Application April/1s, 1940, serial No. 330,355'
11 Claims. (Cl. SiS-fdl) This invention relates to a device, sometimes called an edging machine, for applying a reenforcing or binding tape to the edges of sheet material, especially the edges of drawings and the like for reenforcing or binding the edges of the same, and particularly to an improved edgebinding device or machine of a portable construction.
Various types of devices and apparatus have been suggested and used for applying a binding or reenforcing tape, such as a gummed or other adhesive reenforcing tap-e, to the edges of sheet material, such as vellum drawings, documents, and the like for binding and reenforcing the edges of the same so as to reduce or entirely eliminate the danger of tearing the edges due to the excessive handling thereof which so often happens in the case of valuable drawings. While most of these edging machines or devices have been practical in their use and satisfactorily applied the reenforcing tape to the edges of the sheet, they possessed several disadvantages which made them unsatisfactory in certain respects.
Usually such devices or machines as have been heretofore suggested and used consisted of an excessive number of parts which, of course, made them bulky and difficult to use. Also, these devices were usually heavy and of an extremely rugged construction which necessitated them being permanently fixed in one position, thereby prohibiting the transference of the device for use from one point to another.
Furthermore, it was usually tedious and difficult to thread the reenforcing or binding tape properly bothinto and through the folding device which folded the tape around the edge of the sheet and between the pressing rolls which were usually employed for forcing the tape into engagement with the edges of the sheet material due to the fact that all the parts were firmly fixed in their respective positions on the device. Also, it was usually necessary to provide a separate device or machine for each size reenforcing tape to be applied in that there was no provision in such devices for adjusting the spool or reel on which the roll of reenforcing tape was disposed so as to properly position the particular width or size of reenforcing tape to be applied relative to the edge of the sheet material or for adjusting the tape relative to the thickness of the particular edge being bound, whereby the tape will be sure to be folded centrally thereof around the edge of the sheet. That is to say, generally only one size tape could be used on any particular device or machine without making numerous changes and adjustments therein.
In the device or machine of the present invention, the reenforcing or binding tape can be easily and quickly threaded into position for app lication to the edge of the sheet material and the device is adaptable for applying most any size tape it is desired to apply within certain limits, that is, it is-more universal in its use than any such device heretofore known.
Accordingly;` it is a more general object of the present invention to provide an improved device for applying reenforcing or binding tape to the edges of sheet material in which the reenforcing tape canv be readily and conveniently threaded into position thereinto and a device which can be used for any width reenforcing tape within certain limitsv that it is desired to apply.
Itis a more specic object of the invention to provide an improved edge-binding device or machine in which the folding and pressing parts thereof consist of a unit which is movably arranged sothat the reenforcing or binding tape to be applied can be initially threaded properly thereinto and' therethrough into position for application.
It i s another specic object of this invention to provide such a-device or machine in which the spool or reel for holding the reenforcing tape can be adjusted thereby insuring the folding of the tape centrallyv thereof around the edge of sheet material.
It is a further object of this invention to provide an improved edge-binding device which consists of a minimum number of parts, and one which is light and portable in its construction, thereby permitting it to be used in any desired position.
It is still another object of the present inventionl to provide an improved edge-binding device for sheet material which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, and, yet a device which will effectively and elciently apply the tape to the edgesof the sheet.
It is still a further object of this invention to provide an improved edge-binding device or machine Wherein the position of the means for pressing the tape into engagement with the edge of the sheet can be adjusted relative thereto, thereby insuring the pressing of the tape in its proper positionaround the edge of the sheet.
Various other objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent in the course of the following specication and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown, for the purpose of illustration, one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan of the improved edge-binding device of my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a section taken on line III- III of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a section taken on line IV-IV of Figure 2 `Figure 5 is an end elevation of my improved device; and,
Figure 6 is a section taken on line VI-VI of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved device or machine for reenforcing or binding the edges of sheet material of my invention comprises a base or frame 2V in the form of an angle iron having a longitudinally extending smooth-surfaced plate-like member 3 arranged thereon and attached thereto at the forward end thereof, preferably by means of machine screws 4. There is arranged in the lower flange of the base 2, a pair of clamping screws 5 which are disposed below and opposite the plate-like member 3 and cooperate therewith to securely clamp the device to the edge of a table or the like in position to be used. There is arranged on the forward end of the base 2, directly next to the plate-like member 3, an upwardly extending flange portion 6 which is adapted to act as a guide means for the sheet material vas it passes into and through the device.
A longitudinally extending leaf-like resilient member 'I is arranged on the inner side of the fiange portion 6 and preferably attached thereto by means of a machine screw 8 and extending under another machine screw 9 arranged rearwardly thereof thereon which forces the same yieldably against the smooth-surfaced top of the plate-like member 3 for holding the sheet material thereagainst as it passes through the device.
