SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,247, dated. February 3, 1880.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JAMES H. TEVIS, of Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills; and I do hereby declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apcrank-shaft backward and turn the vane, and
also in thedevices for turning'the vane at will, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The turn-table O is provided with .suitable boxes or hearings to a, in which is placed the wind-wheel shaft D, carrying at its outer end the wiud-wheel E, of any suitable construction. The shaft D is movable longitudinally in its boxes era, and is formed with an elongated crank, on which is placed a box, b, for the attachment'of the pitman to pass through the tubular bearing B and connect by a swivel with the pump-rod.

This wheel is held in line with the wind-wheel shaft by means of a cord or chain, 61, and weight H, the cord or chain being attached to the inner end of the vane and passing over a pulley, t, which is mounted in a post, It, swiveled in the end of an arm, I, attached to the turn-table, as shown.

is also slotted, and passes over the upper end of a lever, K, pivoted at its lower end to the side of the turn-table.
The weight H, holding the vane G in line with theshaft D, presses the lever K against the end of said shaft, holding the wind-wheel forward. When the wind increases and the windpressure on the face of the wheel is greater than the controlling-weight, it forces the crank-shaft back against the perpendicular lever K, and turns the same on its pivot. This, through the medium of the elbow-lever J, causes the vane G to turn, and as this vane always lies with the wind the turn-table will also turn, and as the wind increases it will continue to turn off until the edge of the wheel is to the wind. As the wind'lulls the weight H. will right the mill before the wind.
In case of a whirlwind, the mill will revolve on the thimble or tubular bearing B without disturbing the pumping parts, because the main pump-rod is to beswiveled on the lower end of the pitman-rod, as above stated.
When the mill is to be stopped from pumping the weight H is transferred from the cord at to a cord or chain, d, which is attached to the end of an arm, L, attached to the turntable, at right angles to the wind-wheel shaft. The cord or chain d passes from said arm over a pulley, 03, mounted in a post, h, which is swiveled in an arm l, attached to the vane G on the opposite side from where the arm I is located. The weight will then turn the vane so as to throw the wheel entirely out of the wind.
The cords or chains d d should belong enough so that the weight can be transferred from the ground at the foot of the tower.
I do not claim, broadly, the idea of turning the regulating-vane by a backward movement of the wind-wheel and shaft, as I am aware that such has been done before.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. In a windmill where the vane is operated by the thrust of the wheel, the combination, with the wheel and its shaft, of the lever K, elbow-lever J, pivoted casting F, with pin a, vane G, arm I, attached to the casting F and provided with the swiveled post h, carrying In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th (lay 0t 10 November, 1879.
