My invention relates to means for non-rotatably securing the lower end of bolster means to the lower end of a bolster case in a spindle having a rotatable spindle blade, a bolster case adapted to be rigidly secured to a machine frame and iioating bolster means interposed between said case and' rotatable spindleblade.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel type of means for this purpose located at the lower end of a bolster and bolster case to secure the bolster against rotary creeping Within the case in use.
My invention is adapted for use in any type of a spindle whether it employ a single bolster or a plurality of nested holsters as shown in the joint pending application of. myself and Frederic N. Beed'e for Spindles and mountings or journals therefor, Ser. No. 114,997, led Deo. 9, 1936. It is particularly adapted for use where it is not possible or not desirable to provide a bolster lock near the upper end thereof, as in the devices shown in said application it is desirable to keep the bolster lock at the lower end of the bolster below the level of the oil within the case to positively maintain an unbroken surface on the outer surface of a bolster so that oil may be evenly fed upwardly between the outer surface of the bolster means and the bolster case or between an inner bolster and' an outer bolster.
A further object of my invention is to provide improvements in the specific means usually employed for securing the lower end of the bolster means against relative rotation within the bolster oase. Former types of means for this purpose have usually comprised pin looks. It has been found in practice, however, that any type of pin lock distorts the vibration at the foot of the bolster, particularly, at high speeds and heavy loads.
These and such other objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear will be best understood from a description of the accompanying drawings, which illustrate various embodiments of my invention.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional View taken through the center portion of a rotatable spindle and employing my invention for non-rotatably securing the lower end of an outer bolster against rotation within the bolster case, the spindle being shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the spindle, step bearing and whirl removed showing the bolster means being inserted within the bolster case to permit the interengaging means on the lower end of the outer bolster and case base plug to interlock during such insertion.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View taken along the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the oase base plug constructed in accordance with my invention employed in the embodiment shown in Figs. 1-3.