There is associated with the base 2, preferably cn the outer side of the flange portion 6, an outwardly extending horizontally disposed arm-lil e member IIJ having a vertically extending stud-like screw I2 securely arranged therein preferably at the outer end thereof. There is mounted on the screw I2, an internally threaded collar i3 having a wheel-like spool or reel I4 loosely mounted for rotation thereon and which is adapted to hold the roll of reenforcing or binding adhesive tape to be applied. The upper end of the collar I3 preferably has a knurled portion I5 thereon by which it is adapted to be rotated for adjusting the vertical position of the spool or reel I4 for a purpose hereinafter to be explained. There is arranged on the screw I2 above the collar I3 and next to the reel I4, preferably a relatively thin plate member I6, and there is positioned above the plate I6, a winged nut 4G for locking the plate member I6 and the collar I3 together with the spool or reel I4 carried thereby in any desired vertical position on the screw. There is mounted on the screw I2, below the collar I3 and the reel I4, another similar plate member 4 I, having a coil spring 42 arranged therebelow which is adapted to maintain the plate 4I yieldably in contact with the reel I 4 for a purpose to be described.
There is positioned on the same side of the base 2 as the reel I4, a movable head or housing member I'l which is pivotally attached to the base at I8 directly rearwardly of the flange portion 6 next to the plate-like member 3 by which it is supported. There is mounted on the pivotal connection I8 preferably a removable post-like screw member I8 which is adapted both to hold the housing member on its pivotal connection and to act as a guide for the reenforcing tape into the device.
There is rotatably mounted in a suitable bearing fixedly arranged within the housing member I'I adjacent the rear end thereof, a horizontally disposed stud shaft 2G having a gear 2I securely arranged thereon and ,positioned within the housing, an actuating or crank handle member 22 iixedly mounted thereon and positioned on the outer side of the housing, and an upper pressing roll 23 securely mounted thereon and positioned on the inner side of the housing beyond the cover plate 24 thereof and adapted to be disposed in operable position above the plate-dike member 3. There is arranged within the housing, a lever arm 25 having its inner end pivotally attached to a horizontal stud shaft 26 arranged therewith at the forward end thereof and there is fixedly arranged on the opposite free end of the lever arm 25, a stud shaft 21 having a gear 28 preferably loosely mounted for rotation thereon and which is positioned directly' below the gear 2| with which it meshes and a lower pressing roll 29 is loosely mounted for rotation on the inner end of the shaft 21 beyond the cover plate 24 below the plate-like member 3 and directly below the upper pressing roll 23 with which it is adapted to cooperate in a manner hereinafter to be described. The oppositely disposed pressing rolls 23 and 29 are preferably securely attached to the respective gears 2I and 28 by means of machine screws 30 in the present instance but it is preferable that they be made integral therewith.
Below the lever arm 25, there is arranged a coil spring 3I between the lower inner wall of the housing and the lever arm which is adapted to force the lever arm upwardly at all times about its pivotal connection or shaft 2S so as to maintain the gears 2I and 28 in mesh with each other and the pressing rolls 23 and 29 1n tangential contact with each other. That is, the coil spring 3| maintains the lower pressing roll 29 yieldably in tangential contact with the upper pressing roll 23. There is arranged on the outer side of the housing member I1, an actuating lever 32 having a handle portion 33 disposed next to the outer face of the housing and a cam member 34 securely mounted on the inner end thereof and positioned within the housing directly above the lever arm 25 with which it is adapted to cooperate as will be later described.
On the outer side of the cover plate 24 of the housing member Il directly above the plate-like member 3 anc'. directly forward of the pressing rolls 2l and 29, there is movably arranged a longitudinally extending wedge-like folding member 35 preferably formed of metallic sheet material having upper and lower flanges 36 converging toward the pressing rolls and terminating at a point immediately in front of the point of tangential contact thereof. The folding member 35 is pivotally attached to the housing at its forward end preferably by means of a pin 35gtr integrally carried thereby and extending through the cover plate into a hole arranged in the end of the stud shaft 26 so that the most rearwardly portion of the folding member is floatingly disposed in a vertical plane between the forward portions of the pressing rolls 23 and 29.
There is arranged in a flange in the lower portion of the base 2 directly below the inner side of the plate-like member 3, an adjustable screw 31, against which the cover plate 24 of the housing I'I is adapted to abut so as to properly position the folding member 35 and the pressing rolls 23 and 29 relative to the inner edge of the plate-like member 3 and the edge of the sheet material to be bound. The rearwardly inner edge of the plate-like member 3 is preferably cut away as at 38 so that the pressing rolls can be disposed therein directly opposite the end of the edge of the plate. There is preferably mounted on the outer end of the housing member I'I, a knife member 39 for cutting the reenforcing tape after any particular edge of the sheet material has been bound.
