This invention relates to locks for doors or other similar closures.
It is an object of the invention to provide a door lock constructed, substantially in its en- Itirety, of die-formed sheet metal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock structure which may be mounted in a door merely by providing the latter with a pair of axially intersecting bored holes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simplified door lock of the type in which depression of a push-button, contained in one of the knobs, will operate mechanism fo-r securing the lock bolt against retraction.

The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, which, together with the foregoing, will be specically brought out in the detailed description of the invention hereunto annexed. It is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific form thereof herein shown and described as various other embodiments thereof may be employed Within the scope of the appended claims.

The door lock of my invention is designed for use in a wooden door I4 provided with a circular aperture I6, bored completely through the door from the inner side I'I to the outer side I8 thereoi and spaced inwardly from the edge I9 thereof, and with a bore 2| positioned medially of and .paralleling the sides of the door and extending from the edge I9 to normally intersect the aperture I6.
Positioned in and concentric with the aperture I6 is a tubular lock body 22 having an opening 23 in the wall thereof concentric with the axis 'of the bore 2| and in which is positioned a pair of axially spaced plates 24 and 2E. The plates 24 and 26 may be secured to the body 22 in any accepted manner but are preferably provided with peripheral notches 2'I into which are pressed tabs 28 struck inwardly from the wall of the lock body. Each tab 28 is provided with integral ears 29 which extend beyond the notches 2l over the opposite sides of the plates. The engagement of the rtabs 28 in the notches 21 secures the plates and the lock body together against relative rotational motion while the ears 29 prevent displacement of the plates relative to each other or axially of the lock body. The plate 24 is provided with a central bored hub 3l and the plate 26 with a concentric' opening 32 having a pair of .diametrically opposed periph,- eral notches 33, and both plates are provided, adjacent their peripheral edges, with two or more internally threaded tubular bosses 34. Circular escutcheon plates 36, having peripherally flanged central openings 31 axially alined with the opening I6, are each provided with radially spaced holes through which screws 38, having their inner threaded ends engaged in the plate bosses 34, pass so as to secure the escutcheon plates to the opposite sides of the door.
Journaled in the hub 3| of the plate 24, and
extending concentrically through the escutcheon plate openings 39 and the opening 32 of the plate 26, is a tubular knob shaft 39, best shown in Figure 9, having a .pair of diametrically opposed longitudinally extending slots 4| which open at one end of .fthe shaft and which terminate at a point substantially medially of the ends thereof. Both slots 4|, at their inner ends, are provided with enlarged rectangular recesses 42 and Vone of the slots, at the point where ift intersects the end of the shaft, is provided with a notch 43 which is slightly wider than the slot 4|. The other end of the shaft 39 is provided with an axially extending opening 44 in which lies an integral portion of the tube wall forming a relatively slender spring arm 46 having at its distal end an outwardly-turned spur 41 which projects slightly beyond the periphery of the shaft and which serves as a key as will presently be described. A retractor cam 48 extends transaxially of the knob shaft through the recesses 42 and is attached, by rivets 49, to a cup-shaped retainer which is positioned within the knob shaft. The opposite endsV of the retractor cam extend radially of and for a considerable distance beyond the periphery of the shaft. The positioning of the retractor cam in the recesses 42 and the connection thereof with the retainer 5| prevents any movement of the cam either radially or axially of the knob shaft. Telescopng the end of the knob shaft, opposite to that in which the slort 4| is formed, and abuttingv against the end of the hub 3|, is an extension tube 52 having in the wall thereof an aperture 53 into which the spur 41 of the lmob shaft may be snapped so as to releasably key the latter shaft and the extension tube 52 together as an integral unit. Detachment of the extension tube from the knob shaft may be accomplished by inserting aslender rody or screw driver in the aperture 53 and depressing the lug 41 below the inner periphery of the extension tube whereupon fthe latter may be withdrawn axially ,from the end of the knob shaft. The outer end of the extension tube is provided with a concave keyway 54 in which is engaged the convex portion 55` of a corresponding keyway 56 formed at one end of a tubular bushing 51 which telescopes over the extension tube 52 and has its inner end journaled in the bore 31 of the escutcheon plate 35. The extension'tube and. the bushing 51 are thus secured together against relative rotation. The extension tube has therein an aperture 58 into which a tab 59 struck inwardly from the wall of the bushing 51 is pressed so that the latter tube and the extension tube are secured together against relative axial movement. 'I'he extension tube lis provided with an velongated aperture 6| which registers with a corresponding opening 62, in the bushing 51, which has therein a slender spring arm 63 having at its distal end anoutwardly-turned spur 64 which enters an aperture 66 formed in the tubular hub 61 of a knob 68. A protuberance 69, pressed inwardly bfrom the wall of the knob `hub 61, enters the keyway 56 and secures the knob and the bushing 51 together for rotary motion. The engagement of the spur 64 in the knob aperture 66 secures the knob and bushing together against relative axial displacement.
