Description

J. H. WILGGX".
. Inkstand.
` No. 224,261. v Patented Feb. 3, 1880.,
nNEssEs I Y f6,
.ATTORNEY To all whom it may concern f Be it known that I,`JULITUS H. WLLCOX, of` Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and VUNITED. STATES @PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUs II. wILcOx,'OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA.
lNKSTAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,261, dated February 3, 1880.
l Application led November 28, 1879.
State of Virginia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Inkstands, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the drawings annexed to this specification, and the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in
which- Figure v1 represents a perspective view of the casing or stand. Fig. 2 is acentral vertical section, showing `the Siphon-shaped tube in place.
This invention has relation to ink-bottles or inkstands; and itconsists in the construction and novel arrangement of a Siphon-tube having an upwardly-turned end provided `with an` expansion to form a pen-dip, and in connection therewith an elastic compressible cap, whereof the air-space communicates with the interior of the bottle or stand, all as hereinafter shown and described.
It also consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a case or stand for the reception ot' a bottle or other ink-vessel having suit; able clamps and attachments, as hereinafter specified. y
In the accompanyingdrawings, the letter A designates an ink-bottle or inkstand, and B indicates an elastic compressi ble cap or bulb made of rubber, which is attached 4to the Open top vor neck of the vessel or bottle, or toa cork or stopper having an opening through which' the air in the cap communicates with that in the bottle. C represents a Siphon-shaped tube, one leg of which passes through the cap or stopper into the bottle down nearly to the bottom, while the other leg, a, of the tube, which extends downward outside the bottle, is bent upward at its lower end, b, terminating. in an expanded portion, c, which forms the pen-dip, and which should be provided with an inward reverselybent flange, d, to prevent spilling, should the bottle by accident be overturned. When Vthe cap and tube ar'e properly adjusted the ink will not rise in the latter until the cap is compressed, and then it will at'once-ow through the tube into the pen-dip.
In order to hold the cap in the compressed `state various devices may be employed, the
simplest being a catch or, connection, e, attached to the top of the cap, and capable of being connected to a band around the bottle `or other attachment to hold the cap in a'bent position.` Whentheink is not in use the connection is unfastened to release the cap, which expands, and, relieving the pressure in the bottle, allows the ink in the tube to run back.
. D represents a stand or case, which receives the ink bottle or vessel when necessary or desirable. This case is provided with set-screws for other fastenings to secure the'bottle, and may have projections g on the outside, forming a pen-rack.
The connection e from the cap may be attached to a clamp or catch on the case, and, if desired, the connection e may be made adjustable by means of a notched catch or knotted cord, or otherwise.
Having describedv this invention, what I claim, and desire to .secure by Letters Patent,
l. The siphon shaped ink tube C, having the upwardly-bent end b, terminating in an expanded pen-dip, c, substantially as specified.
2. The siphon shaped ink tube C, having the upwardly-bent end b, terminating in an expanded pen-dip, c, having a reversed inwardlyhenttlange, d, substantially as speciiied.
' 3. The combination, with thesiphon-shaped ink-tube having the upwardly-bent end b, terminating in a pen-dip, c, of the elastic cornpressible cap or bulb B and the ink stand or bottle, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with an ink stand or bottle and the Siphon-shaped tube C, terminat Aing in. a pen-dip, c, ot' the air-pressure cap or bulb B, the caseD,and the catches or fastenings for holding said cap Or bulb compressed,
substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have vhereunto signed my name in the presence Ot' two witnesses.
