecomes empty.
It is evident that straw, leaves, or any like substance may be used in thcattachment as fuel, if desired, for I do not intend to confine it to the use of hay.
Having thus described my invention, what I consider new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hay-burner attachment B, constructed as described, and provided with the internal follower, 0, having handle 0 and arms or supports cl, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of December, 187 9.
LEVERETT T. HARPER.