l In the bore 2|, as is best shown in Figure 8, is aktubular bolt housing 1| having at its outer end a radially extending flange 12, which lies at the bottom of a recess 13 formed in the edge of the door, and at its inner end a pair of integral U-shaped guides 14 which project through the opening 23 in ,the side of the lock body and which extend into the latter nearly to its axis. A pair of angle clips 16, secured to the plate 26 by rivets 11, engage the guides 14 and prevent relative lateral spreading thereof. In the channels of the guides 14 is slidablymounted a crosshead 18, having at one end a pair of horizontal arms 19, which extend to points adjacent one side of the retractor cam 48, and at the other end a pair of ears 8| which support a pivot pin 82 passing transversely through one end of the bolt 83. The other end of the bolt 83 is provided with screw threads 84 engaged in mating threads 86 formed in an axial bore provided in a bolt head 81. A coil spring 88 has one end thereof seated in a peripheral notch 89, formed at one end of the bolt head, and the other end thereof seated in a circular groove 9| formed in a plate 92 which is pressed into the bolt housing 1|. The plate 92 has a central opening through which the bolt 83 slidably passes. The bolt head 81 has the usual D-shaped cross-sectional form and is axially slidable in a corresponding D-shaped aperture formed in a plate 93 which is positioned in the recess 13 overlying the flange 12. Wood screws 94, which pass through suitable alined apertures formed in the plate 93 and the flange 12, are screwed into the door I9 and hold the plate 93 and the bolt housing 1| in place. It will be seen that when the knob 68 is manually rotated in either direction, the retractor cam 48 will engage one of the arms 19 and will move the crosshead 18, againstthe tension of the spring 88, to retract the bolt head 81. The spring 88, when the knob :is released, will return the bolt head to its norm-al extended. position and the retractor cam 48 to its normal perpendicular position as shown in Figure 8. The crosshead is provided with a pair of notches 98 which, when the bolt head 81 is fully extended, are alined with the notches 33 of the plate 26, and a plate 91, secured to the plate 26 by rivets 98, is provided with rimmed horizontal anges 99 forming, in conjunction with the face of the plate 26, channel shaped guides into which the. crosshead may pass when the latter is moved by the retractor cam.