In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference generally indicate like parts throughout, 2U generally indicates a bolster case for receiving a rotatable spindle blade 22 therein. The bolster case 20 is adapted to be secured to the frame or other portion of the machine by the circumferential projection Ell to hold the bolster case 2B in proper position on the machine. TeX- tile spindles of this type are also provided with floating tubular bolster means 26 mounted within said case 2i) intermediatesaid case and spindle blade 22. I have shown in Figs. 5-8 my invention adapted for a standard type of spindle employing a single bolster 26 but my invention is peculiarly adapted for use with spindles employing a plurality of nested bolsters such as the inner bolster Zia and the outer bolster 26h as shown in the other figures.
The bolster means 25 whether it comprise a single bolster or plurality of nested bolsters 2E@ and 26h extends substantially to the top of the bolster case 2b and is usually loosely tted in the bolster case so as to have a floating action therein. The lower end of the spindle blade 22 usually terminates in the pointed tip 28 and extends downwardly within the step bearing bushing Sil mounted within said bolster means having a central hole 32 for loosely receiving the lower end of. said spindle blade 22 and a step 34 mounted Within said bushing hole 32 for mounting the lower tip 23 of the spindle blade 22 thereon. The step 34 as shown is mounted in the lower end of said bushing by means of the pin 36 p-rojecting through a diametric hole 33 in the step 34 and diametric holes in the lower end of the step bushing 3S.
As stated hitherto, pin locks for non-rotatably securing the lower end of the bolster within the bolster case as employed in the prior art have hindered free vibration at the foot of the spindle particularly at high speeds and heavy loads and have tended to work loose in practice and it is to an alternative type of means for this purpose that my invention relates as will be more `particularly described.
A suitable type of bearing means 4l! such as` inner race of the ball bearing 40 which is driven` by the usual whirl 42 which receives and drives the bobbin by the key 44 shown to receive a suitable channel in the interior ofY the bobbin for this purpose. The whirl l2 preferably extends around the bearing 4B and projects substantially downwardly to the projection 24 for retaining the bolster case on the machine frame.
As stated hitherto, my invention particularly relates to cooperating interengaging means on the lower endof the bolster means 2li and lower end of said case 20 for positively relatively nonrotatably securing said bolster means within the bolster case and in my preferred embodiment said means comprise a plurality of circumferentially extending radially spaced fingers 4S projecting axially upwardly within the outer portion of the lower end of said case and a plurality of complementary circumferentially extending radially spaced slots 48 in the lower end of said bolster means of greater width than said fingers for loosely receiving said fingers 45 therein to provide the necessary clearance for free vibration at the foot of the spindle, particularly desirable at high speeds and heavy loads heretofore referred to.
In my preferred embodiment, the fingers 46 project axially upwardly from the outer edge of a base plug 50 for forming the closed lower end of the case 2i) as is usual in the art and the plurality of complementary circumferentially extending ra-dially spaced slots 43 may be provided in the lower end of the single bolster 2E as shown in Figs. -8, or in the lower end of an outer bolster, one species therefor being shown in Figs'. 7 9 and another species therefor being shown in Figs. -12. The standard type of base plug has a solid cylindrical lower end provided with the annular circumferential groove 52 at the lower extremity thereof so that when said plug 5o is inserted within the lower end of the case, solder 54 may be inserted within said groove 52 as usualfor sealing the plug 59' within the lower end of the case v to close the lower end of the case. The base plug may be provided with the central circular ledge 53 for receiving the lower end of the step 34 and step bushing 3l! thereon so as to provide an oil circulating annular channel 56 between said central ledge and lingers 46.
The slots 48 in my preferred embodiment shown are preferably of a greater length than said fingers 46 to provide radial oil circulating holes 58 between the upper ends of said fingers 46 and upper ends of said slots 43. Where the base plug is employed for sealing the lower end of the case 20, it is obvious that the fingers 46 may project upwardly from the outer edge of said base plug as shown in Figs. 1-9.
I have shown in Figs. '7-10 one embodiment of means for securing the inner bolster against relative rotation within the bolster case 20 (the inner bolster 26a being suitably secured against relative rotative movement to the outer bolster 26D by a key 60 projecting radially from one of said bolsters within a spline 62 therefor in the other of said bolsters) and an alternative type of means for securing the inner bolster 25a withinthe case 2l) against relative rotation therein in FigsgvlU-lZ.
As-shown in Figs.v 7-9; the fingers $5 are continuedl a substantial distance radially inwardly thereof' so* that they may project within the slots 43a in the inner bolster 26a and also the slots 48h in'the'outer bolster 2Gb. Alternatively the fingers 46` may be radially inset from the ,periphery of the plug as shown in Figs. 10-12 thereby forming an annular shoulder 6'5' on said plug 50 exterior of said fingers 46A so that the lower end of the outer bolster 2Gb may rest on saidannular shoulder 65.
As stated hitherto, my improved type of means hitherto described is particularly desirable where a plurality ofL bolsters are employed so that the oil may beevenly fed axially upwardly of the outer surface of the outer or inner bolster as in the constructions shown in the aforesaid application.- Thus, inthe embodiment shown in Fig. 1, constructed in accordance with said invention, oil is circulated from the clearance 68 between the hole 32 in the stepbearing bushing 3.01and the lowerv end of the spindle 22, out
` through the diametric holes 10 in said step bearing-bushing 3U, underneath the lower end of the inner bolster radially outwards through the oil circulating channel 56', upwards between the inner bolster and fingers 46, then radially outwards through the radial oil circulating holes 58'formed between the upper end of the fingers 46T and upper end ofthe channels 43 in the outer bolster and axially upwardly of the outer surface ofthe outer bolster 26h. In similar fashion` doesthe oil circulate in the embodiments of my invention shown in Figs. 'l and 10, thev ,oil passing radially outwardly between the inner and outer bolsters through the radial holes l2 provided for thispurpose in the outer bolster. In alll instances the oil is fed over the upper surface ofthe outer and/or inner bolster toY be brought down over the bearing llto lubricate it to again flow back into the clearance 63 between the hole 32 in the step bearing bushing 30" andthe lower end of the spindle 22 thereby continuously. recirculating` in accordance with the principles offsaid invention.
Itis apparent therefore that I have provided a novel type of means for non-rotatably securing the lower endof. bolster. means to the lower end ofv a bolster case with the advantages describedabove.
It is understoodthat my invention is not limitedtto the specicr embodiments shown and that various deviationsmay be made therefrom' without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims,
What I claim is:

Means for non-rotatably securing the lower end of bolster means to the lower end of a bolster casein a spindle having a rotatable spindle blade, a bolster case adapted to be rigidly secured to a machine frame having a base plug contained within the lower end thereof, a iioatingrouter bolster within the bolster case, and a iloating inner bolster within said outer bolster, comprising a plurality of circumferentially extending radially spaced fingers projecting axially Aupwardly from the outer portion of said base plug, and a plurality of complementary circumferentially extending radially spaced slots in the lower end of isa douter bolster of greater width than said fingers for loosely receiving said fingers therein.

Means for non-rotatably securing the lower end of bolster means to the lower end of a bolster casein a spindle having a rotatable spindle blade, a bolster case adapted to be rigidly secured to a machine frame, a fioating outer bolster within the bolster case, and a floating inner bolster within said outer bolster, comprising a plurality of circumferentially extending radially spaced fingers extending axially upwardly within the outer portion of the lower end of the bolster case, and a plurality of complementary circumferentially extending radially spaced slots in the lower end of said outer bolster of greater width than said fingers for loosely receiving said ngers therein.

