The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in garments and more particularly to ladies undergarments of the type more generally known as brassires.

It is the object of the present invention to provide a new and novel construction of breast portion or cup for garments of the aforementioned type.

A feature of the invention resides in a novel construction of breast portion or cup for garments of the aforementioned type whereby the breasts of the wearer will be supported in an elevated or so-called uplifted position.

A further feature of the invention resides in a novel construction whereby the breast supporting portions will effect the desired moulding or shaping of the breasts without discomfort on the part of the wearer.

Still a further feature of the invention resides in a novel construction of the breast portion which permits of independent movement or action of separate areas thereof whereby to permit of proper or desired moulding of the breasts and provide adequate comfortable support therefor in any position or posture which the wearer of the garment may assume.

Still a further feature of the invention resides in a novel means for supporting the garment in position upon the body of the wearer without in any manner hindering or hampering the free and independent movement of the different areas thereof.

Other features of the invention relate to certain novel and improved constructions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the advantages of which will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.

The invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawing and the following detailed description of the constructions therein shown.

Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation illustrating a modified form of th invention. .In the accompanying drawing, the garment is designated A and, except for the bust portions which are designated B, may be of any desired type. v

The bust portions B are designed and formed to provide a cup shaped breast receiving and moulding pocket and extending along the lower edge of the breast portions B and forming the lower portion of the front section of the garment, there is a band Hi. This band I0 is preferably of greatest width at its central portion as for example, at the point designated II. From the point H, the upper edge of the band In curves in a downward direction providing relatively narrow ends I2 which are secured as at l3 to the end or'under arm sections l4.

The breast portions B of the garment are of substantially the same construction and the description of one will therefore suffice.

The two breast portions are secured together by a line of stitching designated [5 which forms the center of the front section of the garment, there being a breast portion upon each side of this line. T

Each breast portion is divided in its upper edge portion, into three areas, there being a central area It, an inner side area I! and an outer side area l8.

These areas l6, l7 and F8 are formed by cutting into the breast portion from the upper edge thereof along two diverging lines of cut designated l9 and 20 in the drawing. As herein illustrated, the outer line of out with respect to the center of the garment, and which is designated i9, is, it will be noted, of greater length than is the inner line of cut it, which construction results in the outer area l8 being larger than the inner area i1, However, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this construction and that the inner line of cut may be made longer than the outer line of cut or that both lines of cut may be of the same length depending upon the type of figure to be fitted.

The breast portions are held in breast supporting position by supporting tapes 2| and shoulder straps 22 which latter pass over the shoulders of the wearer and are secured to the back of the garment, not shown, in any desired manner.

The supporting tapes 2! are, as illustrated in detail in Figure 4, preferably formed from inelastic material and are folded backwardly upon themselves as at 23 and stitched as at 24 to the out edges of the fabric which forms the breast portions of the garment. Throughout a portion of their adjacent edges within the upper edge of the breast portion, these supporting tapes are secured together by a line of stitching such as 26 in Figure 4 of the drawing, which stitching, although it connects the side area I! and IS with the central area l6 throughout a portion of their adjacent edges, does not interfere with independent movement of the areas relatively to one another, since it provides a flexible connection between the areas at these points.

Those portions of the supporting tapes which bound or define the inner edges of the side areas I1 and i8, extend beyond the upper edge of the breast portion and have their free ends attached as at 28, to the apex or upper point of the central section l6 of the breast portion B.

The supporting tapes are of suh'icient length to provide a looped portion 30 and before their ends are attached at the point 28, heretofore mentioned, they are passed through rings or the like 32 carried by the front ends of the shoulder straps 22.

The foregoing construction provides a sliding connection between the supporting tapes and the shoulder straps the purpose of which will be hereinafter more specifically described,

By dividing the upper edge portion of the breast portion into three areas and by separately supporting these sections from the shoulder straps by means of supporting tapes which are attached to the shoulder straps by means of a sliding connection, it will be apparent that the three areas i6, I1 and i8 are capable of free and independent movement relatively to one another.

This free and independent movement of the areas l6, I1 and I8 permits of free adjustment of the garment to the breasts, thus eliminating all binding action along the upper edges of the breast portions of the garment since the upper edges of the breast portions thereof, by reason of their being divided instead of continuous, have no tendency to bind upon the breasts due to their elevation by the garment when the same is placed in wearing position.