Means is provided, operative from the side of the v door opposite the knob 68, for moving .the crosshead 18 to retract the bolt head 81. Mounted ,on and concentric with the slotted end of the knob shaft 39 isa bushing |0| over which is telescoped an extension tube |02, Vshown in detail in Figures 11 to 13inclusive, having at one end a transaxial slot |03 through which ascrew |84' passes, Figure 3, and is tapped into receiving holes formed in the bushing |0| and also in the knob shaft 39. The slot |03 extends over about one-fourth of the circumference of the extension tube. The screw |04 .secures fthe knob shaft 39, the bushing |0| and the extension tube |02 .together against relative axial movement but permits the extension tube to be rotated `relative rto the knob shaft within the limits of the slot |03 which is. approximately degrees. The vother end of the extension rtube is provided with a. depressed keyway |06, a relatively .long transaxial tab |01 which is rolled at its extreme end to form a loop |08, a latch tab |09 which is struck radially inwardly from the wall of the tube, and an axially parallel opening I in whichis disposed an integral relatively slender spring arm ||2 provided with an outwardly direcfted lug H3. The extension tube is journaled in the apertured hub 31 of a second escuteheon plate 36 which is secured by screws 4 to the side of the door; the threaded ends of the screws being engaged in the threaded bosses 34 of the plate 26. A knob 6 is provided, having its tubular hub ||1 telescoped over the extension tube |02,. the hub being provided with a protuberance H8, which enters the keyway |06 and secures the hub and extension tube for rotational movementI together, and with an apertube ||9 into which the lug I I3 may be snapped to secure the hub and extension tube together against relative axial movement. The knob is also provided with a concentric opening |2|. A coiled torsion spring |22, which is positioned within the extension tube |02, has one end engaged in the loop |08 and the other end anchored in a socket which is drilled into the end surface of the wall of the knob shaft 39. It Will be seen that when the knob ||6 is manually rotated, a rotational force will be transmitted through the spring |22 to the knob shaft thereby causing the latter to be rotated and move the retractor cam 48 to retract the bolt head 81. It is impossible rto impress an excessive torsional strain on the spring |22 since, when the knob hub ||1 rotates a certain degree relative t0 the extension tube, an end of the slot |03 will engage the screw |04 so as to effect a positive driving connection between the knob and the extension tube.
Means is provided for locking the knob shaft 39 against rotation so as to prevent retraction of the bolt head 81 and thus bar the door. Concentric with and extending into the slotted end of the knob shaft 39 is a ferrule |23 having a radially extending tab |24, which is engaged in the notch 43 at the end of the knob shaft, and an end wall |26 having a rectangular aperture |21 extending therethrough. Concentric With the ferrule |23, and extending for slidable movement through the aperture |21, is a pair of parallel metal strips forming a push rod |28, the strips being secured together at spaced intervals, by rivets |29, having at one end a T-shaped head, whose ends project transversely through the slot 4| and radially beyond the periphery of the knob shaft to form dogging keys |3|, and having, as is best shown in Figure 7, portions |32 intermediate their ends which are relatively spaced so as to form a loop |33. The extreme outer end of the push rod is provided with transverse notches |34 which receive the end flanges |36 of a diametrically split head- |31 which is pressed into a cup-shaped pushbutton |38 extending through and slidable in the knob aperture |2|. A coil spring |39 encircling the pushrod |28 and positioned within the flerrule |23 engages, at one end, the wall |26 of the' ferrule and, at the other end, a cup 4| engaging a pair of clips |42' which are secured to the pushrod by one of the rivets |29. It will be seen, by successively examining Figures 1 and 4, that, when the pushbutton |38 is manually depressed, the pushrod |28 will be moved longitudinally so as to move the dogging keys |3| into the notches 33 and 96 of the plate 26 and the crosshead 1B respectively. Since the position of the plate 26 is fixed and since the dogging keys |3| extend through the notches of this fixed element and enter the registered notches of the relatively movable crosshead, it will be seen that both the crosshead and the knob shaft 39 will be locked against movement. Of course, in the absence of means for retaining the dogging keys |3| in engagement with the notches 33 and 96, when manual pressure is removed from the pushbutton |38, the compressed spring |39 will expand to draw the dogging keys out of the notches and unlock the knob shaft and the crosshead.