Means for non-rotatably securing the lower end of bolster means to the lower end of a bolster case in a spindle having a rotatable spindle blade, a bolster case adapted to be rigidly secured to a machine frame having a base plug contained within the lower end thereof, a floating outer bolster within the bolster case, and a floating inner bolster within said outer bolster, comprising a plurality of circumferentially extending radialliy spaced fingers projecting axially upwardly from the outer portion of said base plug, and a plurality of complementary circumferentially extending radially spaced slots in the lower end of said inner bolster of greater width than said fingers for loosely receiving said fingers therein.

Means for non-rotatably securing the lower I end of bolster means to the lower end of a bolster case in a spindle having a rotatable spindle blade, a bolster case adapted to be rigidly secured to a machine frame, a iioating outer bolster within the bolster case, and a floating inner bolster within said outer bolster, comprising a plurali-ty of circumferentially extending radially spaced fingers extending axially upwardly within the outer portion of the lower end of the bolster case, and a plurality of complementary circumferentially extending radially spaced slots in the lower end of said inner bolster of greater width than said fingers for loosely receiving said fingers therein.

Means for non-rotatably securing the lower end of bolster means -to the lower end of a bolster case in a spindle having a rotatable spindle blade, a bolster case adapted to be rigidly secured to a machine frame having a base plug contained within the lower end thereof, a floating outer bolster within the bolster case, and a floating inner bolster within said outer bolster, comprising a plurality of circumferentially extending radially spaced ngers projecting axially upwardly from the outer portion of said base plug, radially inset from the periphery thereof forming IlO an annular shoulder on said plug exterior thereof, and a plurality of complementary circumferentially extending radially spaced slots in the lower end of said inner bolster of greater width than said lingers for loosely receiving said fingers therein, the lower end of said outer bolster resting o-n said annular shoulder of said plug.

Means for non-rotatably securing :the lower end of bolster means to the lower end of a bolster casein a spindle having a rotatable spindle blade, a bolster case adapted to be rigidly secured to a machine frame, a floating outer bolster within the bolster case, and a iioating inner bolster within said outer bolster, comprising a plurality of circumferentially extending radially spaced fingers extending axially upwardly within the outer portion of the lower end of the bolster case, radially inset from the periphery thereof forming an annular shoulder exterior thereof, and a plurality of complementary circumferentially extending radially spaced slots in the lower end of said inner bolster of greater width than said fingers for loosely -receiving said fingers therein, the lower end of said outer bolster resting on said annular shoulder.

Means for non-rotatably securing the lower end of bolster means to the lower end of a bolster case in a spindle having a rotatable spindle blade, a bolster case adapted to be rigidly secured to a machine frame having a base plug contained within the lower end thereof, a floating outer bolster within the bolster case, and a floating inner bolster within said outer bolster, comprising a plurality of circumferentially extending radially spaced iingers projecting axially upwardly from the outer edge of said base plug, and extending for a substantial distance radially inwardly thereof, and a plurality of complementary circumferentially extending radially spaced slots in the lower end of both of said bolsters of greater width than said lingers for loosely receiving said iingers therein. y

Means for non-rotatably securing the lower end of bolster means to the lower end of a bolster case in a spindle having a rotatable spindle blade, a bolster case adapted to be rigidly secured to a machine frame, a floating outer bolster within the bolster case, and a iioating inner bolster within said outer bolster, comprising a plurality of circumferentially extending radially spaced fingers extending axially upwardly within the outer portion of the lower end of the bolster case, and extending for a substantial distance radially inwardly thereof, and a plurality of complementary circumferentially extending radially spaced slots in the lower end of bo-th of said bolsters of greater width thanV said fingers for loosely receiving said fingers therein.

A base plug adapted to be contained within the lower end of a tubular bolster case for a rotatable spindle comprising a solid member of the configuration of the lower end of the bolster case having a plurality of axially extending radially spaced fingers projecting upwardly from the outer edge thereof, and radially inset from the periphery thereof forming an annular shoulder on said plug exterior thereof.

A base plug adapted to be contained within the lower end of a tubular bolster case for a rotatable spindle comprising a solid member of the configuration of the lower end of the bolster case having a plurality of axially extending radially spaced fingers projecting` upwardly from the outer edge thereof, and extending for a substantial distance radially inwardly thereof.

Means for non-rotatably securingthe lower end' of bolster meansto the lower end' of a bolster casein a spindle having a rotatable spindleblade, a bolster case adapted to be rigidly secured to a machine frame having a base plug contained within the lower end thereof, a floating outer bolster within the bolster case, and a floating inner bolster within said outer bolster, comprising a plurality of circumferentially extending' radially spaced ngers projecting axially upwardly' from the outer portion of said base plug, and a plurality of complementary circumferentially extending.
