UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM fr. PRINGLE, or NEW YORK, N. v.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING THE CORNERS 0F BOOKS, CARDS, AND PAPR.
sPEcIFIcATIoN frnnng part of Letters Patent No. 224,475, dated February 1o, 1880.
To alt/whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. PRINGLE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Machines for Guttin g the Corners of Books, Cards, and Paper, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the machine.
Fig. 2 is' a side elevation, lpartly in section.
jacent sides of which are grooved to serve as ways for the knife-holder D. To the lower end of the holder D is bolted or otherwise secured the knife E. The knife E may be con! caved, as shown in Fig. 4, to out a rounded corner, or convexed to cut a concaved corner,
or straightto cut a straight corner, as may be required.
To the upper end of the holder D is pivoted the'lower end of a bar ror link, F, the upper end of 'which is pivoted to the end of the curved arm G. The arm G is rigidly attached to the shaft H, which rocks -rbearin gs in the upper ends of for'vailljwprojecting arms I, formed upon or at c ed to the forward side of the upper ends of the uprights G. To one space is left between the adjacent ends of the guide-boards K for the corner of a pile of books or cards to project sujciently to be cut by the knife E as it is forced down by the movement of the lever J.
' Application filed October 20,1879.
or treadle N. The inner end of the treadle N is hinged tothe frame B, or to a bar attached to thesaid frame, and its outer end projects into such a position that it may be reached and operated by the operator with his foot to draw down the presser-bar L and' hold the pile of books or cards firmly while being cut. To the outer part of the treadle N is attached the end of a cord, O, which passes through guide-eyes P, or over guide-pulleys attached to the under side of the table A. To the other end of the cord O is attached a weight, Q, sufficient to raise the treadle N and bar L when the operator withdraws his foot from lthe treadle N, so that the pile of books or cards can be inserted and removed.
In the table A, at the rear side of the knife E, is formed an inclined chute or spout, R, so
that the scraps when cut off may slide to the floor or into a receiver placed table. A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new andY desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the table, the knife E, the guide-boards K, and the pressure-bar L, made thickest in the middle, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the pressure-bar L, of the rods M, the treadle N, the cord O, the eyes P, and the weight Q, as and for the purpose specified.
beneath the WILLIAM r.. PBINGLE.