Means is provided for latching the dogging keys in engagement with the notches 33 and 96 so as to lock the door and means is also p-rovided, operative upon rotational 'movement of one of the knobs', for releasing the dogging keys so as to unlock the door. Positioned in the loop |33 of the pushrod |28 is a latch lever |43 having an apertured ear |44 projecting from one side thereof, through which a rivet forming a pivot pin |46 passes, a downwardly extending finger |41 and a T-shaped head |48 which rests on the upper surface of the strips forming the pushrod. The T-shaped head downward pivotal movement of the latch lever beyond a predetermined point but permits unlimited upward movement thereof. A leaf spring |49 which has an end tab resting in a notch |5| formed in the upper surface of the pushrod, and which is anchored in placeA by an extension member |52 of one of the clips |42, has its other or free end resting on top of the head |48 so as to resiliently resist upward pivotal movement of the latching lever and to urge the head |48 into engagement with the pushrod. AThe finger |41 of the latching lever and the latch tab |09 of the extension tube |02 are so relatively positioned that the latter is in the path of movement of the finger |41 as the pushrod is moved longitudinally.` When the pushbutton is depressed, in the. act of locking the door, the finger |41, as is shown in Figure 2, will contact the latch tab |09 and will ride over and snap behind the latter, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, when the dogging keys |3| reach 'their positions in full engagement in the notchesA 33 and 96. The dogging keys are thus held in engagement with the notches and the door is securely locked against being opened by rotation of the outer knob 68. When it is desired to unlock the door, the ini ner or pushbutton knob I6 is grasped and manually rotated in either direction. This, as is shown in Figure 6, causes the latch tab |09, .as the extension tube |02 is rotated by the knob, to move to either side from in front ofthe finger |41 thus freeing the latter and permitting the pushrod, under .pressure of the spring |39, to return to its normal position wherein the pushbutton |38 is extended and the dogging keys |3| are out of engagement with the notches 33 and 96.
A feature of convenience present in the lock of my invention is that the bolt head 81 may, by depressing the pushbutton |38, be locked in extended position. It is thus impossible for anyone to jimmy the lock, as may be done with existing lock structures, by inserting a tool into the gap between the edge of the door and its frame so as to forcibly retract the lock bolt. Securing of the lock bolt in extended position also makes it possible to prevent an open door being accidently slammed shut such as by a draft.
Having thus described my invention in detail, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. A lock comprising a lock body having a fixed element therein, a tubular knob shaft mounted fory rotation in saidlock body, said knob shaft having a longitudinally extending slot therein, a bolt housing extending radially |48 prevents into and from said'lock body, a bolt structure including a crosshead slidably mounted in said bolt housing adjacent and movable relative to said iixed element, a push rod in and extending axially of saidI knob shaft, said push rod having a `clogging key thereon extending through the knob shaft slot and projecting radially beyond the periphery of the knob shaft, means connected with said push rod and extending beyond an end of said knob shaft for moving said push rod axially of the knob shaft and the dogging key into engagement with the fixed element and crosshead so as to secure the fixed element and crosshead together against relative movement, a latch lever carried by said push rod and engageable .with a portion of said knob shaft, when the push rod is moved, for connecting the push rod and knob shaft together so as to retain the dogging key in engagement with the xed element andthe crosshead, and means associated with said knob shaft for releasing the engagement therewith of said latch lever,
2. AA lock comprising a lock body having a fixed element therein, a tubular knob shaft mounted for rotation in said lock body, said knob shaft having a. longitudinally extending slot therein, a bolt housing extending radially into and from said lock body, a bolt structure including a crosshead slidably mounted in said bolt housing adjacent and movable relative to said fixed element, a push rod in and extending axially of said knob shaft, said push rod having a clogging key thereon extending through the knob shaft slot and projecting radially beyond the periphery of the knob shaft, means connected with said push rod and extending beyond an end of said knob shaft for moving said push rod axially of the knob shaft and the clogging key into engagement With the fixed` element and crosshead so as to secure the xed element and crosshead together lagainst relative movement, an extension tube concentric with and mounted for rotational movement on and with respect to said knob shaft, a latch lug extending radially from said extension tube, a latch lever pivotally mounted on and extending from said push rod and toward said latch lug, said latch lever, When the push rod is moved axially of the knob shaft, being adapted to ride over said latch lug and to snap into engagement With a surface of the latterso as to maintain the clogging key in engagement Awith the xed elementaand the crosshead, and a knob secured -to said extension tube for rotating said extension tube so as to move the latch lug from engagement with the latching lever.
