The numeral i3 designates a cup shaped packing element preferably constructed oi any suitable material. preferably of leather, and is provided with an opening i4 in the bottom thereof.
This element lll is seated within the recess l2 and is of a diameter that the peripheral wall i5 thereof will contact the cylinder wall il and when in position will rest against the bottom oi therecess in the piston.
'The numeral I6 designates another one oi the elements ol the packing and this element is lormed of any desired or suitable material, prei erably, elastic material such as rubber, and is normally oi a disc shaped formation and ci any desired or suitable thickness. The diameter of the element i6 is somewhat greater than the internal diameter of the cup shaped member it and is adapted to be forced into the cup shaped member so that it will contact with the bottom el the latter. ` The numeral, I1 designates a retainer member which may be constructed of any suitable'material and of any desired thickness, the periphery thereof being preferably formed on an arc which ,extends in a direction lengthwise of the axis oi the member l1 so as to provide a rounded periphery I8. The greatest diameter oi the retainer l1 is slightly greater than the actual, or theoretical inside diameter of the deflected portion oi the element I6 so that when the retainer member H, which in the present form of the invention is provided with aV central 'opening i9, is forced intothe element i6, it will clamp the element i6 between the retainer l1 and the cup shaped member i3. The parts are held in this assembled relation by means o! suitable fastening bolts orl screws 2li that pass through open ings 2l in the retainer I1, which are preferably countersunk, through openings tt in the element l5, openings 23 in the cup shaped member i3, and into the piston i0.
When this retainer member is forced into the cup shaped formation resulting trom lorclng the element i6 into the cup shaped member it and as` the diameter oi the retainer member i1 is greater than the internal diameter in the torina1 tion ol the element it, the area tt ol the deected portion oi the element lll will be compressed between theperipheral wall it oi the cup shaped element it that engages the cylinder wall il and the periphery oi the retainer il., "linie will result in holding the peripheral wall lll el the element i3 against the cylinder Wall without the use ci springs.

In combination, a piston operable in a cyl inder, said piston having a circumferential re cess opening through the end and periphery thereof, an annular tup iieiiible member seated in said recess and encompassing e por@ tion oi the piston, a second annular and nor@ piston whereby to draw said retainer and the said normally fiat annular member into the cup shaped member to deilect the periphery of the said normally flat annular member, the diameter of said retainer member being greater than the normal inside diameter of the deflected portion of the second said member, whereby said deflected portion of the latter will be compressed to hold 2i) the wall of the cup shaped member against the cylinder wall. f
2. In combination, a piston operable in a cylinder, said piston having a circumferential recess opening through the end and periphery thereof, an annular cup shaped flexible member seated in said recess and encompassing a portion of the piston, a second annular and normally substantially fiat flexible member of a diameter considerably greater than the inside diameter of the cup shaped member and adapted to be seated in said recess, to encompass a portion of said` piston and to normally contact the edge of the wall oi' the cup shaped member. a substantially flat rigid annular retaining member encompassing a portion of said piston and contacting the said second annular member. said retainer member being of a diameter less than the diameter of the last said annular member and also oi the cup shaped member, and fastening members passing through all of 'said members and engaging the piston whereby to draw said retainer and the said normally fiat annular member into the cup shaped member to deflect the periphery of the said normally nat annular member, the diameter of said retainer member being greater than the normal inside diameter of the deflected portion of the second said member, whereby said deflected portion of the latter will be compressed to hold the wall of the cup shaped member against the cylinder wall.

In combination a piston operable in a cylinder, said piston having a circumferential recess opening through the end and periphery thereof, an annular cup shaped flexible member seated in said recess and encompassing a portion of the piston, a second annular and normally substantially iiat flexible member of a diameter considerably greater than the inside diameter of the cup shaped member and adapted to be seated in said recess, and encompassing a portion of the piston, a substantially flat rigid annular retaining member encompassing a portion of said piston and contacting the said second annular member,`said retainer member being of a diameter less than the diameter of the last said annular member and also of the cup shaped member, and fastening members passing through all of said members and engaging the piston whereby to draw said retainer and the saidznormally flat annular member into the cup shaped member to deflect the periphery of the said normally nat annular member. the diameter of said retainer member being greater than the normal inside diameter of the deflected portion of the second said member, whereby said deflected portion of the latter will be compressed to hold the wall of the cup shaped member against the cylinder wall. the periphery of the said retainer member being continuous and formed onoan arc extending in a direction lengthwise of the axis of the retainer member. whereby the portion of the second said member that is compressed will be spaced from the edge of the deflected portion thereof.
