BANANA HOOK Filed Nov. *20, 1939 INVENT R George 2 Attorney Patented June 10, 1941 means George Edmund Day. ()ttawa, (intarie, Canada Application November 20, 1939, Serial No. 305,4(il In Canada October 25, 1939 2 Claims.
This invention relates to hooks and particularly to a device of this type for hanging bananas.
An important object of this invention is to provide means of hanging a bunch of bananas without preventing circulation in the stock.
A further object of the invention is to prevent damage to the first, or first and second row of bananas.
A still further object of the invention is to provide inexpensive, durable and attractive means of displaying bananas.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a simple but efficient means of hooking the bananas and also a Swivel device so that the bananas may be turned at will.
Heretofore bananas have been hung by a rope or cord which usually destroys the rows of bananas above the cord and often, through cutting the circulation in the stock, destroys many of the bananas below the cord. In addition the bananas are often set in the front of a store where the sun shines on the bananas to the fore but never the back ones. With this device it will be a simple matter to turn the stock so that all bananas may be ripened evenly.
With the objects described and others which may appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which- Fig. l is a front elevation View of the device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a view of a modified form of the device.
Fig. 4 is a View of a modified form of the eyes.
Fig. 5 is a further modification of the eye or holding member.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views it will be seen the invention consists of a metal bar ill, preferably cylindrical. The said bar being formed into an eye I l, at one end and into a hook [2 at the opposite end. It will be seen the said hook is bent angularly from the shaft at E3, where the curvature of the hook commences from the said shaft. In addition it will be seen (in Fig. 1) the end of the rod is bent outward as at M, to form a lip to prevent the said end from inadvertently cutting the stock.
The eye i l is placed through a chain swivel i5, as means of hanging the device from a support and to provide facilities for turning the bunch of bananas at will.
A modified view of the device is seen in Fig. 3 wherein the swivel i5, is formed integral with the shaft.
A further modification is the use of a rubber tube or like material it, inserted over the hook to increase the efficiency of the device relative to the prevention of the stock being choked or cut.
To one versed in the handling of bananas it is apparent that extreme care must be taken to prevent contact of the bananas with any foreign object. As solid metal or wooden beams are particularly injurious, ropes are often used as means of hanging the bunches in warehouses and the like. With this in view the eye i l, is opened (Fig. 4) to form form a hook-line member which is slipped over the rope and held thus by the gravitational force of the bananas against the knotted end of the rope. To lift the bananas from tier to tier the said eye may be formed in the shape of a handle H, having an indented portion is, therein, as shown in Figure 5. The particular design of this type will materially increase the speed and efficiency of handling the bananas and decrease the waste due to inadvertent loss of control of the bananas while being handled.
It is believed that the construction and advantages of the structure shown may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in. conjunction with the accompanying drawing without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A hook for suspending bunches of bananas comprising a shank having one end reversely curved to form an open hook with the free end extending in an upward direction, said hook being bent at an obtuse angle to the axis of said shank.
2. A hook for suspending bunches of bananas comprising a shank having its upper end bent to form an eye, the lower end of said shank being reversely curved to form an open hook with the free end extending in an upward direction, said hook being bent at an obtuse angle to the axis of said and a rubber sleeve fitted on said hook.
GEORGE EDMUND DAY.
