Description

Patented June 3, 1941 MAGNETIZING APPARATUS Raymond W. Brown, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Western Electric Company, Incorporated, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application June 10, 1939, Serial No. 278,385
3 Claims.
This invention relates to magnetizing appa ratus and more particularly to a magnetizing apparatus provided with mechanism for breaking magnetized permanent magnets away from the magnetizer.
In magnetizing permanent magnet blanks made of steel having high remanence, it has heretofore been somewhat difficult to govern exactly the location of the poles of the permanent magnet due to the fact that in removing the magnet from the pole pieces of the magnetizer it is quite diflicult, if not impossible, to pull the magnet straight away from the magnetizer pole pieces manually and therefore the tendency is to slide the magnet off of. the pole pieces. This results in the pole of the permanent magnet which has been magnetized being slid, figuratively, to the side of the magnet structure.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a magnetizing apparatus for magnetizing permanent magnets wherein the poles of the permanent magnet may be accurately positioned.
In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the magnetizer is provided with a reciprocable platform or carriage, which is motor driven, and which is adapted to move a piece of steel to be magnetized into engagement with the pole pieces of a magnetizer and thereafter force the magnetized piece of steel straight away from K the pole pieces in a direction at right angles to the face of the pole pieces.
A better understanding of the invention may be had by reference to the following detailed description of one embodiment thereof, when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a magnetizer made in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the magnetizer, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2 in the direction of the arrows. i i
Referring to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate the same parts throughout the several views, a magnetizer made in accordance with the present invention may be mounted upon a table I provided with suitable supporting standards or legs, not shown, and comprises a magnetizing coil ll connected to a suitable source of electrical energy to energize it. The coil is mounted on the underside of the table H] by means of a pair of brackets l2l2 the table I0 and the brackets l2, of course, being made of non-magnetic material, such as brass,
and the coil II is provided with a pair of pole pieces l3--l3 which extend to the right and upwardly from the coil center, as shown in Fig 1, and terminate at a pair of pole shoes l4-I4, each of which is provided with an upwardly extending portion l5 upon which a magnet to be magnetized maybe placed. The upper ends of the pole pieces l3--I3 and the pole shoes l4--l4 may be suitably secured to each other and to the table 10 in any suitable manner. In the present embodiment of the invention, the shoes H are secured to the pole pieces l3 by means of machine screws Iii-l6 and the shoes l4l4 are fixed to the table II] by means of flat head machine screws lI-I I.
The table 10 is provided with an aperture 20, through which the portions l5-l5 of the pole shoes extend, and in which a shaft 2| is reciprocatable; The shaft 2| carries at its upper end a carriage 22, which is apertured as shown at 23 and 24 to permit the portions l5-4I5 of the pole shoes to extend through it when it is in its lowermost position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The shaft 2| is slidably mounted in a bearing 30 provided with a shouldered portion 3|, whereby it may be fixed to the underside of the table I0 by means of bolts 32. The bearing 30 serves to guide the shaft 2| so that its travel will always be vertical and when the plunger is reciprocated from the position shown, it will carry a magnet which had been received on the portions l5-| 5 of the pole shoes l4-l4 upwardly straight away from the portions I5|5.
Mounted on the underside of the table In is a motor 34 equipped with a suitable speed reducer 35 and adapted to drive an eccentric 36. The eccentric 36 has aconnecting rod 31 pivoted thereto and pivoted to the lower end of the shaft 2 whereby reciprocatory motion will be imparted to the shaft when the motor operates. The carriage 22 may be equipped with suitable guiding fingers, not shown, to hold the bar of magnet steel to be magnetized and in position thereon.
In the operation of the device, the motor 34 may be stopped with the carriage 22 in its uppermost position, as shown in dot and dash lines in Fig. 1, and a bar of magnet steel or any piece of magnet steel of any desired shape may be placed thereon and the motor operated to move the carriage 22 downwardly and after the magnet has been magnetized, the motor may be again started to move the magnet straight up off of the portions |5-l5 of the pole shoes I4I4. It may be desirable to operate the motor 34 continuously and 1 to drop unmagnetized magnet blanks on the carriage in position to be magnetized, whereupon the plunger 2| will move downwardly, permit the magnet blank to rest upon the upper edges of the portions l 5 of the pole shoes and thereafter move upwardly to pull the magnets straight away from the pole shoes.
Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been described herein, it will be understood that the invention is subject to many modifications and is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a magnetizer having an energizing coil and pole shoes associated with said coil, of means for accurately controlling the location of the poles in a blank to be magnetized comprising a table apertured to receive the extending ends of the pole pieces, a reciprocatable carriage having apertures therein through which the pole pieces may extend, and. means for reciprocating said carriage to move a blank to be magnetized into and out of engagement with the portions of the pole pieces extending through the carriage.
2. The combination with a magnetizer having I an energizing coil and pole shoes associated with said coil, of means for accurately controlling the location of the poles in a blank to be magnetized comprising a table apertured to receive the extending ends of the pole pieces, a reciprocatable carriage having apertures therein through which the pole pieces may extend, and motor driven means for reciprocating said carriage to move a blank to be magnetized into and out of engagement With the portions of the pole pieces extending through the carriage.
37 The combination with a magnetizer having an energizing coil and pole shoes associated with said coil, of means for accurately controlling the location of the poles in a blank to be magnetized comprising a table apertured to receive the extending ends of the pole pieces, a reciprocatable carriage having apertures therein through which the pole pieces may extend, and motor driven means for reciprocating said carriage to move a lank to be magnetized into and out of engagement with the portions of the pole pieces extending through the carriage including an eccentric, a connecting rod pivoted to said eccentric, a carriage supporting shaft pivotally connected to said connecting rod, and a bearing for guiding the shaft to cause the carriage to move in a plane at right angles to the faces of the pole shoes.