3. A lock comprising a tubular lock body having therein an opening in its side wall and a fixed Vplate therein -provided with a lcentral opening having a peripheral lock notch, a tubular knob shaft mounted for rotation in said lock body and extending concentrically through said plate opening, said knob shaft having therein a longitudinally extending slot, a tubul-ar bolt housing positioned axially perpendicular to said lock body, said bolt housing having thereon a pair of channel shaped guide extensions projecting through said side wall opening of the lock body and entering, said lock body, a bolt structure in said bolt housing including a crosshead slidably mounted in said channel shaped guide extensions and movable diametrically across said plate opening, said crosshead having therein a lock notch registrable with the lock notch of the plate openinga push rod in and extending axially of said knob shaft, said push rod having a clogging key CII thereon extending through the knob shaft slot and projecting radially beyond the periphery of the knob shaft, a push button connected with an end of said push rod for moving the push rod axially of the knob shaft and the clogging key into engagement with the lock notches of the xed plate andthe -crosshead so as to secure the fixed plate vand the crosshead together against relative movement, an extension tube concentric with and Vmounted for rotational movement on and with respect to said knob shaft, a l-atch lug extending radially from said extension tube, a latch lever pivotally mounted on and extending from said push rodand toward said latch lug, said latch lever, when the push rod is moved axially of the knob shaft, being adapted to ride over said latch lug and to snap into engagement with a surfaceof the latter so as to maintain the clogging key inengagement in the lock notches of the fixed plate` and the crosshead, and a knob secured to said extension tube for rotating said extension tube soas to move the latch lug from engagement with the latching lever to permit withdrawal of the dogging key from engagement in the lock notches of the fixed plate and the crosshead.
4. `A lock .comprising a tubular lock body having affixed plate therein provided with a central opening vhaving a peripheral lock notch, a tubular 'knob shaft mounted for rotation in said lock body and extending concentrically through said plate opening, said knob shaft having therein a longitudinally extending slot, la tubular bolt housing positioned .axially perpendicular to said lock body, said bolt housing having thereon a pair of channel shaped guide extensions projecting through said side wall opening of the lock body and entering said lock body, a bolt structure in said bolt housing including a crosshead slidably mounted in said channel shaped guide extensions andv movable diametrically across said plate opening, said crosshead having therein a lock notch registrable with the lock notch of the plate opening, a push rod in and extending axially of said knob shaft, said push rod having a dogging key thereon extending through the knob shaft slot and projecting vradially beyond the periphery of the knob shaft, .a push button connected with an end of said push rod for moving the push rod axially of the knob shaft and the flogging key into engagement with the lock notches of the .xed plate and the crosshead so as to secure the fixed plate and the crosshead together against relative movement, an extension tube concentric `With and mounted for rotational movement on and with respect to said knob shaft, a torsion spring connected at its respective ends to said extension tube and to said knob shaft, a latch lug extending radially from said extension tube, a latch lever pivotally mounted on and extending from said push rod and toward said latch lug, a leaf spring mounted on said push rod and engaging saidlatch lever for resiliently resisting plvotal movement of the latch lever, said latch lever, when the push rod is moved axially of the knob shaft, being adapted to ride over said latch lug and to be snapped, by the said leaf spring, into engagement with a surface of the latch lug so as to maint-ain the dogging key in engagement in the lock notches of the xed plate and the crosshead, and a knob secured to said extension tube for rotating said extension tube so as to move the latch lug from engagement with the latching lever to permit withdrawal of the dogging key from engagement in the lock notches of the xed plate andthe crosshead.