The device of my invention for reenforcing or binding the edges of sheet material functions in the following manner:
The device is rst clamped on to the edge of the table or other member at the particular place it is desired to use the same by means of the clamping screws 5. The plate member I6 together with the thumb nut 40 is removed from the screw I2 and the roll of reenforcing or binding adhesive tape to be used is placed upon the reel or spool I4 and the vertical position of the reel on the screw I2 is adjusted relative to the size or width of reenforcing or binding tape being used so that the center thereof is directly opposite the edge of the sheet material to be bound. 'Ihis adjustment is made by turning the collar I3 by means of the knurled portion I5 thereof so as to raise or lower the same, whichever direction it is desired to move the reel, which in turn moves the reel and roll of reenforcing tape carried thereby. After the roll of tape is properly positioned on the reel, the plate member I6 which is adapted to maintain the roll of tape on the reel, is positioned on the screw I2 next to the reel It and plate together with the reel is locked in such position by positioning the thumb screw 40 on the screw and tightening the same.
The head or housing member I1 is then moved outwardly away from the edge of the plate-like member 3 to an inoperable position as shown in the broken lines of Figure 1, of the drawings. The actuating lever 32 is then turned by means of the handle portion 33 thereof which rotates the cam member 34 carried thereby within the housing, forcing the lever arm 25 downwardly about its pivotal connection against the action of the coil spring 3| whereby the lower pressing roll 29 is moved away from and out of tangential contact with the upper pressing roll 23 so as to space the same apart from each other.
The reenforcing tape is then manually directed around the post-like screw I9 which is adapted to direct and guide the tape at all times to a point adjacent the edge of the plate-like member 3, and placed into and drawn through the folding member 35, which properly folds the tape centrally of the width thereof upon itself, and finally positioned between the pressing rolls 23 and 29. The actuating lever 32 is then again turned by means of the handle portion 33 thereof so that the cam member 3d carried thereby is moved to such a position that the pressure thereof against the lever arm 25 is released thereby permitting the same to be moved upwardly about its pivotal connection due to the action of the coil spring 3I so as to move the lower pressing roll 29 upwardly again to position in tangential contact with the upper pressing roll 23.
The reenforcing or binding tape is now properly positioned in the device for application to the edges of the sheet material. The head or housing member I'I is then moved about its pivotal connection toward the edge of the plate-like member 3 to its operable position adjacent the edge of the plate-like member 3 as shown in the full lines of Figure 1, of the drawings so as to abut against the adjustable screw 3l.
The edge portion of the drawing orY other sheet material to be reenforced or bound is then positioned on the forward end of the sheet supporting plate-like member 3 so that the edge thereof abuts against the upwardly extending flange portion 6 which is adapted to guide the edge of the drawing or sheet material into and through the device. The drawing or sheet material is then moved forwardly by its edge portion and introduced in under the leaf-like resilient member 1 which is adapted to hold the drawing or sheet material flat against the smooth-surfaced top portion of the plate-like member 3. The drawing or sheet material is progressively moved forwardly into the device maintaining the edge thereof against the guide flange portion B at all times until the edge passes into and through the folding member 6 into contact and between the folded reenforcing tape at a point directly in front of the tangential contact of the pressing rolls 23 and 29.
The pressing rolls are then set in rotative motion by turning the crank handle 22 through the action of the shaft 20 and the intermeshed gears 2| and 28. The edge portion of the drawing or sheet material is thereby drawn between the pressing rolls together with the reenforcing tape and the tape isfolded and securely pressed into engagement with the edge of the drawing or sheet material thereby. It will be understood that as the reenforcing tape is drawn through the folding member 6, it is folded around the edge of the sheet material thereby and securely pressed into engagement therewith by the pressing rolls as the sheet material passes continuously therethrough. It will be seen that the lower pressing roll 23 is forced upwardly toward the upper pressing roll 23 at all times due to the action of the coil spring 3I thereby tending to maintain the pressing rolls together under pressure so as to insure a pressing action of the same against the reenforcing tape at all times. After the edge portion of the drawing or sheet material has passed through the device, the reenforcing tape may be severed by means. of the knife member 39 arranged on the outer end of the housing. It is the purpose of the leaf-like resilient member 'I to straighten the edge of sheet material as well as to keep it perfectly flat against the plate-like member 3 so that the edge of the sheet is presented correctly to position between the folded tape whereby the tape is uniformly and evenly applied thereto.
It will be understood that the adjustable screw 3I against which the cover plate 26 of the housing member I6 abuts when the same is in its operable position may be properly adjusted at any time by moving the head or housing outwardly away from the edge of. the sheet material when it is seen that the reenforcing tape' is not being properly applied to the particular edge being bound.
It will be seen that the free or forward end of the folding member 35 in the device of my invention is iioatingly disposed and terminates at a point immediately in front of the tangential point of contact of the pressing rolls thereby insuring the pressing of the reenforcing tape rmly into engagement with the edge of the sheet material being bound immediately after the tape is folded thereby insuring an effective and improved bound edge. It will also be seen that coil spring 42 on the screw l2 forces the plate 4I against the bottom of the reel I4 at all times thereby tending to maintain a drag on the tape as it is drawn from the reel and keeping it taut as it is drawn therefrom.
While I have shown and described an embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that this embodiment is merely for the purpose of illustration and description and that Various other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention, as dened in the appended claims.