The breast portions and the garment are so designed that when the garment is placed in position, the breasts of the wearer will be drawn inwardly and upwardly into position to fill the said breast supporting portions. I am aware that this in itself is not new. However, in the present garment, the upper edge portion of the breast portions being divided into areas which are capable of independent movement, permits of the reast portions adjusting themselves to that form which the breasts assume in their elevated p sition without exerting pressure or binding action upon the breasts and without wrinkling or drawing of the garment.

In the modified form of the invention, illustrated in Figure of the drawing, the supporting tapes are designated 48 and instead of being extended beyond the upper edge of the garmerit to provide a loop as in the heretofore described form of the invention, they are attached as at 42 and 43 to a tape M which is looped through the ring 32 of the shoulder strap 22, thus providing the sliding connection between the supporting tapes and the shoulder straps and providing independent support of the areas l6, I1 and I8 and permitting of free independent movement thereof.

In this form of the invention, instead of employing slits or lines of cuts such as 19 and 2B, which extend into the body of the breast portions, the upper edge portions of the breast portions are divided into the three areas i6, 11' and 18 by notching or similarly cutting into the upper edges thereof as indicated at 48 in Figure 5, at which points, the supporting tapes 4!) are attached to the upper edges of the breast portions of the garment.

From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and novel construction in garments of the breast supporting type in which the several recited objects are accomplished.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In a garment of the type described, a breast supporting cup or portion having its upper edge portion divided into a plurality of separate independent area's portions of which are unattached to each other, and means for supporting said areas upon the body of the wearer in such a manner as to permit of independent relative movement of said separate independent areas.

2. In a garment, a body portion including bust portions, each of which bust portions is divided in its upper edge portion into a substantially central area and side areas arranged one upon each side of the central area, said side areas being unattached to the central area along a portion of their adjacent edges and means for supporting said areas upon the body of a wearer to permit of independent movement of the central area and the side areas.

3. In a garment, a body portion including bust portions, each of which bust portions is divided in its upper edge into a substantially central area and side areas arranged one upon each side of the central area, said side areas being unattached to the central area along a portion of their adjacent edges whereby to permit of independent movement of the central area and the side areas, and means for supporting the garment upon the body of a wearer, said supporting means including shoulder straps, and supporting tapes, said supporting tapes defining the outer edges of the central area and the inner edges of the side areas and having sliding connection with the shoulder straps.

4. In a garment, a body portion including bust portions, each of which bust portions is divided in its upper edge into a substantially central area and side areas arranged one upon each side of the central area, said side areas being unattached to the central area along a portion of their adjacent edges whereby to permit of independent movement of the central area and the side areas, and means for supporting the garment upon the body of a wearer, said supporting means including shoulder straps and supporting tapes, said supporting tapes defining the outer edges of the central area and the inner edges of the side areas and attached to the upper edge of the central area and having looped portions thereof extending beyond the upper edge of the garment body, and shoulder straps having sliding connection with the looped portions of the supporting tapes.

In a garment, a body portion including bust portions, each of which bust portions is divided in its upper edge into a substantially central area and side areas arranged one upon each side of the central area, said side areas being unattached to the central area along a portion of their adjacent edges whereby to permit of independent movement of the central area and the side areas, and means for supporting the garment upon the body of a wearer, said supporting means includmg shoulder straps, and supporting tapes said supporting tapes being connected at one end to a common point to the upper edge of the central area and at their other ends to one of the side areas, and means for slidably connecting said supporting tapes tothe shoulder straps at points between their attachment to the central area and their respective side areas.

6. In a grament, a body portion including bust portions, each of which bust portions is divided in its upper edge into a substantially central area and side areas arranged one upon each side of the central area, said side areas being unattached to the central area along a portion of their adjacent edges and attached to the central area throughout the remainder of their adjacent side edges by a flexible connection whereby to permit of independent movement of the central area and the side areas, and means for supporting the garment upon the body of a wearer, said supporting means including shoulder straps, and supporting tapes, said supporting tapes defining the outer edges of the central area and the inner edges of the side areas and having sliding connection with the shoulder straps.