5. A lock comprising a lock body having a fixed element therein, atubular knob shaft mounted for rotation in said lock body and comprising a plurality of separate sections, one section of said knob shaft having a longitudinally extending guide therein, a bolt housing extending radially into and from said lock body, a bolt structure including a crosshead slidably mounted in said bolt housing adjacent and movable relative to said fixed element, a push rod in and extending axially of said knob shaft, said push rod having a dogging key thereon engaging the guide, and projecting radially beyond the periphery, of said one section of the knob shaft, means connected with said push rod for moving said push rod axially of the knob shaft and the dogging key into engagement with the xed element and the crosshead so as to secure the fixed element and crosshead together against relative movement, a latch lug carried by and extending radially from another section of said knob shaft, a latch lever mounted for movement on and relative to said push rod and extending toward said latch lug, said latch lever, When the push rod is moved axially of the knob shaft, being adapted to pass over and into latched engagement with the latch lug so as to maintain the dogging key in engagement with the fixed element and the crosshead, and means for rotating said other section of the knob shaft so as to relatively displace the latch lever and latch dog and thereby release the engagement thereof.
6. A lock comprising a lock body having a fixed element therein, a tubular knob shaft mounted for rotation in said lock body and comprising a plurality of of separate sections, one section of said knob shaft having a longitudinally extending guide therein, a bolt housing extending radially into and from said lock body, a bolt structure including a crosshead slidably mounted in said bolt housing adjacent and movable relative to said fixed element, a push rod in and extending axally of said knob shaft, said push rod having a dogging key thereon engaging the guide, and projecting radially beyond the periphery, of said one section of the knob shaft, means connected with said push rod for moving said push rod axially of the knob shaft and the dogging key into engagement with the fixed element and the crosshead so as to secure the fixed element and crosshead together against relative movement, a latch lug carried by and extending radially from another section of said knob shaft, a latch lever mounted for movement .on and relative to said push rod and extending toward said latch lug, said latch lever being in alinement, axially of the knob shaft, With the latch lug and, when the push rod is moved -axially o-f the knob shaft, being adapted to pass over and into latched engagement with said latch lug so as to maintain the dogging key in engagement with the fixed element and the crosshead, means for rotating said other section of the knob shaft so as to relatively rotationally displace the latch lever and the latch lug and thereby release the engagement thereof, and means resiliently connecting said sections of the knob shaft together.
7. A lock comprisising a lock body having a xed element therein, a tubular knob shaft mounted for rotation in said lock body and comprising a plurality of separate sections, one section of said knob shaft having a longitudinally extending guide therein, a bolt housing extending radially into and from said lock body, a bolt structure including a crosshead slidably mounted in said bolt housing adjacent and movable relative to said xed element, a push rod in and extending axially of said knob shaft, said push rod having a dogging key thereon engaging the guide, and projecting radially beyond the periphery, of said one section of the knob shaft, means connected with said push rod for moving said push rod axially of the knob shaft and the dogging key into engagement with the fixed element and the crosshead so as to secure the fixed'element and crosshead together against relative movement, a latch lug carried by and extending radially from: another section of said knob shaft, a latch lever mounted for movement on and relative to said push rod and extening toward said latch lug, said latch lever being in alinement, axially of the knob shaft, with the latch lug and, when the push rod is moved axially of the knob shaft, being adapted to pass over and into latched engagement with said latch lug so as to maintain the dogging key in engagement with the fixed element and the crosshead, means for rotating said other section of the knob shaft so as to relatively rotationally displace the latch lever and the latch lug and thereby release the engagement thereof, and a spring interposed between said sections of the knob shaft for resiliently connecting said sections ofthe knob shaft together and for resiliently maintaining the alinement of said latch lug and said latch lever.
